Surrounded by Family - do grandchildren count?

Does raising grandchildren from babies to teenagers count towards completing the Surrounded by Family lifetime wish? How about nieces, nephews or, for that matter, completely unrelated Sims? Or does it have to be the Sim's own children?

They have to be connected to the sim with a parent-child connection. However, this also means that adopted babies count towards the total too.

When I lasted tested it, no. Kids from a previous relationship don't count. :/ (That was back when Generations first came out.)
Leighton and my sim both had the same LTW, he had 1/5, and she had 0/5, even though she had helped him raise his son, and he aged to teen in their home.

I have to wonder though... Sam was already a Toddler at the start of the game... so technically you couldn't raise him from Infant to Teen... what about cases like Claire Ursine? If you married her right away (before she gives birth) if that would count towards your total? I mean the child wouldn't be your Sim but you would be raising it (as a parent figure) from infant to teen!

I'll give it a test and come back with some answers.

Unfortunately the answers I've found are not pleasant.

I was almost positive Claire's daughter would show up as counted for this LTW... but it isn't so. I made a male Sim with the LTW of Surrounded by Family, I got him a job on the very first day the minute he step foot on the ground and then ran him over to woo Claire. She hadn't even started showing until after the rushed romance and the wedding. My Sim raised that child in every aspect of the word.

Claire (her Sim in this game at least) was the most neglectful parent I've ever seen. I actually had to lock her out of the nurseries multiple times. My Sim was the one that got up, fed her, taught her to walk, talk and potty. He helped her with her homework, took her to the Hospital for her Flu Shot... everything.They were Best Friends, and now that she's a teen she still hasn't shown up on his marker. Bummer.

What stage does an adopted child have to be in? Toddler? Youngest you can adopt is toddelr right? So is it toddler?

So, if they don't show under your sims portrait in the family tree. It doesn't count?

Let me see if I can gather everything into one post. 

The Surrounded by Family LTW states:  "Raise five babies from infant to teen".  Your Sim has to be the parent of the child, which means either natural born or adopted.  And, yes, this means there has to be a direct line from your Sim to the child on the family tree.  Step-children do not count.  A child born outside the household will not count because your Sim doesn't raise him/her.  The child has to live in your Sim's household in order to be raised by that Sim.  There are no other requirements for the wish to be fulfilled.  It doesn't matter who takes care of the children.  As long as they live in the household, it will count.

In the LTW description, it specifies from infant to teen.  An Infant is the first age of a Sim, with the blanket wrapped around the Infant.  The game sometimes refers to them as Babies.  The children that can be adopted have the option of being Baby, Toddler, or Child.  In this case, Baby = Infant.  If your Sim adopts a Toddler or Child, it will not count toward the LTW.

I have had the game count a child, adopted in the Child stage, successfully added towards the Surrounded by Family LTW.  I tried it several times with success.

Both children adopted in my test were child aged and both counted. Adoptions can be baby, toddler, or child aged.

Changed Jared Frio's LTW to Surrounded by Family. Aged Jared and Claire's baby to teen. Child counted. Jared did not live in same house and had never met his child.
