Hmm...you'll see. ;)

My apologies for yet another delay! Life has been nothing short of insane lately, and my current obsession with the hockey playoffs isn't helping matters any. :P I hope to have the next chapter up sometime this week...I just need to do a bit of editing and grab some screenshots. Thanks so much for your patience!

Chapter 20 – Chaos and Nursery Rhymes, part 1

“Want some?”

Morgana looked up as Ethan handed her a steaming up of hot coffee. “Thank you. I could use it.”

“I figured.”

Morgana took the offered cup, savoring the warmth from the ceramic as she took a small sip. It was already well after dark, she had already been at the hospital since six that morning, and from the looks of things she wouldn't be leaving anytime soon.

One of her babies was about to have a baby of her own.

Snowflake Day, six months ago...

Holidays at the Sekemoto house had always been a hectic affair. There were already eight of them to begin with, then nine when Sandi joined the family, and ten after Alexia and Simon tied the knot. Fitting everyone into the living room was starting to become quite the challenge, though neither Leighton nor Morgana minded the chaos.

It was nice having the family back under one roof for a change. With Jeremy at University and Justin's constant traveling with his ballet troupe, it had been well over a year since the family had last been together. Jeremy still had two weeks before he had to head back to University Town, but Justin would be leaving again that next morning. Not exactly Morgana's idea of a vacation, but she took whatever she could get. Even if it was for a short time, all six of her children were home, and that was what mattered most.

But this particular Snowflake Day was also special for an altogether different reason.

A tiny, adorable, very special reason.

Eleven months ago Sam and Sandi welcomed a new little bundle of joy into the world. Jesse was an absolute darling, a cuddly ball of excitement and giggles swaddled in a blue crocheted blanket. This was the little tot's first ever Snowflake Day, and seeing his wonder at the sights and sounds of the season was enough to melt both of his grandparents into a giant puddles of goo.

Morgana didn't think that the holiday could possibly be more perfect. That is, until she opened her gift from Alexia and Simon.

It was the card, rather...a simple handmade greeting painted with snowflakes and a trio of reindeer. Inside was a slip of folded paper, upon which was printed something that only Morgana could read. At first she was confused as to why she was looking at the readout from a med scanner. That was when she caught sight of the heart rate monitor...and noticed that there were two heartbeats instead of one. Her breath caught in her throat as the implications of what she was seeing began to sink in, and she looked at Alexia with tear-filled eyes.

“Lexie dear...are you really?”

To which her daughter nodded, a bright grin on her face.

---

Ethan chuckled as Morgana recalled the tale. “They certainly had a fun way of breaking the news.”

“That they did,” she replied, a wistful grin settling upon her lips. “They apparently had done the same thing the night before with Simon's family and Geoffrey just about leaped through the ceiling from the excitement.”

“How is the old man, by the way?” Ethan asked. “I haven't seen him around here much lately.”

“He's managing, as far as I know. I haven't seen him since a few weeks before he and Nancy left for France.”

Despite being retired Geoffrey usually spent a good amount of time as a hospital volunteer. Lately though, various health problems had kept him somewhat homebound. He insisted that it was nothing serious, that it was just old age beginning to slow him down. “Hey, it gives me an excuse to play with the grandkids,” Geoffrey had told her. “What more can you want?

What more, indeed. And now, he was about to have another grandchild to love.

Except there was one tiny problem. At the moment he was out of the country and wouldn't be here for her arrival. Nancy and Geoffrey knew that they were cutting it close when they planned their annual trip to Champs les Sims, with their return date being only a week before the baby's due date. As Morgana had come to discover in her own four pregnancies, babies will arrive when they want to arrive...and this one didn't want to wait for her grandparents to get home. Late this afternoon, a full two weeks before schedule, Morgana got the call from her son-in-law that Alexia was on her way to the hospital.

Nancy and Geoffrey wouldn't be back for another seven days.

“I'm sure he's disappointed to be missing this,” Ethan added. He glanced down at his watch and grimaced. “And on that note, I'd better get going. I promised Holly I'd help out with the slumber party tonight.”

“Cody and Ryan having friends over?”

“Yeah. Eight of them.”

Morgana chuckled. “You're far braver than I am.”

