Yeah, unfortunately it won't help distinguish flamefruit bushes (although at a certain point, you can tell by the shape, but life/death plants nearly look a like in that category) or the difference between life/death plants, but apparently if the plant is constantly withering or often need in water; that's a sign it's a life fruit plant.

But really, just start ASAP in the gathering of seeds. The graveyard area is the best for Sunset Valley, imo (you can also get a deathflower there, but...really, if you collect enough seeds and have the right traits, you won't need that one so I'd save it for back up). But idk if you are at that neighborhood.

Anyway, good luck! Gardening takes a little preparation/planning, but it's really easy once you are familiar with the tips and tricks.

Yes I am playing there and I didn't plan well at all last time. I think I will have my founder do gardening and with these tips I should do well. I have been delaying restarting because of this. But no question now. I and starting :)

Also, there are a few wild gardens around the neighborhood. At the science center in Sunset Valley, you can harvest from their plants (and also take a class in gardening there as well). I believe there are also a few wild plants at the Crystal Springs area and I ~think~ the Langerak house? If not, one of the households in that area, I think. You can harvest quick produce easily, and I believe sell it for your own, if you want. But it can get you started without having to purchase anything at the grocery store.

When you collect the special seeds, they actually have different prices if you go to sell them. The money trees and death flower plants are both worth 0, and then it's just the life fruit and flame fruit. They do have different values but its been so long that I can't remember what they are.
From the moment I fell down that rabbit hole I've been told what I must do and who I must be. I've been shrunk, stretched, scratched and stuffed into a teapot. I've been accused of being Alice, and of not being Alice, but this is my dream. I'll decide where it goes from here.

Blue Rose is right - there's a lot of things to harvest around Sunset Valley.  I think a flame fruit grows in the front yard of Boyd and Susan Wainwright.  The only base game plants that I'm pretty sure aren't already available are life fruit and money trees (I didn't know until today there was a deathflower hiding in the graveyard!).

Just remember if you're growing deathflowers or life fruit and your gardener isn't yet immortal or is a helper to take the produce out of their inventory ASAP.  Failing a dynasty because the gardener snacked on a life fruit would be tragic.

If you happen to have the Stones Throw Greenhouse, the gardening station makes things massively easier
1)It places a seed spawner on your lot.
2)It can be used to identify the seeds you find.
3)The Composter function saves tons of time and resources by fertilizing the whole garden with just 3 items. Add in the Sun Flower and even those 3 become free...

If your sim makes it far enough to gardening (maxed skill and all the way to completing opportunity to gaining omniplant seeds), you can "feed" the omniplant any fruit that normally grows on a tree to produce these fruits inside while not using any cheats whatsoever, though I believe you need supernaturals EP to get the item needed to grow plants inside.

I personally love the Humble Market Stand (premium content) from the Al Fresco Street Market location (store item).

These have up to 10 of a number of varieties of fruits and vegetables including, on occasion, life fruits. (There are also higher level skill books for cooking and gardening) I go to the Al Fresco location and purchase the ten life fruits and plant them at home. This, together with the previously mentioned premium content from the stone throws greenhouse location (both the growing station and the dancing flowers that produce the sunlight) are key for my non immortals doing gardening in the early stages. Additionally, the humble market stand has the grapes and other fruits available in the holiday locations and university. Using this humble market stand, one of my founders was able to complete the plants photography collection in his Riverview home (Bunnyman, I salute you). The only plants I haven't encountered at the humble market stand are death bushes, money trees and forbidden fruits.

My usual gardening set up is a room within my house with one grow station, four of the dancing flowers and one + humble market stands. I also set move objects to on so plants can be planted in the floor inside. I generally go for more than one of the humble market stands, as each one seems to have different fruits/vegetables available for purchase. (So greater chance of getting the fruit/vegetable/herb wanted. Also, my sims will sometimes randomly choose to tend the humble market stand, which is potentially a great way to keep 'bored' immortals 'busy'. The four dancing flowers means that I have a constant supply of the sunlight fertilizer at hand. Oh, I also have an alchemy cabinet for plants and fish and everything else.
