Second Chances - Chapter 3: Coffee and Sympathy
« Reply #30 on: April 10, 2013, 11:16:00 PM »
(Just to warn you--this is a very long chapter. I couldn't really find a place to split it. :P)

Chapter 3 – Coffee and Sympathy

Morgana existed as best she could over the weekend. Despite numerous attempts by her friends to get her out and socialize, her heart really wasn't in it. All of Saturday and most of Sunday were spent with her nose in her medical textbooks studying for the next set of exams. Her burgeoning medical career was the one bit of normalcy she had left, and she very much looked forward to going back to work on Monday morning.

But normal, as Morgana was beginning to understand, was a relative thing in the medical field. Little did she realize that things were going to be a bit different this week, and it was all because of one small patient with big brown eyes.

Morgana went to the hospital twenty minutes early that morning and was immediately cornered by her boss. “Ahhh, just the nurse I wanted to see. Just a heads-up, you have a new patient on your floor.” Geoffrey handed her a manila folder. “He was just admitted an hour ago. Four-year-old with a critical respiratory infection. I've got the patient on full oxygen and heavy antibiotics, but you'll want to keep a very close eye on him.”

While it had been engrained in Morgana's mind from day one that she needed to detach herself emotionally from the people whom she treated, this particular patient made doing so rather difficult. Seeing something so heart-wrenching as a small boy tangled in a nest of tubes and wires was not something that she could easily brush aside. The child was fast asleep when she entered the room that morning, and nearby sat a worried looking young man whom she only assumed was his father.

“Good morning,” he whispered.

“Greetings,” Morgana whispered back. “My name is Morgana Wolff, I will be Sam's day nurse for the week.”

“Leighton Sekemoto, pleased to meet you.”

As she set about checking the boy's vital signs he began to stir, and soon there were a pair of big brown eyes staring at her, looking very confused. She gave him a friendly smile and lightly waved.

“Sam, this is Nurse Wolff. She is going to help you feel better, okay?” Leighton assured him.

The boy looked skeptical. “You have a pointy thing?”

Morgana shook her head. “No Sam, I don't have any needles. I'm here to help you breathe better.”

“That's what meanie doctor said,” Sam replied with a pout.

Morgana had to laugh. “I promise. I have no needles. I'm here to check on you and take your temperature. Is that okay?”

At that moment Sam started coughing, and right away Morgana knew that it was the right thing for Doctor Landgraab to admit him; just from the sounds of it the infection was quite nasty and could easily turn into pneumonia if they weren't careful. Once the coughing fit finally subsided she helped Sam to lay back down.

“Owie...I don't feel good, Daddy.” Sam whimpered. Leighton looked up at Morgana with concerned eyes.

“Don't worry, Mr. Sekemoto. We will take good care of him.”

She finished her duties and waved goodbye to her young charge, then went about the rest of her rounds. Try as she did, though, she could not get her mind off of that little boy and his worried father. For the next two days, like clockwork, she would enter little Sam's room to check on his vital signs...and every morning and afternoon, like clockwork, his father was there with him. Sometimes he would ask questions, sometimes he would make light conversation, but he was always there with Sam.

It brought a smile to Morgana's face whenever she thought about it. He was dedicated to his son above all else. She had to admire that.

On Thursday morning she was rather surprised to see an entirely different person in the room.

Sam's grandmother perhaps? Morgana wasn't sure, but she politely introduced herself and put on her best smile. The woman said nothing, offering instead a curt nod. Morgana couldn't quite put her finger on it, but there was something oddly unsettling about her gaze; it felt as if the woman was scrutinizing every last inch of her. She did the best that she could to ignore it and set about her work.

Sam opened his eyes and looked at her, smiling when he recognized her face. “Nurse Wuff!”

“Hi there, sweetie. How are you feeling today?”

“Still kinda yucky.”

At that moment the door opened and Leighton walked in. He looked positively haggard, but smiled when he noticed that Sam was awake.

“Daddy!”

Leighton went over to the bed and cuddled his son as best as he could without dislodging his IV, then looked straight at Morgana. “How is he doing?”

“His numbers are looking a lot better,” she answered. “The fever is down to much more manageable levels, and I'm happy to say that his pulse oxygen is back up to near 100%. He's not quite out of the woods yet, but Sam is definitely on his way.”

