I didn't know months could last a whole year! WHAT ELSE HAVEN'T YOU TOLD ME!?!?!

Just how jaded I am from participating all of these years. I frightened my English teacher in the aftermath because of short story assignment. It was extremely creepy, had a pretty major plot twist that punches you in the gut, and he had to lay down after reading it.

My mind is a dark, twisted cesspool that would make Mary Shelley herself rise from the dead and tell me to chill the heck out.

Everything's better with a few strategic deaths. It was just a joke though. Any excuse to panic is a good one.

Chapter 17 – What Change May Come, Part 2

The emergency room was already bustling by the time Morgana arrived. As soon as it became known exactly who they were dealing with, it seemed that the entire hospital went into overdrive. Everyday emergencies were one thing; an emergency involving two children—especially two of their own—was something entirely different.

“Which room?”

“Two,” the nurse replied. “Doctor Bunch is in with her now.”

“Thanks.”

A million thoughts were racing through Morgana's mind. She had seen numerous vehicle accidents during her tenure at Sacred Spleen, and the depth of injury varied greatly from incident to incident. So far she had yet to encounter a life-threatening case...and she hoped and prayed to whatever deity was out there that today would be no exception. This was her daughter. Her little girl. The one whom she was supposed to be able to protect from harm.

And yet, she couldn't protect her from this.

As Morgana stepped through the curtain into her daughter's room she mentally prepared herself for the worst. Instead, she found her eldest daughter awake and alert. Her clothing was torn in a few places and she appeared to have a few cuts and scrapes, but all in all she looked none the worse for the wear.

“Lexie...” She glanced over at Ethan, who was busy jotting a few notes on his pad. “What's the verdict?”

“Amazingly, it looks like she pulled out of this relatively unscathed,” the younger doctor explained. “The scan showed no broken bones and no severe lacerations. She does have a few minor abrasions on her arms, which I’m about to address, but nothing that will require stitches.”

A sense of relief washed over Morgana...accompanied by a wave of tears. She sat down beside her daughter and took her hand, gently caressing it. “I’m glad that you are all right. When Jeremy called me in a panic I feared the worst.”

Alexia half-smiled, but Morgana could tell just by the look in her eyes that her own condition was the least of her worries. “Simon took the brunt of it,” she finally spoke. “The blow knocked him out completely. I...I couldn't wake him up.” She looked up at her mother, her eyes pleading. “Have you heard anything at all? Is Simon okay?”

Morgana sighed, shaking her head. “I honestly do not know, Lexie. Doctor Steel is working on him right now, so you can bet that he is getting the absolute best of care.”

“That's what Doctor Bunch said.”

At that moment the curtain opened again, and a rather harried Leighton stepped inside. He took one look at Alexia and smiled broadly. “Lexie-girl, are you all right?”

“I’m fine Dad,” she replied. “Just a little scraped up.”

Leighton breathed a sigh of relief as he sat down beside Morgana. “Jeremy and Justin are pretty shaken up by all of this. From the way they described it, well...” His voice trailed off. “Let's just say I didn't know what I would find when I arrived.”

“As I was telling Morgana, the scan shows no traces of broken bone or any severe lacerations,” Ethan repeated. “In fact, once I finish dressing the few wounds she does have, I see no reason why she can't be released right away.” He smiled down at Alexia. “Does that sound all right to you?”

“Yes, but...” Alexia looked back at her mother. “I really want to stay, Mom. I want to know if...if Simon is going to be all right.”

Morgana hesitated. On one hand she knew that Alexia needed to go home and rest, but at the same time, this was Simon. Despite every adamant denial Morgana knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that her daughter had feelings for the young man. To send her home while there was so much uncertainty would probably not be in Alexia's best interest.

“So long as you don't mind staying in the waiting room, I see no problem with it,” she finally answered.

