The Cortneys, Chapter the Fourth

Dear Deannin and Aubria,

I assume you’ve heard that Dragon Valley is closed to us until further notice? As Hamish pointed out, that means the most eligible spouses for our heirs will have to come from our own non-heir children.

Going by zodiac sign alone, the most eligible spouse for our little heir Elanor (not so little any more, now that she’s a teen) would be Finglas, but we certainly wouldn’t rule out Beren or Twig. Anyway, here she is, having her birthday:

She really is quite a lovely girl – excitable, friendly, a bookworm, and very proper.

Although she still retains some baby fat, Elanor is working on that. She plans to have a lifetime wish of Perfect Body, Perfect Mind.

She and Colin both love peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, which is great because that’s still all we can fix in our kitchen.

Speaking of Colin, he’d make a wonderful spouse for either Arwen or Thistle. He’s a young man now and quite handsome in his new clothing (pay no attention to the expression on his face – that comes from the dirty dishes on the counter behind him).

Colin’s lifetime wish is The Tinkerer, and he’s already more than halfway there with 6 points in logic and 5 in handiness. Besides being an excellent plumber (once something’s been fixed by him, it won’t ever break again), he’s a real artist when it comes to making snowmen. Not only can he do a tragic clown,

Colin can also crank out an evil one. He loves the cold, so he’s quite happy staying outside for long periods of time.

Just yesterday, he graduated as valedictorian and was named Most Likely to Take Over the World. He’s started a job at the Landgraab Science Center, working with me (and some more experienced scientists) on ways to clean up this mess we’re in.

I realize that both Arwen and Thistle are still quite young, but they’ll grow up fast. Let me know what you think. (Let me just mention that Colin is also a genius and a heavy sleeper – which is a very useful trait when there’s a house full of nooboos.)

As for me and Kimberley, we keep plugging along. She had a birthday at the same time as Colin.

She’s going through a midlife crisis, poor thing, but she’s more than halfway to achieving her lifetime wish of becoming an International Super Spy. I don’t know what will be “international” about her job when she can’t travel, but I’m sure she’ll figure something out. Hope that you and your families are doing well, and that you’re not having the same terrible weather we are. Sincerely, Brendon Cortney

Thanks, both of you! Magz, they're not allowed birthday cakes yet, so they wait till everyone is in bed before aging up, lol.

The McCarleve-Pinkertons, Chapter the Fourth

Dear Moira, Fiona, and Elwing,

Hello, ladies! My mom tells me that I’m expected to marry one of you. She says I should tell you all about myself, so that you can decide which one of you should marry me. First of all, I’m artistic and making progress as a painter.

I’m not a neat freak, but I am disciplined, so I like to keep the area around our house looking clean.

This is what our house looks like. It’s probably very similar to yours, except that it’s in Moonlight Falls. I can’t tell you much about Moonlight Falls because I’m not allowed to go anywhere except school.

I don’t want you to think I’m a total dork, so I’ll let you know that I’m pretty good at pranking, probably because I’m a technophobe.

And I’ve been told that I’m a great kisser.

You probably want to know a little about the rest of the family. Mom’s great, she makes wizard peanut butter sandwiches, and she knows how to fix things. It would probably be good if whoever decided to marry me was good at repairing things and cooking, too.

Dad was a doctor before his mind started to deteriorate. These days he spends a lot of time practicing magic (he’s also a witch).

It’s really sad that he doesn’t remember to come in out of the rain anymore. Talking to a zombie vampire isn’t a good idea either.

Of course, Dad will talk to just about anyone. That’s my friend Zack Durwood he’s chatting with here.

The last member of the family is my sister Marigold. She’s a genius and artistic and she loves hot weather. Don’t let the cheekbones fool you – deep down inside, she’s a rebel.

My zodiac sign is Libra, if that helps you ladies with your decision. I’m sure I’ll be happy with whichever one of you joins the family. And I’m pretty sure you’ll be happy, too (I’m a great kisser, remember?) Cheers, Elrond McCarleve-Pinkerton

Ha! That reminds me of the old joke "Wanted: wife with bass boat.  Please send pictures of the boat."

Marian, I am in awe that not only are you playing this in all these towns, you're keeping track of who's eligible for whom.  I love this story.

The Poolakis, Chapter the Fourth

Her first thought, when Deannin read the letter from Brendon, was that Arwen was just a baby. Well, not literally a baby, but a child, and certainly not ready to marry.

She was rather annoyed with Brendon for bringing up the subject. “We already have almost a full house,” she muttered to herself. “And even though Ciro has become an elder, it will be a long time before he dies.”

She was distracted from her thoughts by some giggling in the corner.

   “Ladies!” laughed Moira.

   “Great kisser!” gasped Fiona.

“Hopes we can cook and do repairs!” they giggled together.