He was visibly relieved at the news, then glanced over at the elderly lady. “By the way, this is my mother Yumi. I...well, slept in a bit later than I wanted to and she came in to sit with Sam for a while.”

Yumi smirked and uttered something that Morgana didn't quite hear. Her voice was very quiet, but it sounded like she was speaking in another language entirely. Whatever it was that she said was enough to make her son's eyes widen in horror.

Okaa-san...yamete...” Leighton stammered.

“Am I wrong?” Yumi replied.

Leighton glanced at Morgana then back at his mother, the slightest hint of a blush flowering on both cheeks. “That isn't important.”

“Hmph.” Yumi rolled her eyes and went back to reading her book. Morgana still had no idea what Yumi had said, and judging from her son's reaction she was pretty sure that she didn't want to know. She tried not to think about it too much as she continued her work. Ah well, you can't please everyone, Morgana finally concluded.

The next morning came with much eager anticipation. It was Friday, which meant payday, and a new paycheck meant that Morgana could finally put down the deposit on the apartment that she wanted. As soon as she checked her bank account she called the apartment complex...

...and was instantly thrown for a loop.

“No availability? But I called last Friday and there were still two units left!”

“I'm sorry, Ms. Wolff. The larger unit was leased on Tuesday and someone put down a deposit on the smaller unit just last night.” Morgana heard the sound of shuffling paper. “The tenant in unit 16 just gave his notice, so that apartment will be available in four weeks.”

“What's the rent on that one?”

“§650 plus utilities. It's a two-bedroom, two bath with a balcony.”

Morgana winced. That was too much. “I'm afraid that won't work. Is there anything smaller that might be opening up soon?”

More shuffling. “I'm afraid not, Ms. Wolff. All of the one-bedroom units are leased past the beginning of June.”

“Thank you anyway. I appreciate your help.”

“My pleasure. Again, I am sorry that we couldn't find something to accommodate you. Best of luck.”

“Thanks.”

The news sent Morgana into a near-panic. Now what was she going to do? The only other apartment complex in town was in a not-so-nice area. Maybe she could look on Simslist and see if someone was looking for a roommate? What if she couldn't find a place? She didn't have much time to contemplate it, at any rate. Her shift started in less than an hour and the last thing she wanted to do was be late. At the very least work would distract her for a while.

As usual her morning rounds brought her to Sam Sekemoto's room. Today, however, his father was less than animated. He gave her a sort of half smile, but said nothing as Morgana checked Sam's vital signs. The toddler was fast asleep, and from the looks of it Leighton wasn't too far behind.

“Mr. Sekemoto, forgive me if I'm being too forward, but you look absolutely exhausted.”

Leighton yawned. “I am. I don't think I've gotten more than three hours of sleep each night since Sam was admitted.”

Morgana's heart went out to him. She couldn't possibly imagine what he must be going through. Although her main concern was for his son, at the very least she could offer a listening ear. “Well...I'm just about to go on break,” she began. “Would you care for a cup of cheap coffee from the cafeteria? My treat.”

Leighton sighed. “I suppose I could give myself a break for a moment, especially since Sam is asleep. Sure.”

Ten minutes later the two of them had gotten their coffees and sat down at one of the empty tables. The cafeteria was surprisingly deserted for this time of day, something that Morgana rather enjoyed. She looked over at her companion. He looked to be in his mid-twenties, perhaps a touch younger. Slim, but muscular. It was obvious that he made a habit of working out. Leighton was actually a very handsome man, now that Morgana really thought about it.

She wasn't about to go there.

“The coffee isn't too bad,” he spoke up.

“It's no Simbucks, but it gets the job done,” Morgana replied. “From the sounds of it you could use the caffeine boost.”

“I suppose you could say that. It's going to be challenging enough just to make it through work this afternoon.”

“Where do you work?”

“The stadium,” Leighton replied in between sips. “I'm one of the little league coaches.”

Somehow Morgana was not surprised. “It must be a blast working with all of those children.”

“You know it!” He laughed. “Some of them are high-maintenance, but most of them are just a joy to be around and teach. I tried to get Sam involved, but he seems more at home with his finger paints than a baseball.” His expression became sullen. “It doesn't pay terribly well, though. Not nearly enough to give Sam the life he deserves. With any luck this year's team tryouts will go my way and I'll finally make it into the minor leagues.” He shook his head. “You know it's bad when your own mother moves in to help pay expenses.”

