Breagadoir had gotten an anonymous tip about a case he was investigating. All the clues pointed him to this dark alley. It was not a place that naturally imbibed a feeling of safety.
The elven prince snuck into the alleyway with no hesitation. He had no doubts this alleyway held threats, but he knew the threat
he brought was worse.
His phone started ringing unexpectedly. The caller ID indicated it was his one-time lover and sometime protégé, Nightmare.
"You've made lots of enemies," she said as he answered. "Many, many enemies."
"You offended the fairy king himself. He knows you've been brazenly messing around with his queen. And the fairies hold many secrets. Many dark secrets."
"Is there a point to this?" asked the prince.
"Absolutely," said Nightmare, a wicked glee in her voice.
"The keeper of the dark secrets, your rival Pip Goodfellow, shared a scroll with others you've offended. Your neglected son, Billy; Beatrice Crumplebottom; Joe MacDuff, whose family you have mistreated in countless ways, and one other..."
"Who's this 'other?'" asked the prince.
"Me."
As the magic wielding trio of Joe MacDuff, Beatrice Crumplebottom, and Billy Durwood began chanting an incantation, and the ground began rippling, Breagaoir simply wondered what he had done to cause this betrayal from Nightmare.
