How did roommate become part of household?
« on: March 27, 2013, 09:04:22 AM »
Hi,

I asked a sim to be a roommate, everything was fine, he was not controlled by me, went about his business left the house, went to work, then all of a sudden he became part of the household and I had to control him.  I even got a message to ask for rent but no option came up in conversation at all to ask him for money.

Was it something I did wrong? Just curious as to why that would happen.  Thank you. :)

Do you have University Life the expansion?

I've noticed before that you've said before you didn't know if something was Sims 3 or University Life. University Life is Sims 3.   The way Sims works is you have the base game and you have expansions but they're all the same game as you can't play any of the expansions without the original.   It just adds to the game play not replace.

Roommates came in a patch but they weren't supposed to.  So for those that don't have the expansion, the game will at times get confused and on a reload of some kind will merge the household back together.   Because Roommates take up a household slot, they get put in with all the rest.

I've had the roommates join the household on loading a save glitch.  It happened most often when I only had the patch but hadn't installed University.  Once university was installed a more robust roommate management system was available in the home world.  I don't think there's even the option to enable roommate services if you've only got the patch.  I didn't play it much before installing the expansion, but it seemed the patch only roommates were inherently glitchy (in terms of strange joining/leaving household ways, not corrupting save file ways).

Darstan, whenever that happened to my family I'd kick the roommate out, then immediately invite them back over and ask them to be a roommate again.  It's a bit of a drag, but it works.  If one of your sims has the legendary host LTR they can throw a party and only invite the kicked out roommate - that guarantees the sim will show up and you'll be able to ask them to room with the family once more!

Thanks so much for all your help.

No, I don't have University Life expansion pack so I guess it is just a glitch like you said.  I don't plan on getting the expansion pack, I'm still trying to figure out the Sims3 lol.  I thought University Life sounded like it was geared more towards younger people like college kids.  Not sure if I'm correct about that.

This forum is a big help and I thank everyone for responding to my newbie questions.  I appreciate it and am learning alot along the way and having lots of fun playing this game. Maybe someday I can help someone on here too. :)
