My SIMS refuses to harvest a plant--WHY
« on: November 08, 2009, 06:57:17 PM »
Why is it that all my sims will not harvest? they used to harvest, but now, whenever i click on harvest, they will just ramble.  I tried everyone in the family to ask them to harvest, but they still won't..

Why is this happening? HELP!

Is it maybe a pathfinding issue? Is there clear access on one side?

It sounds to me that you may have a pathing problem and that they can't get to the plants to harvest them.  Have you tried to harvest wild plants around town?  Is it just on your lot that the problem is?

Yeah and keep in mind that something as small as a sprinkler can block access.

I had this problem and it was because I made the plants 3 rows deep without a row in between each.  I could work the outside plants but not the ones on the inside.

karlita: is your sim just standing there looking around? I've had this problem once and it's just a bug in the game that you have to wait a while for then to do stuff. (Once had a sim miss a whole day of work because he refused to listen to me about "Go to work". Same deal with a wilting omni.)

That has happened to me a lot when switching uniforms, but only if it's the first time they're wearing a certain uniform. But not while harvesting, that's new to me. Funny how these things can affect us all differently.

Try deleting the sprinklers, if you have any. They can get in the way

Yeah I noticed this problem before too, until I started putting a row in between each like this:

XXXXXXXX
_________
XXXXXXXX
_________
XXXXXXXX

where the X's are plants and the _'s are places to walk.

Good tip. A free row is a must. This is how I set up all gardens:

   XXXXX
-------------
XXXXXXXXX
-------------
XXXXSXXXX
-------------
XXXXXXXXX
-------------
   XXXXX

The "S" is where the sprinkler sits.

To get more plants under the water, you can edit your rows like this

   XXXXX
XXXXXXXXX
XXXXXXXXX
-------------
XXXXSXXXX
-----H-------
XXXXXXXXX
XXXXXXXXX
   XXXXX

As long as you have the red X's with access from the outside, the gardener can get to the rows fine. And the orientation of the sprinkler matters.  The 'hose' (H)will make it two squares wide if you plant in line with it as opposed to perpendicular (90 degrees sideways)...  The tracking gets a little wonky though as the sim cannot walk over the hose segment in the row.  The format I show above is the best I currently have for plants per autosprinkler.
So let me see if I read this correctly: As long as the hose is perpendicular to the rows of plants, this formation will work? Or is it parallel to the rows of plants?

Perpendicular to the rows of plants.

This is really good advanced info on gardening — the kind of stuff I eat up. Very useful for the upcoming nectar tourney. What I've found with all of the gardening my challenge characters have done is there's pretty much a limit as to how many plants one Sim can take care of in one day — especially if there's other stuff that has to be done as well. 2 full gardens is about it. That would be 88 plants with Horkslair's layout. That actually might simply be too much when trying to map out a strategy for the nectar tourney because the Sims will have to have plenty of time to make nectar as well. Time to investigate.

Digging a 5 level deep dungeon wine cellar seems like the obvious way to get the maximal aging effect for your Nectarium wine rack storage of your vino.

But, I don't know if nectar ages any better the lower you go vs just the standard one floor below. I'm pretty sure Carl never tested that theory, and I didn't have Zeus and Hera test that out either. My understanding is it's basically 10% added to the value of the bottles. But, maybe the deeper you go, the more the value.
