Hmm, the plot definitely thickens...

The Thickening . . .

I kinda feel like I know where this Grace and Blake relationship is headed and if my  hunch is correct it's going to lead to something very adorable. I also feel like this has something to do with Mist too but that part i'm only half sure about.

Yes, it will be extremely adorable!

Thank God Cyllia is an inventor. I almost didn't know who to root for. Although I still won't be upset if Kylara wins heirship. Now for my newly (not actually) trademarked action: *waves Cyllia pennant flag*. Take that, Wiry!

You like inventors? I like them, too, but I like doctors more! You and your flags . . .

Aww poor Kylara!!I am glad the girls told her! I really like all the girls and would be happy to see anyone win. My favorite is probably Aliya.

I wonder who everyone is going to vote for--it seems to be a three-way tie right now, so the results will be interesting.

"Do you know how hard it is to not ask him about it? Or give Mum a hint? Or--"

"I want to ask my mom about it, too," Aliya interrupted. "I'd like to ask her why she's sleeping with a married man, not to mention the married man is married to her mother, but they were together even when they were married to different people. She just didn't luck out in the end."

"It's funny," Cyllia chuckled, "my parents are the least messed-up! There has to be a joke in there somewhere. Aliya?"

"Yes, yes, you're so lucky," Kylara grumbled. "Meanwhile, I don't know what to talk about with my dad! Every time I see him, there are these images--"

"Ergh." Aliya shuddered. "Now I'm going to have images, too! My mom, your dad--just talk about books. Books are excellent topics of conversation."

"Now I am also going to have images, so I'll be in my room practicing folding napkins. And burning metal. Burning metal is good."

"Hi, Dad," Cyllia greeted her dad with a hug. "For the record, I do not have images of you and mom together, and I don't have images of other people, either. Horrible, nightmarish images. Can I borrow a gas-mask?"

  "How was your day, Ky?"

"Oh, you know, good . . . say, have you read that new Harry Potter book? Number eight?"

"There's isn't an eighth Harry Potter book."

"Really? I'll go look that up right now."

She ended up watching TV with Jason, while Blake tutored Cyllia. Cyllia had been skipping classes because she was very easily bored, and sleeping through the few she did attend, so she was in desperate need of help. Of course, Cyllia herself didn't care about that--she was going to be an inventor, anyway, so school wasn't important. She was only taking advantage of the opportunity so she could listen to Kylara trying to make conversation with Blake.

"So, we're reading this lovely book in English," Kylara announced to the room at large. "It's about a man who cheats on his wife with his stepdaughter. Do you think people have affairs in real life, Dad? What about you, Jason? What do you think about cheating on one's partner with one of her close relatives?"

Jason winced as Treasure entered the room, and placed an arm over her shoulders. Kylara continued to ramble uninterrupted. "I mean, really, why would anyone do anything like that? How painful would it be to discover that?"

Grace came home from work to find the entire family in the living room with their assorted activities, Kylara ranting, Treasure's face darkening with every word that came out of her mouth, Jason doing his best to calm her.

"Well, Dad? You never answered the question!"

"Sorry, Ky, I'm a little busy right now--"

What does she know? "Kylara, this is sort of a sore subject for everyone here." She glanced at Jason and Treasure, who were busy distracting themselves.

"Well, who is it a sore subject for, Grace? Is it a sore subject for you? Or, maybe, Dad?"

Both Cyllia and Aliya turned to look at their friend, then sighed. Some people just didn't know how to be subtle.

"If you must know, Kylara, Treasure and Jason were dating when we were teenagers, and then he cheated on her with me. He and I got married, Treasure and Blake married, then Jason cheated on me with Treasure. Blake cheated on Treasure with both me and my mother, and, as it turns out, either man could have had three children, but instead Jason fathered my child and Treasure's, and Blake had a kid with Mist, otherwise known as you. Does that clear everything up?"

"Erm . . ." she faltered, in a state of shock. "Yeah. Okay. Thanks."

"We were always meant to be together," Treasure whispered to her husband.

"Of course," Jason answered with a smile.

That's when Kylara realized--it must be Jason, not Blake! Aliya must have seen Grace with someone who she mistook for Kylara's dad. Clearly, Jason was the big cheater of the family, so it made sense that he would be resuming his life of evil!

She lingered in the living room as everyone else gradually left for bed, then hid in the kitchen. She saw her father standing in the doorway of the bedroom, scanning the hall before closing the door.

Kylara silently opened and closed the door to the outside, and crept down the stairs. There were windows in Blake's room, so she would be able to see if Grace was in there, too! Maybe Blake was even helping Grace and Jason meet. There were a thousand explanations that were all far more plausible than what Aliya and Cyllia thought.

Okay, she was in there talking to someone who was wearing the same shirt as Kylara's dad. That didn't mean anything.

