Just discovered this and read it straight through.  I've never tried pairing up Morgana and Leighton but they're a good match - and very sweet together in this story.  I love the way so many of the obscurer townies are making appearances.  I've always had a soft spot for Abraham Finkel.

Thank you so much--I am so glad that you have enjoyed this!

Slightly off-topic, I have a bit of a soft spot for Abraham as well. He was my simself's spouse in my failed immortal dynasty attempt. If I were to have a crush on a sim it would have to be him. ;)

Chapter 10 – The French Connection

About two years later, give or take a month...

From: LadyM @sunsetvalley.sim.net
To: EMorel @champs.sim.fr
Subj: We’re coming!

Dear Edith,

I hope that this e-mail finds you and your family well. It has been far too long since last we spoke, and for that I must apologize. Between juggling a toddler and a full-time job it seems that I hardly have time to myself anymore. Alexia is most definitely worth it, though. :)

Exciting news—Leighton and I will be visiting Champs les Sims! A few weeks ago he surprised me with a pair of airplane tickets, courtesy of a larger-than-expected bonus and a bit of careful saving. (I still don’t know how he does it.) Of all the anniversary gifts he could have given this was the very last thing that I expected! Have I mentioned how much I adore my husband?

Our flight leaves one week from tomorrow and we will be there for six days. I know that this is short notice, but if it is at all possible I would love to see you sometime while we are there.

With love,

Morgana

My dearest cousin,

This is exciting news indeed! Your timing could not have been more perfect, as Gerard and I are both off during that week. We would absolutely love to see you again. Just let me know your itinerary and we will see what we can plan. I imagine that the nectary is on your list of places to visit, and knowing you most certainly the art museum.

Do not fret about the lack of communication. I had a toddler once too, so I completely understand. ;) Speaking of which, you wouldn’t happen to have any recent photos of your little one, would you?

Yours truly,

Edith

P.S. – Your husband sounds like a wonderful man. Gerard and I cannot wait to meet him.

Subj: Re: We’re coming!

Edie, you know me too well. Of course I must visit the art museum, and I already have several requests from friends for bottles of nectar. Let's just say we already plan on bringing an extra suitcase to accommodate all of the souvenirs that we will be bringing back.

Ask and you shall receive. :)

Isn't she just precious?

I still can't believe that my baby girl is already two. Leighton and I have been talking about possibly having another child, but we've both been so busy lately that we haven't really had the chance to think about it too much. We shall see, I suppose...

Anyhow, we are mostly packed and ready to go. Only a few more days—and I can't wait!

See you soon,

Morgana

Just checking up on everything. How are Sam and Lexie?

The flight went pretty smoothly with only a bit of turbulence. Morgana and I both slept for a good half of the trip, so at least so far we're not experiencing much in the way of jet lag. Tomorrow morning we meet Morgana's cousin and her family at the nectary, which should be fun.

I forgot to mention that there is a list of babysitters on the fridge in case you need some time to yourself, and if either Kaylynn, Michael, or Malcolm are unavailable Marty said that he and Justine can look after Lexie for a while.

Call me if you need anything.

Take care,
Leighton

It's only been 20 hours since you left. Lexie and Sam are fine. Sam is out at the park with Sandi and the Keaton boy, and Lexie is watching the shopping channel with me.

If they happen to have plum nectar I would greatly appreciate a bottle, hint hint.

Stop worrying and have fun, will you? :P

Love,

Subj: Nectar

Hey Gobi!

I got the nectar that you requested. Leighton and I sampled some at the nectary and it is quite amazing. I think that you and Zelda will quite enjoy it.

France has been simply amazing so far. It has been nice to reconnect with my cousin again. The last time we met in person her son was a toddler; Pascal is fourteen now, if that tells you anything.

We spent most of the day at the nectary, getting the grand tour of the grounds and learning the art of nectar making. I even got the chance to try out my own skills...which are sadly lacking. I may be half-French, but I am all clumsy when it comes to stomping grapes. :P

Yes...as a matter of fact it is as messy as it looks and both of us were in desperate need of a wash. We're back at the hotel now, and as soon as Leighton is out of the shower we're going to grab a bite to eat at the café and head back to the nectary for their nightly tasting.