His words brought back Morgana's own financial worries and she sighed uncomfortably. “I know the feeling. I'm still trying to find an apartment. On my salary, not exactly the easiest thing to do.”

“Yeah, I hear you. It stinks have to go at it alone.”

Silently Morgana wondered why Sam's mother was not in the picture, but she didn't wish to pry.

“I'm optimistic that things will work out though, once we can get past this setback,” Leighton continued. “Right now my focus is on Sam, making sure he pulls through this. He's my life.”

Morgana smiled. “You can be assured of one thing. He is under the best care that Sunset Valley has to offer. Doctor Landgraab is a fantastic doctor.”

“He certainly seems like it.”

Morgana glanced up at the wall clock and was shocked to see the time. Her next class started in five minutes. “Oops, I guess I should have been checking the time a little bit closer,” she stated as she hastily stood from her chair. “I have to get going. Doctor Morita will never let me hear the end of it if I'm late to his lecture. I'm glad we got the chance to talk, though.”

“Me too,” Leighton replied. “Thank you for letting me vent. You can imagine with a small child and a full-time job I don't get much of a chance to socialize.”

“Any time, Mr. Sekemoto.”

“Hey, just call me Leighton. Mr. Sekemoto sounds just so...formal.”

“All right, but only if you call me Morgana.”

“I think I can manage that,” he replied with a grin.

Morgana only barely managed to make it to her class on time, but her mind was about as far away from Histology as it could possibly be. Her conversation with Leighton had reminded her that she still had no place to live, and the clock was ticking. To add to the distraction, somewhere in the middle of Doctor Morita's lecture on liver cells she felt her cell phone vibrate. Morgana ignored it at first, but then felt it vibrate again. She discreetly pulled the phone from her pocket and checked her messages.

Checking to see how you are doing. Haven't chatted in a while. Then a second message: Though I imagine you're probably in class right now. Sorry.

She smiled inwardly. Her self-proclaimed “big brother” had a terrible knack for poor timing. In this instance, though, Morgana welcomed the distraction. She thought for a moment, then texted him back.

Meet me at lunch? Need advice.

The response was almost immediate. Name the place, I'll be there.

Bistro.

See you at 12:15.

Morgana concentrated as best as she could manage for the rest of the lecture, though it wasn't exactly easy. Noon couldn't possibly have come quickly enough. As soon as Doctor Morita finished Morgana was out of the door and on her way to the lobby...but before she could leave she was stopped by a very familiar voice.

“Nurse Wuff!”

She turned around to see little Sam Sekemoto running toward her at full speed, his father a short distance behind him.

“Nurse Wuff! I can go home!”

Morgana smiled as the child leaped into her arms “That is very good news, Sam! I'm so glad that you are feeling better now.”

“Me too! And Daddy said I can have French toast for lunch!” He cheered.

“Mmm, that sounds yummy!" She gently set Sam back on the floor and glanced up at Leighton, who was looking more than a little bit relieved. “It looks like you will finally be able to get some sleep tonight.”

“I certainly hope so,” he replied. “Thank you for everything, Morgana. I really appreciate it.”

“You are most welcome. Take care, all right? And best of luck with the coming tryouts.”

Leighton smiled. “Thanks.”

Morgana watched as father and son walked hand-in-hand out the front door. As ill as Sam was when he was first admitted it was a relief to see him well again. At the same time, though, Morgana knew she was going to miss him. The both of them, actually.

By the time Morgana finally made it to the Bistro her lab-coated friend was already there. Gobias was one of the first people she met when she moved to Sunset Valley just over three years ago. In many ways he reminded her of her brother, something that Gobias instantly latched onto, and ever since he had considered her to be his surrogate “little sis”.

And this was one of those times when she definitely needed her big brother.

The two of them purchased their meals and sat outside, where Morgana began pouring her heart out to her friend. She told him everything—her failure to get into the paramedic program, her problems finding an apartment. All of the pent-up emotions that she had been holding in for the past week came gushing out. By the time Gobias had finished his meal Morgana was less than halfway done with hers.

