Useage of correct grammer--EA?
« on: May 25, 2013, 10:30:07 AM »
This can be ignored, deleted or whatever, it is more of a curiousity of mine about how others feel of should creaters of games, EA and others, use correct grammer.

I have seen lots of time the word  "got" used incorrectly.  I am NOT an English major and am working right now on correct my gammer when I speak, not type.  I have written enough college papers to subconsciously do as correct grammer as possible.

What got (correct word would be had) me thinking of this was when I was talking to my hubby I said "I got to get my socks . . . " then stopped and corrected myself to "I have to get my socks . . ."

Which had me wondering, should EA be more observant of grammer in the bubbles  that appear for various reasons, telling players something, for example their sim received (in place of got)  ________  in the mail.

I'm not a grammer expert, but I do know some and everytime I read an incorrect one as I play I cringe and want to go and smack upside the head the individuals who write these words.
Am I alone in this, does anyone else feel that game creaters should use correct grammer to help educate players and be an example of speaking/writing properly?

Or am I expecting too much out of programers, creaters, whoever writes the words in various games.

Since the primary meaning of "get" is "receive," your example is not particularly illustrative. That said, yes there are instances when EA's pop-ups and other messages could benefit from stricter editing. Sometimes I edit mentally; other times I have to concede that the shorter version (conciseness being a virtue in computer games) is unfortunately the one with less correct usage.

I think a lot of the comments in the bubbles, etc, are written in the vernacular.  A lot of people don't use correct grammatical English in speaking, even though they might in writing.  Having those incidental comments worded the way people speak rather than the way a careful person would write probably makes them sound more "real".  I've noticed examples of that too, Janna, and I think they're probably aiming for the sort of realism in which people don't always speak grammatically.  At least, that's my guess as to why they chose to do it that way.  :)