Then, through the window, she saw something that even her large, intelligent brain could not twist into something positive.

Fighting the urge to smash on the window and yell at her dad, Kylara turned and walked away--up the steps, into the house, and across the hall to her room.

"I thought I saw something outside."

"Don't be so paranoid." Grace rolled her eyes. "We're being careful, not like when we were both married, and we didn't even get caught back then."

Nine minutes later, Grace hurried down the hall, not even bothering to get dressed. Behind her, Blake rolled over in bed, pretending to be asleep. Yes, they were being very careful this time, even if it meant cutting certain things short.

The next morning, Aliya cornered her mom in the kitchen while everyone else was still asleep. "Mom," she said bluntly, "are you and Blake having an affair?"

Grace gasped, startled, but regained her composure quickly. "No, Aliya, we're not having an affair. I hate to say it, but Mist is very old. I never liked her, and she never liked me, but I believe she wants Kylara to have a mother once she's gone, and that's why she's turning a blind eye."

"But . . . Blake is having an affair with you, right?"

She sighed. "Yes, sweetheart, we're having an affair, but it's more than that." Grace smiled, envisioning what would come. "We don't know what will happen next, but we do have ideas."

". . . so, have you ever thought about writing a book about the evils of cheating?"

I actually like Kylara the best of the bunch of girls. She seems the most put together and very beautiful. She is the offspring of Mist though...
I do so hope things work out for Grace, she's been unrightfully alone for quite some time.

Still hate Jason.
Still REALLY hate Jason.

I think a moment without any men at all would do all of them good. They keep messing things up because they cannot keep their hands off the two men. Someone should put them in an all female convent. And yes I mean Mist, Grace AND Treasure.

That's it, I've had it with Grace, Treasure, Blake, and Jason. They no longer exist. The household is now just Aliya, Kylara, Mist, and Cyllia. No one else. Just an evil old woman and three teenage girls.

(You get another update today only because I have reached the point at which I can play no longer without the vote on here so I am bored out of my mind and no other project will satisfy! And, for the record, I'm surprised that everyone is giving Jason grief and leaving Blake alone when he cheated on all three women. I mean, seriously people!)

* * *

Of course, Aliya was the first one to find a Prom date. She didn't even remember the guy's name, but he was cute enough and certainly enamored with her.

"You know we have to find dates," Kylara muttered through the pie.

"You're fighting a losing battle, Auntie," Cyllia laughed. "And I don't see why I have to find a date! None of the people at school are attractive in the least."

"Come on, Cyllia! Aliya would have a wonderful time finding you a date, and she's been acting so weird lately--it would cheer her up so much! Prom is only one night, and we'll be leaving right after it ends."

"Sure, whatever," she groaned. "Just make sure she doesn't choose an airhead."

Aliya squealed with joy when Cyllia broke the news and rushed off to her sources. "Can you think of anyone, Thea? He has to be cute, and smart--really, really smart. Any ideas?"

"What about the new kid, Rusty? He's--"

"Oh, hi, Aliya." Cyllia walked towards them with an awkward little wave. "Is this--the, um . . ."

"Hi, I'm Thea," she offered. "Aliya was just telling me that you needed a date for the Prom."

"Ooookay, so . . . would you like to go with me?"

Thea gaped. Aliya winced. Obviously she had missed something here. "Thea, can you give my sister and I a moment of privacy?"

"Cyllia, this might seem like a silly question, but what gender preference do you have when dating?"

"Girls. Obviously. How did you not know that?"

She smiled frantically. "Oh, I--I'll go revise my plan for getting you a date, okay? Actually," Aliya pulled out a pen and started scribbling on Cyllia's glove, "I might know the perfect girl for you."

Cyllia sighed, but went to the address to find a striking young woman answer the door. She knew her a little from school, but they had never spoken. Rachael Matlapin-Dreamer.

"W-w-would you like to go to the Prom? With me?" Cyllia stuttered, all too aware that she still had pie all over her face. Why was she so nervous when it came to dating? Everything else was so easy.

"Sorry," Rachael answered, "but you're too shy for me! It's awfully cute, just not my type."

In a split-second, Cyllia wondered, What would Aliya do? Then, What would Mom do?

"Me. You. Prom. Saturday. Don't be late."

"Ooh, so you and Rachael like each other?" Aliya giggled. "That's so great! If only we didn't have finals, or we could all go out on a double date!"

"It doesn't matter if I like her or not, because we're moving in two days," Cyllia reminded her. "Besides--" Here, a desperate ploy to distract her romance-crazy sister "--you still haven't found Kylara a date!"

"Oh my goodness, you're right! KYLARA! Wait--" she shot a desperate look at Cyllia "--she likes boys, right?"

"Why are we here again?" Kylara asked. "This is an art gallery. Teenage boys don't go to art galleries."

"We're looking for smart, cultured guys," Aliya answered smoothly. "Darren Dreamer went to art galleries when he was a teenager."