Deannin confiscated Elrond’s letter and read it. “Well, it’s not the most elegant proposal I’ve ever heard of, but for a teen-aged boy who’s never met you, it’s not so bad. I’ll leave it to the two of you to figure out which one should marry him.”

   “Mom?” said Fiona.

“Well, someone from this family has to, and I hope you don’t think it should be Elwing. She’s just a baby.”

“But – “ Moira began to object.

“I have to leave for work,” said Deannin. “Now, relax. You don’t have to decide tonight.”

After Deannin left, Fiona started thinking. She was a loner, and there were times when her family drove her crazy. Every afternoon, Arwen and Elwing declared themselves queen of the world, and ruled their kingdom in piping shrill voices.

And you could barely move across the room.

And she didn’t want to get started on the subject of the bathroom. One sister versus three sisters and a brother? It was a no-brainer.

Because she was a genius, Fiona had perfect recall of Elrond’s letter when she responded.

Dear Elrond,

I know what you mean about your father. My dad’s the greatest, but ever since he got old, he’s spent all his time watching the chipmunk in back. And he doesn’t seem to mind whether it’s cold or he’s still in his pajamas.

Anyway, this is what I look like. I’ve already decided that my lifetime wish is to become a—

“What are you doing?” Moira demanded.

   “Nothing,” said Fiona. “My homework.”

“You always get your homework done as soon as we come home. You were writing to that boy, weren’t you?”

“No,” said Fiona. “I had this problem I couldn’t figure out right away, so I had to let it sit a while.”

It was Moira’s turn to do some thinking. She wasn’t all that interested in Elrond, but she didn’t want to see Fiona snatch him up. If Fiona was writing to him, then she would have to write, too. Now, what was his name? It didn’t matter.

Hey, there, she wrote. My name is Moira, and everyone says I’m the prettiest in the family. I’m also a witch. I bet we could have a lot of fun together. Here’s my picture.

And that, thought Moira, should take care of that.

When Deannin returned home that evening, she discovered that Beren had become a teenager.

It was time for her to do some match-making, too.

Dear Aubria,

I think you received the same letter from Brendon that I did. I’ve been thinking that probably the best arrangement would be for his Colin to marry our Arwen, and our Beren to marry your Thistle. And then one of your sons would marry Elanor to round things out. Let me know what you think. Love, Deannin.

The Dorainars, Chapter the Fourth

Aubria read the letters from Brendon and Deannin with growing frustration. It was much too soon to arrange marriages for everyone, but especially for Thistle, who really was just a baby. She wasn’t even walking yet.

She didn’t know why everyone was in such a hurry. Surely it would be better to take time for a little fun. Branch agreed with her. He would much rather tickle Thistle than go to work at a job he hated.

Politics didn’t interest him at all, but that was where the Central Committee had sent him.

Unfortunately, the next morning, Aubria read some very disturbing news in the paper.

METEOR STRIKES TOXIC WASTE SITE

As if residents of Simworld haven’t suffered enough, scientists predict that the fallout from this strike will shorten the lifespan of every living Sim. (Continued on page A7).

Almost on cue, Twig tumbled out of bed and aged up to a teenager.

“I’m not ready for this,” Aubria moaned. “I haven’t even completed my lifetime wish yet.”

“Mom!” Finglas called. “The toilet’s stopped up again!”

And the sink wasn’t working either. “You’d think that a new town like Starlight Shores would have halfway decent plumbing,” Aubria muttered.

When she emerged from the bathroom, Aubria discovered that Twig was teaching Thistle how to walk.

“That’s one blessing,” she said. “Thank you, Twig.”

“No problem,” he said. “I plan to help Dad with the gardening, too. You know, in case he doesn’t feel like it after he gets old.”

It wasn’t fair, Aubria thought. Both her boys should be able to get married, and Twig was really quite handsome. But Deannin was the logical one, and the pairings she’d arranged really did make sense.

A few days later, Thistle was ready to start school.

She wasn’t quite as pretty as Aubria had hoped, but perhaps she would grow into her features.

The next birthday was Branch’s. “No more office!” he explained. “No more envelopes to stuff! No more paper cuts!”

No more income, thought Aubria. Well, perhaps she would get a job as soon as she mastered Alchemy. She was halfway to level 10 – surely, she would reach the end of the book before she became an elder.

Note to readers: I moved the lifespan to Medium, partly to get used to it before tackling the new dynasty, but also to make this project go a little faster.

The Jungbloddins – Chapter the Fifth

Hello, all!

Gilgad here. Dad’s an elder now, so writing is difficult for him.

He and Mom are still very much in love, however, which gives me some hope for our future.

And check Mom out! She’s looking pretty good for someone who is expecting the Grim Reaper any day now.

She got her lifetime wish when Clover joined the household, bringing money with her, so we’re able to have electrical appliances again. We haven’t added a dishwasher yet – they’re too noisy.

