My sim was away at University and when she came back I couldn't see her or her little brothers picture and I can't click on them to see their needs. I can see their actual body but when I hover over it with my mouse it's gray and doesn't give me any option. I already tried "resetsim" and it didn't do anything. Can someone PLEASE help! 
Hey Ashleyy110, I would take Moonsareblue's advice. I found this solution elsewhere, and it worked! I was literally JUMPING for joy!
Make sure that you click on the house in "Edit Town," then save a copy of the family alone. Then click on the house again to evict the family from the house.
Once the family icon is on your screen, delete them!! Then go back to your saved copy of the family (which should be with all the other families waiting for a home) and place them back into the house.
This unfortunately takes away most relationships (my sim doesn't even recognize her own family that lives in a separate house right now), BUT your sims are SAVED!!! You can rebuild lost relationships!!