I hope that everything is well back at home. Tell Zelda I said hello!

All the best,

Morgana

Subj: Re: Nectar

Hey there little sis!

Thank you so much! Dad was very fond of cranerlet nectar and I've always wanted to give it a try.

Things are going pretty well. There was a bit of an explosion at the lab yesterday and a few of the cowplants got loose, but we managed to get things back under control fairly quickly. No serious injuries, thankfully, though Judy needed stitches...and Gage has a minor concussion...and the rats decided to gang up on me again and chew on my fingers. But all in all, not a bad day.

I have a bit of news. You know how Zelda was sick with the simflu earlier this week? Well, it wasn't the simflu...

She's pregnant!

We were going to wait until you came back to say anything, but I just couldn't hold it in any longer. I can't believe it! I'm going to be a daddy!

Aaand I'm scared out of my mind. I know nothing about babies or being a father. Maybe you and Leighton can give me a few pointers...? I could use all the help I could get.

Best wishes,

Gobias

Gobi, only you would say that a day filled with lab explosions and rampaging cowplants “went pretty well.” :P I'm glad that no one was seriously hurt.

Oh my goodness! Congratulations to both of you!

Don't sell yourself short, Gobi. You'll do just fine—and besides, you and Zelda have a good six months or so to read and prepare. We can chat more when I get back. Until then, take care, give Zelda a few backrubs, and I will see you in a week or so.

Hugs,

Morgana

Subj: Plasma fruit

Hi Geoffrey,

We had a bit of a mishap at the nectary this evening. There were several bottles of nectar up for tasting, and it wasn’t until after we had sampled several vintages that we discovered that one of the bottles contained plasma fruit nectar. Fortunately I hadn't yet gotten around to sampling that particular one, but Leighton on the other hand...

I seem to recall plasma fruit from my toxicology labs, though I can’t quite remember whether or not it has any long-term ill effects. Right now Leighton is resting and it seems that the worst is over, but I wanted to double-check to make sure that we don’t have anything else to worry about.

Thanks,

Morgana

Subj: Re: Plasma fruit

Morgana,

I am a little surprised that the nectary would have such a nectar out for sampling, but I suppose one cannot disregard vampire tastes. No, Leighton should be fine once the plasma fruit is completely out of his system. Just treat it as you would a case of food poisoning and keep him hydrated, if you can.

Tell your husband that I wish him well, and I certainly hope that the rest of your vacation goes along a bit more smoothly. From what I hear Champs les Sims is quite an amazing place. My wife’s great-uncle lived there for most of his life and I believe that the family still owns a chateau in town. One of these centuries I would love to visit—provided I can tear Nancy away from her job for a week. :P

Enjoy the rest of your time off, and I will see you when you return.

Best regards,

Geoffrey

Hi Geoffrey,

Thanks for responding so quickly. Leighton is starting to feel better and managed a bit of breakfast this morning, so hopefully by later today we will be able to resume our adventures to some degree. We plan to visit the art museum this afternoon if Leighton is up to it, then tomorrow we were thinking about venturing over to an ancient Celtic ruin to see what we can find.

By the way, Yumi called last night and told me that your son is a fantastic babysitter. Coming from my mother-in-law that is quite the compliment. :P

All the best,

Morgana

P.S. – I heard from Jamie that we will be getting a new intern soon. Any idea when he/she will start?

Hello Morgana,

Malcolm was pleased to hear the compliment. Heaven knows he has plenty of practice with his little brother.

I am purposely refusing to answer your question for two reasons: 1) I don’t conduct work-related business over my personal e-mail account, and 2) you are on vacation and work should be the last thing on your mind.

Best regards,

Geoffrey

Hi Daddy!

Guess what? I got an A on the spelling test! Miss Alto said I did good on my science project too! I’m being good. I am playing a lot with Lexie too.

How many more days til you and Mom come home? Did you see art? Miss Alto says that France has lots of art.