Anyway, we have a new heir – Gwyneth Jungbloddin. Mom was a little distressed by the birth, but Clover told her to just go and clean the bathroom.

Gwyneth has the Jungbloddin green skin. She's a light sleeper and hydrophobic, like Dad.

She also has our blond hair and pointy ears.

So, I was thinking – if no one has definitely arranged the marriages yet, I’d rather she had an older husband (as long as he wasn’t an elder) than have to wait for someone of her generation to grow up. She's a Libra, which would make her compatible with Beren. Let me know what you think. Gilgad.

Thanks, kase! I used to play with multiple families in Sims 2, and enjoyed marrying the children of one set to the children of another. I decided to try something similar here.

The Poolakis – Chapter the Fifth

Deannin read over the letter from Sanchera with some trepidation.

Dear Deannin,

I do appreciate the prompt replies from Fiona and Moira. Both of them are beautiful girls, and Fiona is obviously quite intelligent. I think she would make a wonderful daughter-in-law, but Elrond tells me that he has quite fallen in love with Moira. We look forward to welcoming her into our house. Sincerely, Sanchera

P.S. I’ve very envious that you were able to get a job in music.

She hadn’t realized that both Fiona and Moira had written to Elrond. She just hoped Fiona wouldn’t take it too hard.

Deannin was distracted by loud cheering – Elwing was having her birthday.

She added the trait of nurturing. Deannin was also sure that she was quite pretty, but it was hard to tell with all that hair.

   Arwen had her birthday next.

She looked like Ciro, Deannin thought. And speaking of Ciro, he was ecstatic – his fifth child had become a teen: he had achieved his lifetime wish.

It made a big difference to all of them. From now on, they could go other places – during daylight hours, of course. They could take courses in various skills; they could go to the library and read skill books. They could take opportunities at places other than work. And Fiona could invite over her next ranked chess opponent. The first one who came was Tay Bayless.

He was soon followed by Molly Coddle. Deannin couldn’t help noticing that the other residents of Twinbrook were dressed as unsuitably for cold weather as her children. Molly arrived in a swimsuit and Tay in a kilt and sandals.

The next day Fiona and Moira had their birthdays. Fiona was upstairs, practicing chess moves.

Moira was downstairs, taking a nap.

Deannin showed her the contents of the letter. “You’ll have to move out and travel by yourself to Moonlight Falls, where they have werewolves and vampires. Are you sure you want to do this?”

Moira grinned. “I’m a daredevil now. Bring it on!” she said. And she left immediately.

Fiona took the news better than Deannin had feared. “I don’t really like children much,” she said. “It will be a relief not to have any. But I’ll tell you Mom – there are werewolves here in Twinbrook, too. I’m playing chess with one after graduation.”

They all went to the ceremony. Fiona graduated with highest honor and was named most likely to never leave the house.

Afterwards, she and Elwing made angels in the snow.

The Dorainars, Chapter the Fifth

Dear Mom, Dad, and Elanor,

As soon as I arrived at my new home, I was put to work.  Aubria wanted the shower to be self-cleaning, and of course I was happy to oblige.

My next task was to tutor Thistle. What with weekends, snow days, and holidays, she was very much behind in her schoolwork.

After our tutoring session, she challenged me to a snowball fight. We’re friends now.

Branch and I are getting along okay. He does pretty well for someone suffering the elder sickness. He still remembers how to water the plants, but weeding is beyond him.

He loves being outdoors, making snow angels…

…and a Grim Reaper snowman.

He even sleeps in the igloo he built.

Elanor probably wants to know what her future husband looks like, so this is Finglas.

He can make alien snowmen, which is pretty cool.

We’ve had quite a few happy events since I arrived. The first was that Aubria finished her study of Alchemy and finally completed her lifetime wish to become a Renaissance Sim.

(An aside here – she has really beautiful eyes, and it’s a shame that none of the children have inherited them. But maybe there’s hope for a grandchild.)

Next was Thistle’s birthday. She was really looking forward to becoming a teen.

But the aging-up fairy has not been kind to her. As soon as she showed up at school the next day, she was given the nickname The Green Hippo. Since she’s shy (also eccentric, clumsy, and a loner), I may be doing more tutoring. Teenagers can be so cruel, and Thistle really doesn’t deserve to be teased.

Then Twig had his birthday (which I didn’t get a photo of) and graduated from high school. We all had to go to his graduation, which was a boon for me and Branch. Because of the restrictions, we’re not allowed to leave the house, so both of us have been going stir-crazy. Twig was named Most Likely to Take Over the World.

He also graduated with highest honor. He moved out as soon as graduation was over, and is on his way to the Poolakis.

Our final happy event was that Branch completed his lifetime wish of a perfect garden. I can go to the library now and read all those back issues of Popular Simchanics to finish my handiness requirements.

We’ve got more birthdays coming up (mine, Aubria’s and Finglas’s), but I’ll write about those later. Love to all, Colin