She quickly discovered that goopy carbonara tasted terrible at room temperature and put down her fork, sighing deeply.

“You needed to vent, didn't you?” Gobias asked.

“Yeah...I suppose I did.” Morgana sighed. “I'm sorry that I vented at you.”

“I don't mind, but Morgana, why didn't you call me? You know I have plenty of room.” Gobias looked genuinely hurt. “Even my couch is more comfortable than a motel bed, you have to admit.”

“I would never wish to impose on you...or anyone.”

“You? An imposition? I doubt that is even possible.” He looked at her with puppy-dog eyes. “So what do you say? Roommates for a while? Pretty please with cherries on top? Or if you don't like cherries, maybe some walnuts and a spritz of whipped cream?”

Morgana let herself laugh. “Are you absolutely sure?”

Gobias cast her a sideways glance. “If I wasn't would I be making a fool of myself like this? Besides, I can't just leave my sister hanging. You can stay as long as you need to get back on your feet...and I'm not about to take no for an answer.”

“Oh all right! Yes. I'll check out of the motel as soon as I get off shift.”

“Good. See you in a few hours, then. Now I'd better get going before Susan makes me clean the rat cages again.”

Morgana laughed. "I'll see you soon."

Morgana walked up to Gobias's house early that evening, suitcases in hand and a smile on her face. This was a port in a storm, a transition point on her way to a brand new life. This last week, if nothing else, had given her a new sense of perspective. Even though her marriage had been torn in half, she had a good job and amazing friends, both old and new.

She smiled when she thought of Leighton and his adorable son. Now that Sam was on the mend they could finally move on with their lives.

Who knows...maybe one day they would meet again.

(A/N: The words that Leighton said to his mother are Japanese. Literally translated, he said “Mother, stop.” Kind of makes you wonder what it was that she said...? Hmmm... ;) Thanks so much for reading!)

Little Sam is adorable! I'm glad that he is so well. 'Nurse Wuff!' I never expected Gobias to be NerdDude but I'm glad Morgana has found a place to stay. Can't wait for more!

I think Yumi Sekemoto was matchmaking.  Apparently most mothers of unattached men do it (or so my son informs me).  ::)  Nice to see Gobias cast in a support role.  He gets too much bad press.

I'm with Yumi on this one--Leighton needs to nab the nurse while he has a chance! Sam was such a cutie in this chapter, I hope he comes back in more!

Nee~ Morgana nee-san, you should learn Japanese to understand Leighton more  ::)
I have a hunch that Leighton maybe... Ah, probably not.

I love how you include Gobby in this story. I always delighted when I see Resident that I know.
Thank you for not making fun of him ;D

And I will love if I can see more of Resident of Sunset Valley in this story.

As always Raia, your story was beautifully written and so realistic!
Take your time. It's really worth to wait the next chapters ;D

You've already got me hooked. And just so you know, even if I didn't understand the Japaneese, I already knew what Leighton said, because it's what we all say to our mothers sometimes ::)

Gobias makes perfect sense as nerddude - even if I'd never guess it. I've never played him much so I'm really looking forward to your take on him.

I have always loved Sam. He has to be up there with my favorite of the original SV townies. :) Thanks so much!

<whistles innocently> Who, Yumi? Noooo, she would never do that. :P I do plan on revealing what it was that she said at some point...but it will probably be a few chapters on.

Gobias has always struck me as an interesting character. Being a science geek (and a bit childish) myself I can certainly appreciate his quirkier side. All he needs is a little love. :)

I'm with Yumi on this one--Leighton needs to nab the nurse while he has a chance! Sam was such a cutie in this chapter, I hope he comes back in more!

Sam will most definitely be back. ;)

Since Gobias is acquainted with the Wolff family at the beginning of the game it gave me the perfect excuse to include him. He is quite fun to play, though I do feel sorry for him sometimes with that Loser trait. No need to worry about him though--I have big plans for my favorite geeky scientist. ;)

And thank you. I am so glad that you are enjoying this!

You've already got me hooked. And just so you know, even if I didn't understand the Japaneese, I already knew what Leighton said, because it's what we all say to our mothers sometimes ::)

Yeah, I can't tell you how many times I've said something similar to my own mother. :P With her Inappropriate trait it would seem that Yumi would be more meddlesome than most, but I haven't quite explored her writing-wise just yet.

