The real Lernaean (checked on wikipedia for the English spelling of that since it's spelled differently in the Swedish texts I've read) Hydra (offspring of Typhon, the father of all monsters, and Echidna, the mother of all monsters) was sent by Hera as part of her assassination attempts on Heracles (which he is called in Greek mythology). Everytime one head was cut off, several new ones would sprout, and even if you managed to permanently cut off each head, one head was always remaining as the hydra was immortal just as the gods (both Typhon and Echidna are fully gods).

Heracles managed to kill the hydra as part of his "twelve labours" by first decapitating each head and then burning the remaining stump with a torch to ensure that new heads couldn't grow. When he reached the only head that could not be decapitated, he managed to trap it under a huge boulder he threw on the monster. Thus the hydra was defeated.

Why you are connecting it to water is because in Latin, "hydra" can be any water snake and in Ancient Greek, "hudor" means water.

EDIT: Maybe we can try to turn this back to discussing Sims 3 usernames? :)

Actually the name Hydra is sort of creeping me out now!  LOL  I can sure see why Gene Simmons liked it though.  Guess he forgot the end of the story where it is defeated though, huh?

My guess is that the tatoo is real and the arm is photoshoped.  ;D
Just kidding.

WHAHAHA, how close you came to the truth... I will just not admit how right you are, in a oposite way. :P

@swede1992: Than I must have seen several other versions of the hydra where Heracles cuts of the last head to. Didn't know the specie was immortal like a god. Did the creature ever escaped you maybe know? Forever troubt under a boulder is a little bit of animal cruelty in my opinion. :P

Actually, as with all hero myths there are variants. I know one almost as common version as the one I told you may refer to, where the secret of killing the Hydra laid in its own venom (the Hydra was said to be so venomous you'd die if you walked in its tracks). Heracles would dip his sword in the Hydra's blood after cutting off the first head, and used that to 'permanently' cut off every single head. Personally I think this is a weird version since it doesn't stick with what happens later with the labours (that is a too long story to be told here), but sure, I've heard that variant.

In either version, the Hydra led indirectly to Heracles' death: Heracles dipped his arrow into the blood of the Hydra (just in case, since it's a perfect-kill weapon). Heacles later used that very same arrow to kill the centaur Nessus when he tried to kidnap the wife of Heracles, Deianeira. The centaur managed to trick Deianeira into taking Nessus' blood-soaked tunic before dying, making her believe that it would make Heracles stay true to her for ever. When she later suspects Heracles of having an affair with another woman, she gives this "Tunic of Nessus" to Heracles believing it will help her. Since the blood of Nessus had been poisoned by the venom of the Hydra, that very small amount on the tunic eventually managed to kill Heracles, except literally half of him, his divine side. At that moment, Zeus intervened and raised Heracles to divinity and true immortality.

If you're referring to me (one other referred to snakes; I used 'reptilian' which still fits  ;)) it's because 1. I'm more familiar with Latin, though by no means an expert and 2. if you used hydra in an English word (or to start it) it usually refers to water. Examples: hydrate, dehydration, and, uh, I'm sure there are others though looking it up on dictionary.com, I see it originates from 'hydr' and we're back to the Greek again.  :D

My mention of them never giving us pet snakes in the game was my lame attempt to get back to the Sims.    ;)

I think I said this already somewhere, but my username is from one of my favorite big cats: neofelis nebulosa, commonly known as the clouded leopard, though it's kinda tied with panthera onca (jaguar) in the bid for first place for me. I didn't want anyone mistaking me for a die-hard Pantera (the band) fan, so I went with NeoFelis. I do like rock and metal (amongst other genres), but I just can't think of any song by them I like, at least not off-hand. No offense intended to Pantera fans. Because of the popularity of The Matrix series, I don't want to be called Neo. Nothing against the movies (though I only saw the first one) but I'd prefer people call me by my full username so there's no confusion. I include myself in that category, because if someone here referred to Neo and meant me, I might not realize it.  ;D

@Swede:
Thank's for the mythological explanation. Those stories are keping interesting.

@Templesmom:
If I find any topic asking for avatar explanations, I probably will answer. :P But you all are driving me to much off topic and as a good-boy-who-follows-the-rules I am, I will not let that happen. ;) I've already recently made an new topic about 'Where did your profile name come from?' If I also have to made an topic 'Where did your profile avatars came from?' I will loose my originality I am afraid. ;)