It took about fifteen minutes for Ethan to finish his work, and soon enough Alexia was released into her parents’ care. Morgana kissed her relieved husband goodbye and led her daughter into the waiting room. “Are you absolutely sure you want to stay, sweetheart? It will be a couple of hours at least before I will be able to take you home.”

“I’m sure,” Alexia replied. “I just...I need to be here.”

“I understand. I need to get back to the emergency room, but as soon as I know something I promise I will let you know.”

A brief smile crossed Alexia's lips. “Thanks.”

Morgana had mixed emotions about leaving her daughter alone at a time like this. At nearly eighteen Alexia was more than capable of looking after herself, but these were not exactly pleasant circumstances, and if by chance the news on Simon was anything less than positive...

She didn't want to think of what would happen.

As she opened the door into the emergency room she caught sight of Geoffrey leaned up against the wall, staring at his cell phone with a blank expression on his face. He looked up as Morgana approached and smiled briefly.

“How is he?” Morgana asked.

The elder doctor took a deep breath. “Simon has a concussion and several broken ribs. Nothing too serious, though he is going to be in serious pain for a while.” He sighed heavily. “It could have been worse. A lot worse...but he will be all right in time.”

“I'm assuming then that he will be kept here overnight.”

Geoffrey nodded. “Jamie seems to think it would be the best idea, and I'm inclined to agree. Simon will be in at least through tomorrow, possibly another night depending on the severity of his concussion symptoms.” He paused. “What about Alexia? Simon is more worried about her than he is about his own injuries.”

“Other than a few minor lacerations she made it through completely unscathed, amazingly enough,” Morgana answered. “She is actually in the waiting room now.”

“Why is she...oh.” A slow grin spread across Geoffrey's lips. “Well, if she is willing to wait for half an hour or so until Simon is situated in his room, I'm certain he won't mind a visitor. It'd do the both of them a world of good.”

Morgana nodded in agreement. “I'm sure that will make two very worried teenagers very happy. To say nothing of their worried parents.”

“That's for certain..." Geoffrey's voice trailed off. "It's funny, you work in a hospital most of your life, you deal with ill and injured patients day in and day out, but when your own child is there...it's something different entirely.”

At that moment the curtain opened and Jamie peered outside. “Geoffrey, we're getting ready to move him.”

“All right.” He looked back at Morgana. “Go talk to Alexia and let her know the good news. Best not to keep the poor girl in suspense for much longer, anyway.”

“Agreed. See you soon...and tell Simon that I wish him well.”

“Will do.”

About twenty-five minutes later...

Alexia took a deep breath, bracing herself for the worst as she opened the door.

The first thing that caught her eye was just how pale Simon appeared. His eyes were closed, his normally neatly-gelled hair disheveled and matted about his head. He didn't look like himself, not in the slightest. Blinking back a wave of tears, Alexia couldn't help but look away. This was ridiculous. Why was she getting so emotional?

“Maybe because I'm actually in love with him,” she softly mused. With a heavy sigh she sat down on the edge of the bed and closed her eyes. This was just too much.

“Did you really mean that?”

A sharp gasp escaped Alexia's throat and she quickly reopened her eyes. When she glanced over at Simon she saw a distinct smirk on his lips. Had he been awake this entire time...? He opened his eyes slightly and took Alexia's hand in his, causing a chill to run up her spine.

“You weren't asleep, were you?”

“No, just resting.” Simon smiled weakly. “I'm kind of glad that I am awake, though. I finally got to hear the words that I have been hoping for.”

Alexia blushed. “Simon...”

He drew her closer. “Say it again. Please?”

“I'm in love with you, Simon Landgraab.”

And with those words Alexia leaned down and kissed him softly on the lips. She had finally admitted her deepest secret...and it felt as if a giant weight had been lifted from her heart.

“So does this mean you'll finally be my girlfriend?”

At this Alexia laughed. “Yes, you silly goof.”

Meanwhile, just down the hallway...

“So when is Nancy's flight supposed to land?”