All I will say about Gobias is that he is a blast to write...and he too will have his day in the sun. Eventually. :)

My deepest apologies for the delay! I've been fighting a case of writer's block...rather, a case of writer's pickiness. Most of the chapter is complete, but I'm a bit stuck on a few of the scene transitions and a bit of dialogue near the end. Of course, it also doesn't help that I decided I needed to create a new venue for the second half of the chapter.

An update is coming, hopefully within the next couple of days. So long as I can get my brain to start working again, that is. :P

Second Chances - Chapter 4: Serendipity
« Reply #41 on: April 20, 2013, 04:35:15 PM »
Argh, that was more difficult than I thought. :o Thanks so much for your patience!

---

Chapter 4 – Serendipity

Four months had passed since the day Morgana and Thornton had parted ways. Once the divorce was finalized six weeks later it felt as if a giant weight had been lifted from her shoulders. Their sham of a marriage was officially over, and she could finally move on with her life.

As always her work and her medical degree were her first priorities. Morgana studied tirelessly to make sure that she was able to keep up, and just a few days ago she got the news that she had been waiting for: her application to join the paramedic program had been approved.

Things were starting to finally look up.

Not to say that the last few months had been entirely without incident. A few of the nurses and interns at the hospital had taken it upon themselves to throw a surprise baby shower for Jamie. Finding a discreet way to distance herself from that had been quite the challenge, and ultimately Morgana had to feign illness in order to avoid attending the event. Things were still understandably tense between the two of them, though in all reality Morgana had more or less forgiven her for what happened. In many ways Jamie had done her a favor by helping to reveal Thornton's true colors. Still though, she couldn't exactly bring herself to celebrate the impending birth of his child.

Morgana did, however, send a card with her best wishes.

Thanks to Gobias's generous offer to let her stay with him she was able to save most of her paycheck with the goal of putting a down payment on a house sometime in the near future. It was slow going to be sure, but coupled with what she got from selling her wedding ring she calculated that she would have enough by the beginning of Fall. Until then, Morgana was perfectly content to be where she was—and eternally grateful that she had such an amazing friend.

Even if he was a little bit...peculiar.

Gobias was a nice enough man, very well-meaning, but had the worst losing streak known to simanity, it seemed. Just in the past year he had come close to being fired from his job twice, both for seemingly innocent mistakes. Every other afternoon he would come home with some sort of minor injury, whether from a broken piece of equipment or being used as a chew toy by one of the lab rats. Then there was the time he came home with glowing yellow skin from a jellybean experiment gone wrong...

Fortunately it went away on its own after a couple of days.

Morgana always wondered why Gobias never married. From what she had heard he was quite the flirt back when he was younger, but years of rejection, it seemed, had taken its toll on him. Now he hardly ever left the house except for running errands, work, and the rare occasions that one of his co-workers would throw a barbeque. It wasn't as if he had lost interest in finding someone. He had even given online dating a try for a while, but wound up with a bad taste in his mouth when the lady he was chatting with turned out to be a scam artist...and so did the next one...and the one after that. Gobias never quite let on about it, but Morgana knew deep down that he was a very lonely man.

That was why, when Pauline invited her out to the dance club to help celebrate her new promotion, she took it as the perfect opportunity to try and coax him out of his shell.

It wasn't exactly an easy task.

Me? You want me to come with you?”

“Of course. I never would have asked if I didn't want you to come.”

“But I...I don't dance.”

“You don't have to dance,” Morgana explained. “Pauline was saying that they have a hot tub and a pool table. Believe me, if anyone knows a good place to have fun, it's her.”

“I don't know...clubs aren't exactly my thing.” Gobias replied, looking down at his feet nervously. “Maybe they were when I was a bit younger and had more hair, but now?”

“She also mentioned that they have a full arcade upstairs.”

That seemed to pique his interest. “Really? I ah...guess then that I wouldn't mind tagging along. When are we leaving?”

“Pauline wanted to meet at six. Does that work?”

“Yeah. Just let me hop in the shower quick and get this cowplant saliva off of me...”

The Iron Rose had only been open for a few weeks, so it came as no surprise that the place was rather busy when Morgana and Gobias arrived. Morgana could sense the nervousness in her companion and patted him on the shoulder. “Relax. Just try to have fun.”