“Either that or more insane. I'll see you Monday. Provided I survive the weekend, that is.” He smiled. “Give Alexia my congratulations when you see her.”

“I certainly will.”

As she watched the younger doctor leave, Morgana was suddenly struck by just how much had changed in the time she had known him. The fresh-faced, naďve youth that walked into these hospital doors some twenty-one years ago was now the head of the emergency department, a married man, and the father of two teenaged sons. When Ethan began his internship Morgana had only just completed her first year of residency, Jamie was the head of the emergency department, and Geoffrey was still the chief surgeon.

Morgana chuckled lightly. Twenty-one years ago she only had two children—a rambunctious nine-year-old stepson and a ridiculously adorable three-year-old daughter—both of whom now had children of their own.

Or, in Alexia's case, would be having a child in very short order.

“Hey Mom.”

The sound of her middle daughter's voice pulled her out of her thoughts. She looked up and saw Winter slowly approaching her, still in her formal gown from tonight's prom. “Winter? What are you doing here?” She glanced at her watch. “It's not even nine yet. Aren't you supposed to be at the dance...?”

Winter plopped down on the seat beside her, and Morgana instantly knew that something wasn't quite right.  “It wasn't as much fun as I thought it would be so I just decided to leave early,” Winter explained. “I'm not all that into social events, really...”

She knew her daughter far too well to believe that explanation. “What happened?”

The teenager smoothed out the front of her dress, frowning. “Nothing bad. Just...the guy I was hoping would be there didn't show up. I guess he's not much of a fan of dancing either.”

Morgana nodded. If her suspicions were correct on who this young man was, she wasn't entirely surprised.

“I texted him a little while ago, and he never replied. I hope he's all right,” Winter continued. “He's not exactly a social butterfly, though he did say that he'd try to go, but I guess he decided against it. And it's his senior year too, so this really was our only chance to...” Her voice trailed off, and Morgana swore that she saw tears begin to form in her eyes. Winter shrugged it off and quickly changed the subject. “So how's Lexie, anyway? Any word?”

“In active labor, but not quite ready to deliver just yet. Your father is in with her now.”

Winter quirked an eyebrow. “Why aren't you?”

Before Morgana could respond, however...

Mom!

Morgana turned around and saw her son helping his girlfriend through the emergency room doors, the latter clearly in pain as she seemed to be struggling even to walk. From the expression on Hannah's face and the way she was cradling her very pregnant belly, it didn't take long for Morgana to realize what was happening. In an instant she was beside them and helped Hannah into a nearby wheelchair. “When did it start?” She asked.

“About twenty minutes ago,” Jeremy quickly answered. “Her water already broke on the way here and her contractions are eight minutes or so apart. We're probably talking delivery within an hour.”

“All right, let's get her down to the maternity ward and get her settled in.” Morgana smiled and gently patted Hannah on the shoulder. “Did you get the chance to call your parents, dear?”

“N...no,” came Hannah's breathless reply. “Too busy trying not to scream.” She glanced up at Jeremy with wide eyes. “You're with me, right? I don't wanna do this by myself.”

A look of determination crossed Jeremy's features and he smiled, taking her hand into his and kissing her gently on the cheek. “You'd better believe it, Bear.”

Seconds later the mom-to-be was whisked out of sight by the maternity nurse with the soon-to-be father right behind her. Morgana sat down heavily on the couch, suddenly feeling very overwhelmed.

“Wow, you all right, Mom?” Winter asked.

Amidst the chaos of the moment and the realization that her twenty-year-old son would become a father on the same day that her twenty-four-year-old daughter would become a mother, one thought pushed itself to the forefront of her mind:

You're the one who wanted grandchildren.

--End Part 1--

I've been reading through this the last day or so and just finished up. I have to say, I love it! This story is just the sweetest; I swear, Raia you really know how to pull at the heartstrings! I erm, had to clear a little something out of my eyes quite a few times.  :P Such a fun insight into the lives and personalities of the Sunset Valley townies.

I've started trying to use pose player, but where I'm simply making a mild variation of a moment with it, you make art!  I find myself debating whether it is the excellent storytelling or the fantastic screenshots that grab me the most.  Kudos!

