Being at work and therefore, unable to confirm, but doesn't the gameplay portion say it increases your athletics?

The description for the item says "boost your Sim's athleticism" which I take to mean that it increases the athletic skill, as Shirin says.  I'm sure I remember hearing something to that effect in one of the live broadcasts.  Haven't tried it yet myself, though.  Of course, if a Sim had already maximized the athletic skill, it wouldn't show any skill increase.

I started a game and bought the house named Cozy and Content and there was an egg in it.  I had my sim talk to it about friends and existentialism and when it hatched it was a black dragon and immediately bit her !   :o   ;D   I thought she would get a purple dragon, so was surprised it was black.  I wonder how much the talking about existentialism is a factor in the color, and the paradox, how does that affect which dragon, anyone know yet?

How long are you supposed to talk to the dragon?  I probably did about half the time in talking, talk some then take a break, talk some more, take a break routine until the egg hatched.

I've had two Sims talk about 5 times or less to the egg (about the weather, producing a green dragon), and gotten a green dragon each time. I think talking about friends produces the purple one.

It definitely does the athletic skill and is not a skill on it's own.  Doesn't even seem to really be a hidden skill either.  Pity really.

I only ever talked to the egg once.  Usually about what I wanted it to become.   Talking about fire and physical prowess seems to get your red.  Friends is for Purple.  Weather is for Green.   Talking about the Egg Paradox and Existentialism gave me a black one.

New Blog from one of the World Builders: (blog link)

The Sims 3 Dragon Valley: Through the Eyes of a World Builder

Check out what one of The Sims 3 Store World Builders, MDT, has to say about the development of Dragon Valley. The Sims 3 Dragon Valley is available to purchase now at The Sims 3 Store, and will be available in stores worldwide starting August 6, 2013.

Dragons! We knew that we were going to have dragons before we even knew what kind of world to build. I believe this is the first world that we tailored in order to fit an object, therefore Dragon Valley was really created as a place for dragons to exist. As always with The Sims, we needed to balance gameplay, design and technical limitations and with this world, we started very early with the idea of a valley that was somewhat isolated which, although existing in the modern age, might harbor dragons and a unique population.

There are so many stories and myths surrounding dragons that we had a lot of material to choose from. We wanted to get a fairly clear story for this world but also wanted to make a world that would not limit the stories that players could tell and discover on their own. To start, we listed out various inspirations that we wanted to incorporate. A Celtic and chivalric influence, some fantasy elements, a town that had been initially built in the middle ages but had developed over time, and dragons across different cultures were all key components. We decided on a rural village feel to the town but still kept elements nearby for gameplay reasons. As the team began to collect reference photos, many of us were enamored with rolling hills covered by stone fences so we opened the deep valley to mirror our initial impressions. We also thought that using images of white cliffs could be used as a way to make this world very different from any one we had already produced but also still appealing and somewhat idyllic.

I made the terrain for this world, so I must admit that I am more thrilled with the final result in Dragon Valley than I have been for any other world. Although very large portions of the world are quite flat to help make it easier for players to add large lots of their own, it does not feel that way. The largest mountain is well within the gameplay area, and your Sims can actually climb it. It looks to me like it could be the ancient home of a dragon. Although we have striking cliffs, the rivers and ocean are still easily accessible for your Sims to swim in.  Initially the world was very green and white but the team added a reddish hue to both terrain and trees, giving the world a warmer feel. We also added some man-made chalk designs in the terrain to help incorporate our fiction world with the long established history from the Neolithic to the present. There are a few Dark Age ruins added in there too – although it’s possible that the dragons may have destroyed them!

There are a few things done differently in this world that may not be recognizable to most people but we see these small changes giving the world an updated look and feel. For example, the road texture is somewhat more elaborate than usual but it is also very close in value to the terrain; therefore, the roads tend to blend in a bit more than they have in other worlds. We carefully placed trees on roads in waves and tendrils, creating windy roads, glens and fields, all bordered by trees. We also used larger sized trees than we normally do to show how some of these trees have been growing for hundreds of years. The trees also have more contrast, to help show how the natural landscape is more important than the man-made, even if the natural world includes some supernatural pets!