I’m going to go and play. Email me back!

Love,

Sam

Hey buddy!

Good job on your spelling test and your science project! I’m so proud of you!

Your teacher is right, there is a lot of art in France. Mom and I went to an art museum this afternoon, which was a lot of fun. I will show you the photos when we get home. Tomorrow we plan on visiting an ancient Celtic ruin. We might even find some treasure, you never know. ;)

I will see you in three days. Keep being good for grandma, and give a big hug to Lexie for me.

Love,

Dad

Wow! You and Mom are going into a real ruin? Just like Simdiana Jones?! That’s awesome!

I hope you find lots of treasure! No snakes though. That wouldn’t be very fun.

Quick question: when exactly did he get the chance to watch a Simdiana Jones movie? Aren’t those a bit too scary for an eight-year-old?

Hi Yumi,

We are perfectly all right. Yes, as Sam mentioned we were indeed exploring an ancient ruin—more specifically, an old Celtic burial site. The place was much larger than we expected and we wound up having to spend the night in one of the underground chambers. It was quite the adventure, and we definitely have stories to tell when we get back.

To give you a small taste of what we experienced...

Both of us are dead exhausted. We’re thinking of cutting our trip off by a day and just heading home this evening. Leighton is on the phone now with the airline to see if we can transfer our tickets. I will let you know our plans once we know for sure.

Sorry for worrying you. As you can imagine there really isn’t much in the way of cell phone signal fifty feet underground.

Hugs,

Morgana

My dearest cousin,

I trust that this note will find you safely landed and at home. This has been a most enjoyable visit; it was a pleasure to be able to reconnect after all these years.

Please tell Leighton that he has our best wishes for the coming season. He is indeed a remarkable man, and I am glad that we were finally able to meet him. Gerard and I wish you and your family all the best.

With love,

Edie

Oh, this was so awesome!  I love the format of the emails to tell the story!  And of course, the story itself is just so adorable!  lol I was laughing through most of it.  The email from Yumi to them when they didn't contact her was epic though!  Sounds just a worried mama/grandma.

Great update. Love those email-ling. Toddler Lexi looks cute and playful. I think Sam will have great fun time with her. And congrats to Zelda and Gobias. We will see a new nooboo soon. Hoping that Morgana and Leighton's expedition went well. Looking forward for next update.

Gobias' description of a typical day at the science lab was priceless!

Yumii came over as a lot more relaxed in this chapter - but then we've only really seen her from Morgana's point of view before, when they didn't really know each other.  I like her exasperation with the worried parents... and the total panic herself when they were out of touch :D.

I love the format that you've written this update in. Very clever.

Judging by the fact that I first saw Simdiana Jones, as you call it, around the same age as Sam, I realize Sam must be made of tougher stuff than I am. I was most assuredly "scared in the slightest."  :P

Awww I was just reading this up,

Chapter 9 : You had got me freaking, worrying something bad was about to happen to Morgana. It was a beautiful chapter and very heartwarming. As for Nancy driving off to hospital during labour, whew that woman has some guts!

Chapter 10: As with all the others, I loved the format and specially the email addresses! Whats up with the Yumi-screenshot? She's pretty old and I hope will live through:)

Thanks. The e-mail format just seemed to fit what I wanted to do for this chapter, plus it gave me the opportunity to write from several different perspectives, which was a lot of fun in itself.

That reaction from Yumi toward the end...? 100% inspired by my own mother, after she wrote something similar after my husband and I were  out of communication after a stormchase. (Ooops...that was totally our fault. :P)

Great update. Love those email-ling. Toddler Lexi looks cute and playful. I think Sam will have great fun time with her. And congrats to Zelda and Gobias. We will see a new nooboo soon. Hoping that Morgana and Leighton's expedition went well. Looking forward for next update.

I've struggled a bit with Yumi personality-wise--her Inappropriate side in particular. The more I play her the more she intrigues me. One thing that I can't help but do when I play these characters is try and figure out what makes them tick. The way that I've interpreted it is mainly that she is horribly blunt and will speak her mind regardless of if it is appropriate to do so. Her Family-Oriented side is what came out more in this chapter (maybe with a touch of the Inappropriate in regards to Sam and the movie).