Excellent as always, hoping to see the nooboos soon! I think my favourite part is how you are getting the townies involved in the story, instead of ending up in a boring story progression job (Ethan Bunch, Towel Folder I'm looking at you!) and generally fading into the background.

I let Jeremy and Hannah out on their own and bam, she's pregnant within a day. Yay for StoryProgression. :P And thanks!

Excellent as always Raia!  That's a lot happening all at once but babies do have their own timetable.  ;)

Indeed, it is a lot happening at once! For a short time I was debating having all three of Leighton and Morgana's grandchildren appear on the same night, but it made better sense to put little Jesse in the picture earlier on. That would have been just...insane.

Aaaawww!!  Adorable as ever :D

Thank you so much!

Thanks. :) Adding in the other townies has to be one of my favorite parts about writing this, actually. There are so many fun characters and not enough space to put them all! I'm hoping to add a few more cameos in the near future.

I've started trying to use pose player, but where I'm simply making a mild variation of a moment with it, you make art!  I find myself debating whether it is the excellent storytelling or the fantastic screenshots that grab me the most.  Kudos!

Seriously? Your screenshots are absolutely amazing! I love what you're doing with them in your current story. :D

Ethan almost always winds up as a doctor in my save files. Once or twice he was a politician, and I think a cop once as well, but for the most part he's gone to medicine. Have I mentioned how much I love StoryProgression? :P

Thank you very much! And with any luck, you'll be seeing the nooboos soon. I'm sort of on a roll and about halfway finished with the rest of this chapter, so I'm hoping to have it done sometime by mid-next week. Provided that I'm not swamped by work stuff, that is. :P

Chapter 20 – Chaos and Nursery Rhymes, part 2

Five months, two weeks ago...

Morgana cherished her Wednesdays.

She settled onto the couch with a mug of hot chamomile tea in one hand and a skein of yarn in the other. The kids were at school, Leighton was on a road trip with the team, and Morgana had the house to herself. Six blissful hours where she could watch sappy chick flicks, relax, and crochet to her heart's content.

But fate had a slightly different plan this time around, and no sooner had she finished her first row her cell phone began to ring.

It was Jeremy. Morgana glanced at the clock on the cable box and frowned. It was only eight-thirty a.m.--far too early for her normally late-sleeping son to be awake, much less making a phone call.

Something was definitely up.

“Hi Jeremy,” she answered.

“Hey Mom.”

“What's going on?”

A pause. “Er well...I kinda have something to tell you.”

Right away Morgana was on edge. The last time Jeremy had called because he had something to tell her was when he failed one of his classes and was put on academic probation. Then there was the call from three weeks prior to that when Jeremy asked for money to pay off the fine he incurred when he was caught spray-painting the side of the mens' dorm.

She shuddered to think what her rebellious son had gotten into this time.

“Um...do you remember that...um...juice kegger from a couple months back?”

Oh yes, she definitely remembered. A two a.m. phone call from the police station was not something that one could readily forget. “You mean the one where you and Hannah were caught streaking across campus?”

“Ah...yeah, that's the one.”

Morgana frowned. “Jeremy, you weren't arrested again, were you?”

“Oh no, not at all,” her son quickly answered. “But um...something else happened that night.”

By this point Morgana was starting to lose her patience. Just what was he getting at? What else could have possibly happened that night that would still be haunting him more than two months later?

“Hannah's pregnant, Mom.”

Morgana dropped her crochet hook.

“...whaaaat?”

---

The rest of their conversation was somewhat of a blur, but Morgana very clearly remembered a rather awkward visit with Gobias and Zelda later that afternoon...

Things were rather challenging in the days and weeks immediately following. After much agonizing both Jeremy and Hannah decided that it would be best to drop their remaining classes and move back home to Sunset Valley. The two of them rented an apartment close to downtown and Jeremy took a job at the hospital to support them. While cleaning bedpans was far from the glamorous profession that the young man had envisioned, at least it paid the bills.

It was as if someone had flipped a switch in his head. For the past two years getting Jeremy to take responsibility for anything in his life was like pulling teeth. He partied far more than he studied and had more than one run-in with the campus police, leading the University dean to pull Jeremy's academic scholarship. Both Morgana and Leighton had been about ready to tear their hair out.