“About seven. Malcolm's going to pick her up from the airport and bring her straight here,” Geoffrey explained. “I'm just surprised that she was able to get a flight home from Bridgeport so quickly, but when Nancy has her mind set on something she becomes an unstoppable force.”

“I don't blame her. Never get between a mama lioness and her cub.”

“Exactly...though I probably should feel sorry for the ticket attendant who had the job of dealing with her.”

The two doctors slowly approached the door, but just as Morgana was about to touch the handle she felt a hand on her shoulder.

“Hold up,” Geoffrey whispered. “Look.”

Morgana followed his gaze, her eyes widening when she saw what was going on in the room.

“It's about time,” she finally spoke.

Geoffrey chuckled slightly. “Simon is nothing if not doggedly persistent. He definitely got that from his mother.”

“They're going to dislodge his I.V. if they're not careful, though.” Morgana cringed. “As much as I hate to interrupt...”

“I know.” He turned to look at Morgana, a mischievous glint in his eyes. “And to think, ten years ago they couldn't stand one another. Imagine what sort of change another ten years might bring.”

Morgana couldn't help but smile at that one.

Three weeks later...

“Promise that you'll wait for me?”

“Of course.” Alexia smiled at him and placed her head on his shoulder. “After all, you waited four years for me. If that's not patience I don't know what is.”

Simon kissed her lightly. “I'll be back for three weeks right around Snowflake Day. Maybe we can plan something then?”

“I've heard that Hidden Springs is gorgeous that time of year.”

Morgana sighed as she watched the exchange between Alexia and her new boyfriend. It had been a long time coming, and the two of them looked genuinely happy to be together. These next few months would be key in their young relationship; Simon would be heading off to University at the end of the week, leaving Alexia behind to pursue her dream of playing in the pro soccer league. She knew that it wouldn't be easy, but if it was truly meant to be, the long distance would only strengthen their bond.

Between Simon's tenacity and Alexia's sheer stubbornness, Morgana doubted they would have any trouble.

YAY! Ohmygawd I'm happy!! Simon and Lexie! Simie, Sixie, Lemon, Lexon, Lexmon . . . I will figure out a cute couples name for them! My theory is the reason why Simon's injuries were worst were because he pushed Lexie out of the way . . . but maybe that's the hopeless romantic in me  ::) I am so glad they are both okay, and together! Just like, the scene in the hospital, everyone say it with me now; awwww! Great chapter!

The sounds of joy I just made were not human.

Poor Lexie and her abrasions, though. I was in an accident in gym class back in 2010 and came away from it with so many abrasions and lacerations that I had no use of my hands for about two months, couldn't walk for a week, and I still don't have as much ability to use my hands as I used to because of nerve damage.

SiLex, maybe? :P

Believe it or not, in my original plan Simon was the only one hurt in the accident because he pushed Lexie out of the way. Either you're reading my mind or hopeless romantics think a lot alike.

Raia, this is an awesome story! Like reading a novel which is one of my favorite things to do. I can't wait to read more.

<blushes> Thanks so much. The crazy thing...just out of curiosity I checked the Properties on my story file and found that I've already written over 40,000 words...so it's already nearly the length of a novel. Crazy, that!

Love this awesome chapter. Finally, Simon and Lexi are together. Can't wait to see their future. :)

Thank you much! Guaranteed there will be plenty of Simon/Alexia showing up in future chapters.

Yay! Lexie and Simon are safe. The part where they kissed as cute.  :)

That was probably my favorite screenshot out of this whole bunch, really. That and the one where Lexie was sitting on the bed while Simon was holding her. Pose Player is my friend...though getting the poses to work with teens can be a bear sometimes.

That was way too adorable!  Fantastic, as always Raia!

Thank you so much!

Ouch. :( That does sound terribly painful.

Time to share a couple more unused screenshots. I take way more than I ever use...

Apparently neither Simon nor Lexie are great at skating.