Spending time on the fan forums was critical when it came to making big decisions and we made a few changes based on what you were telling us. One of the key pieces of feedback that players had to share was the idea that users did not love The Sims 3 Ambitions lots automatically appearing in thematic worlds – therefore, most players will be pleased to learn that the lots introduced with The Sims 3 Ambitions will not appear automatically. Some of you may disagree about this design so please note that these lots are something we feel we ought to at least try.  That said, we did equip the world with a number of empty lots, many of them quite large, so players can load this world and start building or importing lots right away. Plus, the highest level plain is a sprawling area that is fully ready for players to build and explore while still being nearby to all the rabbit-holes and gameplay that Dragon Valley has to offer.

I am really looking forward to seeing how players make this world their own and on behalf of The Sims Store team, we hope Dragon Valley inspires you to tell new stories, befriend a dragon  and play with life!

Is there any information yet on how long the dragons live, what they eat, and do they mate (can you breed baby dragons, or do you always have to buy the egg?

They said in the broadcast that dragons will live forever.   I don't know if that's true if you ignore them though.

As mentioned before you don't actually play the dragons so there is no breeding.  There is always buying an egg or a dragon (Buydebug) or possibly finding one out in the wild.  You don't choose what to feed them either.  It's just an interaction to feed them.

The dragons are not pets like any other pets in the game.  They are literally an object you get from buy mode that can bite you.

Edit: I went ahead and sent out tweets to the two Gurus who did the broadcast to make sure that this includes if they are not fed for a while.  I'm fairly certain they are more of an object than a pet as far as game mechanics go.

Also - Sharing a picture with everyone so it's not a double post.

As I mentioned in an earlier post, I wasn't able to purchase Dragon Valley.  If you have EA Cash Cards/Gift Cards, you can definitely purchase the world, though the steps are a little convoluted.

With some help from EA, here is the link they gave me:

The pertinent info is by LadyWindrunner15, and roughly in the middle of the page.

Baby dragons that are sold on same day of hatching go for $1000.

Edit: Also, when talking to an egg about friends, I've so far picked up a black dragon, and a red one. No purple.

This is something I'm glad to hear, I'd like them to turn it off on all worlds personally and go back to actually asking if you want them placed, do you get the "There are exciting new lots to be placed" pop up when you start a new game in Dragon Valley or just nothing?

Also it comes with ruin pieces like Monte Vista did, in the broadcast I remember them saying you can flip them but I never have worked out how you get the bottom part that hides in the ground to be the top part, could somebody who knows enlighten me please? because if I do get this I'd love to use them for a ruined junkyard like I did for Monte Vista.

You get nothing.  It just goes to the screen where you either choose a household or make your own Sim.

I bought this world solely for the Baby Dragons.  But I have to say...  it is just stunning.  I certainly wasn't expecting this beautiful architecture and landscape.  My husband was born in Ireland and I know he's going to get a kick out of looking at Dragon Valley.

@Pam,
I know this is off topic, but man, do I envy your husband, I soooooo want to go to Ireland some day.  Probably won't ever but still wish.  If I add up from both side, mainly my father's I am 3/4 Irish and the other is Welsh and some French.
My sociology of Appalachian instructor said that explained why many in my home area feel the need to have hills around us, it is a heritage passed down in many ways of living in hilly countries such as Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

All I know is I have to have my hills around me or I feel trapped, exposed.

Anyhow, I hope someday to be able to go and find my grandmother's family.

Thanks, Janna.  His dad was full blooded Irish and his mother is a Texan.  Both he and his sister were born in Ireland, but they moved to Texas when my husband was about three years old.  He doesn't remember any of it, but he has dual citizenship, so, technically, he could move there any time he wants.

Back on topic...  I'm playing the Eames household and they had a dragon egg in the attic.  The mother talked to it a few times with a variety of topics.  Weather, friends, and existentialism I believe.  The dragon hatched to be red.  Both the mother and father in this household have the athletic trait.  I'm curious if anyone else has played this household and what kind of dragon did you get?

The dragons appear to be made like the large birds.  They have the same motions and movements.  Mine (Spark) just stands on the floor if nobody is doing anything with him.