But now, faced with the reality that he was going to be a father, the old Jeremy was starting to come back. It was a refreshing change of pace, truth be told...even if it did take a life-altering event to do it. As Hannah's pregnancy progressed both she and Jeremy seemed to grow into the idea of becoming first-time parents. More than once Morgana had overheard the two of them talking excitedly over baby names and nursery themes.

Of course, there was the small matter of the two of them not being married, but Morgana couldn't exactly judge given that she was in much the same situation when she became pregnant with Alexia. She could only hope that her son had something in mind for after the baby was born.

“Morgana, love...”

Leighton practically burst into the waiting room, a bright smile on his face. “It's time. She's being wheeled into the delivery room.”

An excited laugh escaped Morgana's throat. “How is she doing?”

“Tired and in pain, but excited,” Leighton answered as he sat down opposite his wife. “You could probably say the same for Simon as well.”

He's in pain?”

“Well...apparently Lexie has one heck of a grip. You know how that works.”

Indeed she did. When Morgana was in labor with the twins she had squeezed Leighton's hand so hard that he could hardly grip a baseball for the better part of a week...

“So what brings you here?” Leighton continued, this time addressing his daughter. “Aren't you supposed to be at the dance...?”

Winter hesitated. “Um...I guess I...” She looked up at her mother for help.

“Let's just say that prom night didn't exactly go as expected,” Morgana interjected as she gently patted Winter on the shoulder. “And besides, this is where all of the action is. Jeremy and Hannah just came in about twenty minutes ago.”

Leighton blinked. “Seriously?”

“Mm-hmm.”

“And she's in labor?”

“Mm-hmm. Her water already broke.”

The expression on Leighton's face was a cross between amusement and utter disbelief. “Unbelievable. Does Jeremy seem to be handling things all right?”

“As well as can be expected. He's back there with her and plans to be there for the actual birth, as far as I know.”

Leighton nodded, his lips pursed as if he wanted to say something more, but decided against it. He was still more than a little bit leery about Jeremy and Hannah. It wasn't so much that they were unmarried—heck, he and Morgana had been in a similar boat before Lexie was born—but both of them were so incredibly young and ill-prepared for such a gigantic step. Leighton had spent many a late night worrying about his son and the grandchild to come, hoping that somehow everything would work out for the best.

Fortunately, Jeremy's turnaround had given him a bit more optimism...but Morgana knew that Leighton was still on edge about the whole thing.

“So is this where the party's at?”

Another familiar voice reached Morgana's ears, and she smiled when she saw Sam casually strolling into the waiting room. In his arms lay the tiny form of his toddler son, dressed in footed pajamas and fast asleep.

“Sandi's got a late shift and I didn't feel like hiring a babysitter,” Sam explained. “He's out like a light.”

Leighton gingerly took his sleeping grandson into his arms and held him close. The toddler opened his eyes briefly and smiled before settling onto his shoulder and closing his eyes again. Jesse was a love, plain and simple.

“They just took her back to the delivery room,” Morgana explained. “It'll be any time now.”

“Yeah, and Lexie's not the only one here,” Winter chimed in. “Jeremy and Hannah just came in and Hannah's in labor.”

Sam looked at Leighton, then at Morgana, a wry smirk on his lips. “Hey, you were the ones who wanted grandchildren.”

And their eldest son never wasted an opportunity to remind them of that fact. In their defense, though, they certainly weren't the only over-eager parents to make their wishes known. From what Morgana had heard Sandi's mother was quite vocal about wanting a grandchild in the last eighteen months or so before Jesse came into the picture, and it wasn't even a year into Alexia and Simon's marriage that they started hearing from Geoffrey...despite the fact that he already had three grandchildren with a fourth on the way.

About a month ago Sam had mentioned the possibility of having a second child. They had originally planned to wait until Jesse was fully potty trained before trying for number two, but with Molly's failing health they decided to expedite the process a bit in the hopes that she would still be around to meet the little one. So far Morgana hadn't heard anything more, but she wasn't about to bring up the subject again; at this stage of the game she already had about as much good news as she could handle all at once.