This one just tickles me. It almost looks like Simon is looking right out of the screen at you. He and Lexie wound up with a very high score on the Love Tester, not surprisingly.

Another plot device that was scrapped at the last minute. Sam did indeed have a bachelor party, but the game somehow glitched and the party was over almost before it began.

Next Up: (minor spoilers)

Just shy of three years has passed. It's Love Day, and romance is definitely in the air. What are Simon and Alexia doing all dressed up--and just who is that young lady smooching with Justin?

Thank you all for reading! :D

Chapter 18 - Perhaps Love

SimFebruary 14th

Dear Diary,

Another year has passed, another Love Day with my beloved Leighton, our twenty-first together as man and wife, and he is still every bit the romantic that he was on the day we married.

In recent years, the holiday has become less about Leighton and I and far more about our children. Lazy mornings once spent in each other’s arms have given way to heart-shaped pancakes for breakfast and red and pink construction paper chains draped lovingly over our doorway. This morning we awakened to find a hand-drawn card slipped under our bedroom door with the words “I luv you Mommy and Daddy” scrawled in purple crayon along the bottom.

I just about cried. That little note from Abby is far, far more precious to me than any lazy morning. The way I see it, I have the rest of my life to spend in Leighton’s arms, but our children are only young for a very short, painfully fleeting time. I still have a hard time grasping the fact that Abby is in the second grade, that the twins are driving, and that Sam and his wife have already been married for six years.

Our babies are growing up.

---

A quiet knock at the bedroom door caught Morgana’s attention. “Mom? Can I come in?”

“Sure.”

The door slowly opened and Justin stepped inside. “I was wondering if...um...I could borrow the truck for the afternoon. Les and I were going to go to the gym and practice our lifts, since we've got that recital on Wednesday.”

“Hmm, I don’t see why not,” Morgana answered. “I’m not planning on going anywhere for the rest of the day anyway, and your dad should be back in less than an hour.” She grinned. “Are you and Lesley planning anything special for Love Day, by chance?”

A slight blush flowered on Justin’s cheeks. “N—Not really. The restaurants are going to be crazy tonight, so I think we’re just going back to her place after practice. Her mom is making lasagna.”

“All right,” Morgana replied. “Have fun, be back by nine, and tell Lesley I said hi.”

“I will. Thanks.”

Morgana chuckled as her son left the room. When Justin started ballet lessons as a child neither she nor Leighton expected that it would turn into something like this. Dance was far more than just a hobby; it had become his lifelong passion. Justin had stated more than once that his dream was to one day join a famed ballet company and tour the world, and with his level of skill and dedication, Morgana had a feeling that he just might achieve it.

Of course, having a good relationship with his dance partner helped immensely...

...even if it did cause a bit of a distraction at times.

Justin had known Lesley for years, ever since they were in the same dance class in elementary school. That the two of them wound up dating came as little surprise to any of them, especially given their mutual love of ballet.

It was amusing, now that Morgana thought about it. She always expected that Jeremy would be the first one to enter the dating scene, not his more shy and reserved twin. Indeed, Jeremy was still more outgoing than his brother, but any thoughts of romance were eclipsed by the allure of a game controller and a copy of the latest SkySim expansion.

Jeremy and his gaming buddies (the Fearsome Foursome, as Winter liked to call them) were more or less attached at the hip. Wherever one went, so did the other three...which was usually wherever they had easy Internet access and a steady supply of snacks.

Today that just happened to be their upstairs den.

Morgana didn't mind the invasion, truth be told. She enjoyed the fact that Jeremy had such a close-knit group of friends, and all in all they were good kids. A touch on the noisy side and probably a bit too hyped up on sugar half of the time, but good kids nonetheless. Plus, they gave her a good excuse to order pizza today instead of cook, and she wasn’t about to complain.

“Thanks for the pizza, Doctor S., you're awesome!” The red-head spoke up as Morgana made her way into the kitchen. She thought that his name might be Oliver, but she wasn't sure.

