Chapter 2: Home Sweet Home

It took them a few days of non-stop work, and a dash or two of magic, but soon that large expanse of land was a suitable living space. And just in time for night to fall across the discordant town of Aurora Skies.

"It's certainly no palace, but I think we're ready to go, Kid," Luther said, standing back to admire their handiwork.

"It's the most beautiful thing I've ever seen," Oswin breathed.

Not as if she had seen very much, Luther thought, and then with a grin, decided to test a theory.

"Only the best for our stunning empress," he drawled as the girl blushed. Hypothesis supported.

"Come on, then. Let's go see inside." He turned and headed toward the steps. Oswin bolted by him and burst through the front door.

"It's incredible!"

"It's kind of a dump," Luther appraised.

"No, it is not! It's amazing. We have a kitchen, and a bathroom, and a bedroom."

"There's hardly any furniture in here."

"But there will be. Soon, too. There's a job in the paper with the police. I'd be great at catching criminals!"

"You literally know nothing about any of that. As in, you could not possibly know any less about the subject."

"I read Crime and Punishment. What else is there?"

"Sure, then. Knock yourself out."

"You're so supportive!" She said naively, hugging him around the waist before bounding off to explore the 9x5 rectangle that was their home.

"Another topic you should brush up on: sarcasm."

"I'll see if I can buy a book on it," she called from the bathroom.

"Impossible girl," he muttered as he walked back outside. Perhaps there was a job offering for him as well.

He wouldn't be fetching coffee more than a day. No one underestimated a Knight. At least not for very long.

Nice character integrity!!  Having lived in a hidden room as a captive for years, this tiny house would, indeed, seem to be quite the immaculate palace!

Chapter 3: New Friends

Her first night in their new home, in a real bed, Oswin slept like a rock.

Never before had a sleep been so restful, had a bed been so soft. She felt it swallow her, cradling her in years of happiness she had been deprived.

"All right, Oz," Luther said early that next morning. "Time to show me where you're at."

"I have to get up?" She whined from under her blankets.

"Yes. This is not a joke, kid. Get up. Go get ready."

She dragged herself unhappily out of bed and got dressed for the day. "All right, all right. What first?"

"Show me what you can do with this apple."

"Hey! It turned into a seed!" She gasped.

"Not bad. It's a rare seed. This might come in handy. I'll hold on to it for you."

"Thanks, Luther."

"Mmhmm. Now practice some more before you have to get to your job you're completely unqualified for."

"Oh, hush. They'll love me."

"Yes. All companies love huge liabilities."
----------------------------------------------------------

"How do I look, Luth?" She asked him, showing off her work attire.

"You're the most beautiful underqualified officer of the law I've ever seen," he said kindly.

"Aww, thanks! But, I'm not actually a police officer, you know."

"Thank Watcher."

"Shh. My ride is here. Have a good day!"

"Mmm," he said, watching her go.

On her way home from work that evening, Oswin stopped at the library to pick up a book on her history. It would probably be smart to know who she was. Or at least, who everyone thought she was.

The Daye family has remained in power for over two centuries. The loss of Oswin Daye, the only daughter of Thore Daye, has effectively severed the royal line of the most loved family in the history of this great Empire. However, there is rumor that the emperor's sister still lives, leaving hope that a Daye may once again rise to power to mend the shards of the city-states that Thore's death left.

"That's so nice! I hope they feel the same when I show up again. Oh!" She gasped as her phone rang in her pocket. "Oh, how does this thing work?" She muttered, fumbling with the thing. "Luther said to... right. Hello?"

"Oswin? H-hey! This is Johan."

"..."

"Um, from work."

"Oh, right! Hello."

"Hey. I was hoping I could... maybe meet you for drinks and we could talk about your first day at the office?"

"Oh, that's so sweet of you! Sure."

"Great! I'll... I'll see you at Varg's, okay?"

"See you there."

Johan greeted Oswin with a muted kind of childish glee. "Hey, Oswin."

"Hello. It was so kind of you to invite me out! I'm... new here, so I don't know many people."

"Of course. I've lived here my whole life, so I could deinfitely show you around."

"I might take you up on that," she said brightly, her easily impressed nature getting the better of her.

But Oswin wasn't the only one making new friends.

"Why, hello there," Luther said, stepping into the bar. "Have you checked the smoke alarms in here because..." The woman turned around to greet him.

"Woof." He spotted a new target behind the bar and quickly crossed the room.  He hopped up onto the counter and swung his legs to the other side.

Much better. "Why, hello there. Have you checked the smoke alarms in here? Because you are on fire."

Thanks, Pip! I'm trying to maintain her innocence this early on. I wish there was a trait like naive or naturally innocent or something. Childish seemed not quite right. I went with Easily Impressed, which seems like totally her style, haha.

Wait, did Knight just make that girl magically attractive?  If so, Breagadoir must learn that spell :=)  Joking aside, nice update.  It's fun to see young Miss Daye continue to have a sweet naivety about her, but I must say, I'm worried about the trouble that it may bring.

Hahha, no, he didn't, but what a spell that would be! He found a new girl. I think the bartenders in that bar were wearing the same outfit. I fixed a few words to make it a bit more clear.

Oswin appreciates your concern for her. She says not to worry, as is her nature.  ::)

Chapter 4: This is Not a Fairy Tale

"Having any luck finding a match?" Luther asked after he returned home from work one night.

"Well, this guy from work, Johan, has seemed kind of interested. But I don't know. And this bartender chatted me up on my way home from Johan's house."

"But it all feels strange to me. Like I'm not following my heart."