"And now he's a middle-aged nerd with a teenage daughter who Cyllia is dating."

"Not dating!" Cyllia called. "We're just going to Prom! That's it!"

In the end, Aliya did find Kylara a date: Rusty Lancaster, Lina and Jaycen's son. It didn't take long for the two to connect.

She didn't know that, as she shared her first kiss with the new kid, tragedy commenced at home.

Mist died very early in the morning, right after she got home from work. She greeted Grim with "What took you so long?" and had him hurry through the usual speech so she could get on with her "life" and check out the Underworld. Her work here was done--and besides, she wanted to see Cassandra.

Grace found herself comforting Blake when he grieved and, despite herself, she felt a little twinge of sadness as well. Mist had always hated Grace, and Grace hated her right back, but they had grown closer recently, only to be split apart again by the rampant romances in the house. Mist had been the one constant in Grace's life, and now she was gone forever.

Kylara returned home to find her half-sister and father gazing into each other's eyes. She growled to herself, trying to ignore them. (Blake kissed Grace and walked down the hall to his room.) And failed.

"I want you to stay away from my Dad and Mum before you wreck their marriage, and my family, and--everything! Just like you ruined everything else for everyone else, and you could have spared everyone all of this confusion and freakiness except you just couldn't keep away from Jason ages ago and that started all of this crap--" She paused, breathed deeply. "Just leave us alone!"

"Kylara," Grace answered quietly, "Your mother passed away a few hours ago."

The teenager stared in a state of frozen shock, her mouth still open. Finally, it moved. "What . . . no!"

"It's okay, sweetheart," Grace said quietly. "She lived a long time, and she was happier with you then I have ever seen her. Actually, it was with you and Blake that she was happy for the first time. You shouldn't be sad--she wasn't sad at all. She was excited to see what came next, and she wouldn't want you to grieve."

Later that night, Kylara realized that Grace had gone into Blake's room, not her own, when it was time for bed.

And that, when Blake came home from a late shift at the hospital, he didn't kick her out.

I expect Azokka either to yell at everyone and totally dominate or else get out the popcorn.-Ombradellarosa

Poor Kylara.  Heh, I have this image of Mist ruling the Underworld... if this were Greek mythology, Hades wouldn't stand a chance XD

EDIT:  Also, I think one of the reasons I don't give Blake such a hard time was that he got shafted from the very beginning.  Treasure used him, cheated on him as well, so... I don't know.  Guess I just feel a bit more sympathy for him than I do Jason.

N-No...Noo..Nooo!  This is NOT okay! Mist can't die! Mist can't! She's an evil goddess! Her work was not done, never will be done until Grace and those three girls are mere memories, characters in fables you tell little children to make them obey Mist, then Treasure, then their equally twisted children!

Jason was willingly unfaithful from the beginning, there are several reasons why I don't like him and a lot of them revolve around his inability to make decisions.

Blake totally got the underhand from the second he was in the household. He was Treasure's puppet, not husband. I feel sympathetic for him to reach out to find a woman who would actually show him affections in a way that Treasure wouldn't. Sure Treasure liked him, but she was always running about with Jason (who was willingly going about having kids and falling for Treasure when the marriage should have made him an honest man).

Then after having two kids with two different women, Jason shafts Grace the second the poll is up and immediately falls back head over heals for Treasure (as he did with Grace when the first poll came out). This man doesn't seem to actually TRULY love anyone. He just goes along with whoever he's shoved up with. He has no idea/sense of loyalty and only stays loyal to Treasure because he feels guilty about all the crap he pulled before. He was willing to put his own daughter out in the cold... yet she forgives him over an arcade game and a movie? I dunno, I hate Jason with a passion.
While Blake has committed quite a few negative acts, it pales in comparison to Jason. Besides, within the story now, Blake isn't necessarily cheating on Mist if their relationship was coming to a close. Based on story hints it appears that Blake was merely trying to be happy with another woman he had feelings for as he prepares to lose the one he loves. However, it did make me a bit upset to see them so ready to forget Mist, I hope that will be addressed shortly, if not, it may cause me to feel a little less sympathetic towards Blake.
Even still, he's still a whole lot better than Jason.

I despise Jason, but not Blake for very different reasons. Jason made no real choice, he just went cavorting about as he pleased and left his fate to others. I can't abide someone willing to let their fate be dictated to them. I started to like him when he started cheating again (After Grace was heir), because it looked like he was defying us, but now, again, he has been dictated to and is perfectly happy with such choices being made for him.
I realize that Jason isn't really trying to game the system and have all the fun for himself, I'd like him for that. He legitimately DID NOT KNOW what he wanted, and that is why I hate him So.

Blake, Blake was gaming the system from what I can tell. I still kinda like Blake over that. He's remorseless and seemingly casual about it.