I love the format that you've written this update in. Very clever.

Hehe...yeah, if I had seen any of the films at the age of eight I probably would have freaked out. I saw the movie Labyrinth at about that age and was frightened out of my mind. :P

Awww I was just reading this up,

Chapter 9 : You had got me freaking, worrying something bad was about to happen to Morgana. It was a beautiful chapter and very heartwarming. As for Nancy driving off to hospital during labour, whew that woman has some guts!

Mission accomplished. :P The whole flashback scene was meant to be a bit of subterfuge, but at the same time take a glimpse into what Leighton has already had to endure. It was fun poking into his psyche.

Yeah, I see Nancy as being a very take-charge sort of woman, i.e. "If you want it done right, do it yourself." Probably a very impatient sort and in many ways Geoffrey's opposite.

Chapter 10: As with all the others, I loved the format and specially the email addresses! Whats up with the Yumi-screenshot? She's pretty old and I hope will live through:)

Yumi is fine--just terribly frustrated. That was just the animation that occasionally pops up when a sim bangs his/her head against the keyboard. :)

Thank you all so much. :) I don't really have a timeframe for posting the next chapter. I'm debating whether to change course slightly and start varying the points of view like I did in Two Worlds, or possibly start telling the story just from Sam's perspective (since a lot of the focus will now be on the children).

I'm also part of the THBL team for Schip's story The Name's Oliver - Ben Oliver, so keep an eye out for the next story arc. It's going to be a ton of fun. :)

I was about 11 when I saw Labyrinth ans it was so weird that I thought it was the best thing ever lol. Raia, once again you have pulled out tricks from your bag and done amazing things with them. the flashback scene had me almost in tears and the emails back and forth were lovely. I love it! I just spent the last two days reading your other story and now have caught up with this one. You totally inspired me to play Sunset Valley again. And perhaps even document my Goth/Bachelor/Hart save.
I had to smile though, when Morgana got sick at the bachelorette party. She had the very same opinion about getting sick in public restrooms as one of the girls from your other story. (I'm afraid I forgot which as they all looked so much like each other.)
Keep it up!  ;D

Thanks! Sunset Valley is sort of my go-to with everything, it seems. Kind of like that old hometown that you never really want to leave just because you know everyone so well. :P

To update...er well...I've kind of gotten distracted by a few other things. Work has got me a little crazed right now for one, and I finally broke down and got University, which has been eating up most of my simming time (the Altos make for interesting looking plantsims). The next chapter is mostly written, but a bit on the short side. I'm debating whether to leave it as-is or try and add something more. In either case, I hope to have something out this weekend or by early next week.

Thanks so much for reading, and thanks again for your patience. :D

Second Chances - Chapter 11: Sam, I Am
« Reply #149 on: August 18, 2013, 11:22:58 PM »
(Thanks, karlissa!)

Chapter 11 – Sam, I Am

Dear Journal,

Hi, my name is Sam. Mom and Dad call me Sammy. My baby sister Lexie calls me Sammy too, but it sounds more like “Sammeeeeee” when she says it. (She is only three, so she doesn’t really talk that good yet.)

My best friend Sandi calls me Sam I Am. I don’t know why.

Dad got me this journal for my birthday. Mom told me to write in it like I was writing to a real person, and maybe even write stories. I like to write. My teacher says that I’m good at writing, too. Maybe I can be a famous writer someday. That would be really cool!

I guess I should talk about my family. I have a lot of family.

This is my Dad. He’s a baseball player. I guess he must be sorta famous, because people keep asking me if I want to be like him when I grow up. I don’t know yet. Dad is really cool, and I want to be cool like him. I don’t know if I want to play sports, though.

Dad says I have lots of time to think about it. I’m only nine!

This is my Mom. Kind of. My real mom died when I was just a baby so she is really my step-mom. I like her a lot. She’s a doctor, and she’s really smart. She works in the emergency room and saves people’s lives, so that’s pretty awesome.

