A good challenge for a beginner?
« on: June 07, 2013, 09:53:44 PM »
I wasn't sure where this belonged, and I didn't really think it went in the challenges forum simply because the other topics were all actual challenges, not discussions about them.

Anyway, while I am a fairly seasoned simmer, I've never really done a challenge beyond one generation, which brings me to my question:

What are some good challenges or legacies for a beginner to the concept? Whenever I look at some of the rules for things like the immortal dynasty, it just seems so daunting!

I highly recommend the Immortal Dynasty. Yes, it does seem daunting, but you will get the hang of it quickly. :) I find it really fun, it's the only game I play at the moment.

Any good tips? I always start and wind up seriously going off target about the time the first heir hits school age.

Or someone dies. Three times I've had the heir or first gen immortal die from some freak accident before I can hit immortal status.

Hi and welcome to the forum.   There is an entire thread of tips and hints for people doing the dynasties on the story board.   Here is a link for you.

If you ever have any questions,  don't hesitate to ask on the dynasty thread or if you would be more comfortable, you can always PM me and the rest of the team in private.  I try to answer my PMs on a regular basis.

I've done the immortal dynasty 10 times or so and some of them are still active and one of them is in the HOF.   I've done the DecaDynasty about 6 times and the life states one I have three active files at this exact moment.  I love our dynasties and each one is unique and fun in it's own way.

I was very much like you, a serial restarter who sometimes got as far as grandchildren.

The first generational challenge I tried was a Wishacy, basically you do as your sim wishes as much as possible and big events like romance or babies can only happen if they wish for it, I had great fun with this and did stuff I would never normally do just because they wished for it, like the founder having two romantic interests, marrying one of them, then trying for baby with both men, I had no clue who the dad was till the affair showed up at the hospital, talk about drama  :o He even came home with them in the taxi, needless to say that ended in divorce.

For me it was good starter to trying the dynasty challenges here which before I found a little daunting but it's true once you get going it seems far less complicated, I'm currently five generations into my umpteenth immortal attempt and hoping to finish it this time.

I know you are more looking at the dynasties, but you could also try a shorter project story. They are just as well written and are great for beginners. You can find them Here.

Yes, the Projects are good, too.  It doesn't have to be a story, though.  Stories aren't required for any of the challenges, only if you wish to write one.  I also recommend the Immortal Dynasty Challenge if it's a generational challenge you want.  I've only played one, but I got all the way through it on my first try and it's in the Hall of Fame.  :)

Oh, I can't wait to try a Wishacy out! I've got all of tomorrow to sit down and set one up, and I'm looking forward to it. Who knows, maybe I'll buckle down and pump out a story with it. :)

And I'm definitely going to check out these shorter projects, these are all getting bookmarked.

If you're looking for a shorter challenge the Asylum challenge can be a fun one.  The Big Brother challenge is also a lot of fun.  There's also a ton of quick, fun, interesting challenges in the challenge graveyard

One of my favourite non-dynasty multi-generational games so far is the I'm Surrounded By Idiots challenge.  There's something so fun about having a household of mystery sims (I closed my eyes when choosing any kid's traits) that your one insane sim has to manage, keep safe, and keep happy.  It's the first time I ever paid attention to the speech bubbles during the 'Get to Know' interactions!

There are also plenty of challenges from previous tournaments to consider.  Some are really fun.  You can find them here.