At least she could take some comfort in the fact that three of her children wouldn't become parents anytime soon. Winter and Abby were far too young, and if Justin ever decided to settle down and have a family Morgana would be very surprised.

The telltale squeak of the waiting room door caught her attention and she looked up, smiling when she saw her son-in-law entering the room. He was clad in full scrubs and looked more than a little disheveled, but was grinning from ear to ear. The reason why was carefully cradled in his arms.

And time seemed to stop entirely.

“Meet your new granddaughter,” Simon breathlessly spoke. “Annabel Celeste.”

Morgana slowly stood and made her way over toward Simon. “M...may I hold her?” She quietly asked.

“Of course.”

Ever so carefully she took the infant girl into her arms, and she was immediately smitten. Annabel. Her daughter's daughter. Morgana felt tears coming to her eyes at the sight of ten perfect little fingers and a pair of gorgeous deep blue eyes.

“Oh my gosh, she's so cute...” Winter cooed. “She looks just like Lexie.”

Almost identical, actually. Morgana could hardly believe just how much her darling granddaughter resembled her mother. For a brief moment in time, it felt like twenty-four years had disappeared and she was gazing down at a newborn Alexia again.

“How is she?” She asked quietly.

Perfect.” Simon's voice was almost wistful. “She did amazingly well. I think Doctor Steel said that as soon as she gets settled into her room for the night she can have visitors...” He gently smoothed back the tiny tuft of black hair on Annabel's head, and Morgana swore that she saw tears in his eyes. Simon was going to be an amazing father, that she knew for absolute certain.

A short time later she heard the sound of footsteps coming from the hallway and the door opened again, this time revealing Jeremy, also dressed in full scrubs. The expression on his face could only be described as a combination of excitement and relief, with perhaps a touch of the same overwhelmed feeling that had hit Morgana earlier.

“He's here...” The young man breathlessly spoke. “My son.”

---

Leighton and Morgana followed Jeremy to Hannah's room a few minutes later and were pleased to find that Gobias and Zelda were already there. The latter was at her daughter's bedside, quietly chatting with the new mother while the former sat on the nearby rocking chair, cradling a tiny bundle swaddled in blue.

“Hi, grandpa,” Morgana greeted him.

Gobias looked up, a contented grin on his face. “Hi yourself, grandma.” He looked back down at the boy. “He's a handsome one, isn't he?”

At that particular moment their grandson yawned, and Morgana couldn't help but chuckle. “What's his name?”

“Augustine Justin,” Hannah answered.

“That way we can call him A.J. for short,” Jeremy quickly added. He seemed a little jumpy to Morgana, and she wasn't quite certain why. The young man made his way over to his girlfriend's bedside, a nervous smile upon his lips. “Justin was pretty flattered when I told him our idea.”

“Wait, where'd the Augustine come from?” Zelda asked.

“Video game character.”

Zelda rolled her eyes. “Figures.”

Jeremy bit his lip. Now Morgana was certain that he was on-edge about something. It wasn't until he sat down on the edge of the bed and took a deep breath that she began to suspect why.

“Jeremy, what are you doing?” His girlfriend asked.

“Something that I should have done a long time ago,” he answered. The young man reached into his pants pocket and extracted a tiny paper box. “You know how that old rhyme goes, “First comes love, then comes marriage, then comes a baby in a baby carriage?” All right...so maybe we got it a bit out of order...but...”

Jeremy opened the box, revealing a sparkling silver ring studded with tiny garnets.

“Marry me, Hannah-bear?”

“Well duh,” came Hannah's mirthful reply. “Of course I'll marry you! I love you, geek boy.”

The four grandparents gazed wide-eyed as Jeremy slipped the ring onto Hannah's finger. Exhausted though she was from giving birth, Hannah was giggling like a schoolgirl as she marveled over the ring that now adorned her left hand. Jeremy, now far less agitated, leaned over and gave her a full-on kiss on the lips.

Morgana felt Leighton's arm slip about her waist and she leaned upon his shoulder.

They watched in silence as their newly-engaged son took their brand new grandson into his arms and brought him over to the bed. Jeremy had grown up so much just in these last several months, and now he had a family of his own. A sense of pride washed over Morgana at the thought.

It couldn't possibly be more perfect.