“Yeah Auntie Morgana, thanks a ton,” added Hannah. “So you're sure you don't want to join us, Winter? We could really use you and your wizard character to get past that goblin guardpost.”

“Yeah, and if we manage to defeat the chieftain he's supposed to have one of the best swords in the game,” Jeremy chimed in. “And at least three-thousand in gold and other gems.”

Winter sighed and shook her head. “I’m sure. I promised Abby that I’d take her to the festival today for the egg hunt.”

“Aww, man.” Hannah snapped her fingers. “And here I was hoping that I wouldn't be the only girl for once. You know, with Brent leaving for University soon we're gonna need another player anyway, hint hint?”

“Hey, just 'cause I'm graduating doesn't mean I can't still be part of the team long-distance!”

Winter giggled.

“Wait, this is the game where you guys fought that dragon and rescued that elf girl, right?” Abby asked. She looked up at Winter, her eyes beaming. “Can we do that instead? I really wanna watch!”

“You don't want to go to the festival then?” Winter asked.

“Well yeah...but if we go tomorrow instead then maybe I can go with Darin and Blaine too. Please Winter? This looks like so much fun!"

Morgana rolled her eyes and laughed. “Thanks a lot, Jeremy. You've managed to corrupt not one, but both of your younger sisters.”

“Sweet,” Jeremy high-fived both Hannah and Oliver. “My work here is done.”

Not quite fifteen minutes later the five teenagers and one excited child had abandoned their meal and made their way upstairs. They left four slices of pizza behind and, much to Morgana's chagrin, quite a bit of clutter, but just as she was about to head up the stairs to talk to them she heard the familiar roar of Leighton’s motorcycle pulling up into the driveway.

The yearly team tryouts were today, something that had been weighing rather heavily on her husband’s mind for several weeks.

Lecturing Jeremy on his lack of cleanliness could wait.

Morgana took Leighton into her embrace as he walked in the front door. The expression on his face spoke volumes without him having to say a single word.

“Dare I even ask how it went?”

“I've definitely seen worse,” Leighton began, “but I've also seen much, much better. There were one or two players that we might give a shot on the minor league team, but otherwise...” He sat down heavily on one of the dining room chairs, seemingly oblivious to the mess.

“How does Marty feel about all of it?”

“About the same way that I do. We haven't seen anyone truly stellar since Michael Bachelor joined the team, and that was nearly eight years ago.” He sighed deeply. “It sort of makes me wish that Marty and I were still playing instead of coaching.”

Morgana should have known that was coming. Retiring from the sport had been one of the most difficult decisions that Leighton had ever made, one that he had constantly questioned in the eighteen months since. At fifty he was still in fantastic physical shape, but season after season of overuse had taken its toll on his shoulder muscles and he just couldn't throw the way he once had. Becoming a coach seemed like a natural fit for Leighton, and indeed he loved being able to mold the younger players, but Morgana knew that he missed being on the field.

Having a serious lack of new talent certainly didn't help matters, either.

“You know,” Morgana finally replied, “you could always ask Lexie if she'll switch sports.”

Leighton chuckled. “Believe me, the thought has crossed my mind.” He grabbed one of the leftover pizza slices and took a bite. “But if I so much as mention the possibility her coach would have my head for it. Monika tells me she's one of the best on the team.”

The sound of footsteps on the staircase caught their attention, and Morgana turned around just in time to see Alexia trip off of the last step. Only her quick reflexes managed to keep her from falling flat on her face.

“Good heavens, are you all right?” Morgana asked.

“Yeah,” came Alexia's irritated reply. “I'm just not used to walking in heels.”

“Then why are you wearing them?”

“Because gym shoes don't go with a cocktail dress and my flats are busted.” Alexia balanced herself and straightened out her skirt. “How do I look?”