Dad loves Mom a lot. They get kissy sometimes. It's sort of gross.

I have a baby sister named Lexie. I guess she’s really my half-sister because she has a different mom. At least she’s a whole person though. That would have been weird if she was just half a person. She’s a little fussy and whiny but she’s really cute. I like being her big brother. We have fun playing blocks together. I try to show her how to build things, but she mostly just chews on the blocks.

At least I don't have to clean her potty chair like Dad does. That would really be yucky.

She loves rocking in the rocking chair with Mom.

Did you see Mom's tummy in that picture? Dad told me that Mom was going to have another baby and I was going to be a big brother again! But instead of one baby Mom had two! It really surprised Mom and Dad. It surprised me too. I didn't know you could even get two babies at once!

Their names are Justin and Jeremy. I think that's Justin on the right. Or is he on the left? I don't know. They look too much alike.

We were kind of worried because our house is sort of small. Mom thought maybe that the babies could share a room with Lexie for a little while, but that would have been really crowded. They talked about maybe moving to a bigger house. Houses are kind of expensive though. Dad didn't think we had the money for a brand new house, so instead they built a new room on this one.

It's really really huge! There's a new bathroom too, but I don't think Justin and Jeremy will be using it for a while. They still wear diapers. I'm kinda glad I don't have to change them.

Grandma calls my new brothers “souvenirs from France”. That doesn’t make any sense. Mom and Dad went to France nine months before Justin and Jeremy were born. I asked Dad, and he said he would explain it later. Grown-ups always want to say they'll explain things later when they don’t want to explain things. Maybe I’ll just ask Grandma.

I love my grandma. She’s my dad’s mom. I think she said she’s 76. That’s really old! Grandma is really cool though. She makes yummy pancakes and lets me stay up late and lets me watch any movie that I want.

Don't tell Dad though. He gets kinda mad when Grandma lets me stay up too late.

Finally there is Uncle Gobias and Auntie Zelda and cousin Hannah.

It’s kinda weird though. Uncle Gobias isn’t really Mom’s brother. They’re just best friends. Mom said that “family is not just who you’re born with”. Can Sandi be my sister then?

My best friend is Sandi French. She likes to run around and play on the playground and stomp in mud puddles and ride bikes. Sometimes I wish she was my sister. Sandi doesn’t have any brothers or sisters. She has a sort of sister named River, but she’s already a grown-up.

Most of my friends are already in junior high or high school. Only me, Sandi, and Johnny Keaton are still in elementary school. Skip and Cora are in 7th grade, Bella and Darlene are in the 8th grade, and Arlo is all the way in 10th grade! I wish I was older sometimes. They can stay up really late and do anything they want.

Bella is really pretty. I like her a lot. Don't tell anyone though!

I think that’s all for today. Do I have to write every day? I have to go to school tomorrow.

Sincerely,

Sammy

Dear Journal,

School was good today. We had a math quiz and I think I did okay. Miss Hart also read a book to us today. I forgot what it was called. She is a very nice teacher, just as nice as Miss Alto. I wonder if they are friends?

I saw Bella walking after school. She smiled at me and said “Hi.”

“Reading your grandson’s diary?”

The sound of her daughter-in-law’s voice startled Yumi, causing her to jump.

“Good heavens, child…never sneak up on an old person like that! I could have had a heart attack, you know!” Yumi straightened herself in her chair and closed the book. “I was…merely observing his writing skills.”

Morgana stood in the doorway, her arms folded, with a smirk on her face. “You were snooping, admit it.”

“Hmph,” Yumi huffed. “He’s too young to be writing anything terribly interesting anyway. I need to wait a few years.”

“Yumi!”

“You would be interested to know that he has a crush on the Bachelor girl.”

“You’re awful, you know that?”

“You still love me.”

Morgana shook her head, laughing. “You’d better put that back before Sam gets back from his art class.”

“Oh don’t worry, I know how this works. I even remembered which side it was facing so I can put it back exactly how I found it.”

“Something tells me that you’re quite experienced in this…”

Yumi smirked, but said nothing more.