"Oh, Watcher. How many fairy tales did you wind up reading in that place? This is real life, Oz. This isn't fun, this isn't romantic. This is a girl having a pretty screwed up past and martyring herself to fix it for everyone else. It's sad and it's hard, and I'm sorry. But just pick one of those guys and learn to like him, all right?"

"Geez. You should work for a suicide hotline," she muttered, picking up a book and climbing into bed.

"Good night, Luther," she said, her voice more stern than he had ever heard it.

"Yeah," he said, scratching his brow and picking up a book himself. "Good night."

Although he had been magically inclined for most of his life, Luther had never much dabbled in the arts of Alchemy. Here, with very little scheduled, Luther found himself more and more curious of the powers that could come from outside himself and how he could hone them. He didn't imagine it would take a brilliant man like him very long.
---------------------------------------------------------------------

The next day, the two woke to the sound of thick raindrops tapping on the roof. Oswin gasped, sitting bolt upright in bed. "Luther! Wake up! It's raining!"

Luther muttered something and pulled the blankets back up over his head.

"No, Luth! Come on!" She dressed in a hurry and flew out the front door. "It's just as beautiful as I ever imagined!"

"What is going on?" Luther asked from the doorway only a few minutes later.

"I've never seen rain before!" She gasped as she stomped in the puddles beneath her feet. "I've only ever read about it. It's so amazing!"

"You are an odd duck, kid," he muttered as he watched cross-armed from the door. That was when something else entirely caught his eye. "Mm, you enjoy that. I'll just be right over... here." He walked casually over to the lawn of his neighbors who were standing under their awning and chatting.

"Pleasure to meet you, kid," Luther said, greeting the teenage daughter of Oswin's potential suiter. (She would be confused to learn that he was married, as he had told her he was single.) "We just moved in a few days ago. I'd be great to get a tour."

"I'll see you later, Luther," Oswin called from across the lawns. "My partner just called and he wants to show me the community gardens. He says I'll like them in the rain."

"Have fun," he said dismissively as he listened seemingly intently to the young girl before him.

And Oswin's partner was right. The park was beautiful. It was embarrassing, she though, how much of the world she had only ever read about. Flowers, for example, were much more beautiful than words could ever describe. The feel of the rain hitting her skin. Why would anyone use an umbrella instead of soaking in that tingling, blissful sensation.

Chin Han was of the same mind. He loved her sweet appreciation of the nature around them, and he even forwent the umbrella he was carrying when she asked him to stand with her in the rain. He was incredibly warm and almost as charming as Luther. He made her smile.

"This has been so great, Chin."

"You've definitely made it an adventure," he said with a laugh. "I'd love to see you again. Outside of work, that is."

"Yeah. You can count on it," she said and kissed his cheek before heading home. The rain got her much wetter than she had anticipated.

"My dear, I've missed you," Luther drawled to the slim blonde thing from a few nights before, blowing her a kiss upon entering.

"A home visit? Luther, you shouldn't have," she said with a sharp little smile before she fit herself snugly in his arms.

"The night is still young, Mrs. Elliot."

Mrs Elliot?  Luther, you naughty young man!!
Loving how worldly-wise Luther is as opposed to Oz' naïve and child-like perspective.  Fantastic juxtaposition of character-types!

I think you named him wrong   ;)  It should have been Casanova.
He is definitely a ladies man.  I am enjoying the continuing saga of the Knight and Daye story.

Thanks, Janna! He's certainly a piece of work. I'll be trying to get something done, and when I turn around, he's flirting with whatever female is in range.

Chapter 5: The Love Dilemma

Oswin found that she was enjoying her time with her work partner, Chin, more and more. He was a flirty gentleman, which meant she was both treated extremely well and given an incredible amount of positive attention. She returned home from work with a much better mood than she had left with. There was just one thing stopping her from making that next jump.

"So I'm... supposed to just ask him to marry me?" She asked Luther one night after dinner.

"Yes, and then have an heir. And increase your notoriety in the town. Everyone needs to know your back, or what use is any of this?" He responded, picking apple skin from his teeth.

"It's such a rush of a life! What if we're not the best for each other? What if he's not my true love?"

Luther rolled his eyes. "No such thing, kid. Suck it up and get married. You like him well enough. You're always talking about him."

"I guess," she said, standing up to get ready for bed. "I just feel like I'm supposed to be with someone else?"

"Who?" He asked boredly.

"I don't know," she replied. But it seemed, perhaps, that she did.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The next day, Chin asked Oswin to meet him for a surprise he had planned for her.

"What is it, Chin! I'm absolutely terrible with surprises."

He laughed and grinned. "Give me a second. Close your eyes."

Her body trembled with excitement and she placed her hands over her eyes to keep herself from peeking.

He led her into the building and tapped her shoulder. "Okay, you can open them. I've rented this building out for the night, so it's just for us. Well, just for you."

She clapped her hands together, words failing her, but only for a moment. "The Library!"

He laughed and nodded. "Yes. I know how much you love being here, so I thought we could have a date here."

"That's so thoughtful! It's the best date I've ever been on!" One of the only, but, hey. Make the guy feel special.

But Oswin wasn't the only one having an enjoyable night.

Remember Mrs. Elliot?

Well, she'd made a housecall of her own.

"You're really a great guy, Chin," Oswin said after they'd shared a picnic on the floor of the History Section. "No one has ever done something like this for me. It makes me feel like people should."

"Of course they should! You're an amazing girl. And not just because of your lineage either. I almost can't believe that's true."

"I know it's complicated. And strange."

"Worth it, Oz," he said.

With a smile of sudden confidence, Oswin leaned in for a sweet and spontaneous kiss.

It was not long after that she and Chin headed their separate ways, happy with the events of the night. But although, for Oswin, this was her very first kiss, it was not the only one she would have that night.