Morgana looked her daughter over and was nearly overcome with emotion. It was a rare occasion when Alexia wore something other than her workout clothes or jeans. Seeing her dressed up like this reminded her all the more that her little girl was not so little anymore, but a grown woman with a career and a serious boyfriend. “You're beautiful, Lexie,” she replied with a wistful grin. “Now where exactly is Simon taking you...?”

“I'm not sure, actually. All that I know is dinner is involved, but beyond that I have no clue.” She glanced out the window. “I can't believe he flew home just for Love Day—especially with midterms next week. Sometimes I wonder what's going on in that goofy blonde head of his...anyway, I'll probably be home late, so don't wait up for me.”

Both Leighton and Morgana struggled to keep a straight face as their eldest daughter made her way out the front door.

They knew exactly why Simon flew home this weekend.

Two weeks prior...

“Hello? Oh hi Simon, how's University life treating you?” A pause. “Ah...no, she's at practice right now. She should be back...huh? Oh. Catch wind of what, might I ask?”

A sudden shocked expression washed over Leighton's features. “Simon...are you serious?”

Morgana closed her laptop, her curiosity getting the better of her. Why was Simon calling Leighton instead of Alexia? She edged closer to her husband as a bright smile crossed his lips. “Well, I would give you my answer...” Leighton glanced over at Morgana. “But my wife is right here beside me and probably needs to hear the question too.”

“Leighton, what...?”

“Hang on, let me put you on speaker...” Leighton fiddled with a few buttons on his phone and placed it on the table between them. “Simon, can you hear me?”

“Loud and clear,” came Simon's voice over the phone.

“Hi Simon,” Morgana greeted him.

“Hi there Doctor Sekemoto. So...I'm guessing that you're probably wondering what this is all about.”

“I must admit you have piqued my curiosity.”

“Well, I was just telling Mister Sekemoto that I am planning to fly home over Love Day weekend, but I haven't told Lexie yet,” he explained. The young man took a deep breath, then continued. “I plan on asking her to marry me, but before I do I wanted to ask your permission first.”

Morgana couldn't help the surprised gasp that escaped her throat. “Simon, really? Oh my word...” She looked over at Leighton, only barely containing her excitement. "I would have thought, though, that you already knew our feelings on the matter."

“Well yes...but there's no harm in asking regardless. Call me old-fashioned in that respect, I guess,” Simon chuckled. “So you really are all right with the idea?”

“Of course!” Leighton exclaimed. “Simon, you know as well as I do that Alexia is crazy about you, and I know that you feel the same way about her.”

“We would love to have you as part of the family,” Morgana quickly added. “You've more or less been part of the family anyway given how long I've known your father. Does he know, by the way?”

“He does. It was kind of funny, actually. When I called him yesterday and told him that I was planning to come home that weekend he immediately asked me if I was going to propose. It was as if he already knew.”

“Good. That means I don't have to completely button my lips when I meet him for coffee tomorrow morning. But don't worry, neither Leighton nor I will breathe a word to Lexie.”

“I greatly appreciate that,” Simon answered. “I want to make this a Love Day to remember.”

Leighton smiled. “Believe me son...you will.”

Present Day, About Seven Hours Later...

Morgana leaned against Leighton's shoulder, her eyes half-closed as her favorite movie played on the television. Between her normal chores and having her son's friends over for most of the afternoon it had been a very exhausting day...and yet there was no way that Morgana was going to be able to sleep at this point.

Alexia told them not to wait up, that she would be back late...but the anticipation was about killing the both of them.

Finally at about a quarter past ten they heard a car pull into the driveway, and immediately Morgana's heart started racing.

“They're here,” Leighton quietly spoke, the tone of his voice betraying his own excitement. Two car doors opened and closed, then came the faint sound of a key being inserted into the door lock. The front door slowly creaked open, and two sets of footsteps made their way down the hallway, stopping just short of the living room.

“Somehow I knew that you two would still be awake.”

When Morgana looked up at her eldest daughter her breath caught in her throat.

There, adorning Alexia's left hand, was a gold and diamond ring.