Gobias swallowed hard. “All right. I'll...uh...be upstairs if you need me. I hope they have Battle Tanks.”

Morgana scanned the room for Pauline and found her almost immediately, chatting at the bar with the bartender and a blonde lady whom she didn't recognize.

“Hey, girl!” Pauline greeted her with a hug. “Long time no see. You really ought to get out more often, y'know?”

“I'm not even so sure I should be out tonight, not with another set of exams on the horizon and my paramedic training starting next week.”

“All the more reason why you need to be here. Give yourself a chance to relax before hitting the books again.” She gestured at her blonde companion. “This is Zelda, one of the new roadies. She's only been in the Valley for a couple of months so I thought I'd show her around town. Zel, this is Morgana—and she's the reason we're out celebrating tonight. Not like I ever need an excuse to go out and party, but hey, getting a promotion is pretty awesome.”

“Welcome to town!” Morgana cheered. “I would introduce you to my roommate, but he sort of...disappeared.”

“Oh yeah, I forgot you were living with Gobias,” Pauline remarked. “How's that working out?”

“Not bad at all, actually. He's one of the sweetest guys I've ever known, if not a little on the awkward side. It was a challenge even getting him out of the house.”

“You're still looking for a place though, right?”

“Yeah. As much as I like having 24/7 access to a swimming pool, sleeping on the couch is just tearing up my back.” Morgana replied. “I've been eying a couple of places on Water Lily Lane and one on Sim Lane. It's just a point of what will be available once I save up enough for a down payment.”

“Nice—oh hey! This is my favorite song! I don't know about you guys, but I'm headed to the dance floor.”

Pauline tipped the bartender and the three of them headed off into the throng of dancers. About halfway to the dance floor Pauline suddenly stopped short. “Uh-oh, ex-alert...” She gestured over to the far corner of the room, where Morgana saw none other than Thornton dancing with a woman whom she didn't recognize.

“Who's that?” Zelda asked.

“My ex-husband,” Morgana grumbled. “He's about the last person I want to see at this point.”

“Yeah, I know the feeling. Let's just say there's a reason why I moved to Sunset Valley.” Zelda shook her head. “Six years and he dumps me for his secretary. What a jerk.”

“We didn't even make it to three. He got one of my co-workers pregnant.”

“Ouch, really?”

“Yeah.” Morgana bit her lip uneasily. She didn't think that seeing Thornton would bother her as much as it did, but the idea that he was just a short distance away made her rather uncomfortable. “I think I'll head upstairs for a while...just to make sure I don't accidentally run into him.”

“Totally understandable,” Pauline assured her. “I'll come get you when I see him leave.”

“Thanks.”

“Don't they have an arcade upstairs?” Zelda asked. “I might just join you. I wonder if they have Battle Tanks...that one's my favorite!”

Casting one last glance at her former husband Morgana left Pauline behind and made her way toward the stairs, Zelda close behind her. The upper floor was decidedly less crowded and much quieter, save the symphony of electronic beeps from the arcade. Almost immediately Zelda disappeared into the maze of video game machines, leaving Morgana standing alone...and wondering if it had been a mistake for her to accept the invitation out.

Morgana sat down on one of the nearby loungers, sighing deeply. Suddenly the idea of dancing the night away no longer appealed to her. Briefly she considered finding Gobias and letting him know she was heading back home, but then he might feel obligated to leave and the last thing she wanted to do was keep him from having a good time.

Her train of thought was interrupted by the sound of a familiar voice. “Morgana? Is that you?”

She looked up and saw the friendly eyes of someone whom she hadn't seen in months.

“Leighton! Hi!”

“Imagine meeting you here,” Leighton spoke as he pulled her into a friendly hug. “How have you been?”

“Doing all right, all things considered,” Morgana replied. “How's Sam doing?”

“Fantastic. You wouldn't believe how much he's grown just in the last couple of months. He still talks about you, by the way.”

“Aww. Sam is such a sweet kid.”

“That he is.” He paused. “So...are you here with anyone?”

“A few friends. I lost two of them to the arcades and the other one is still dancing downstairs. Normally I'd be down there with her, but...” Morgana's voice trailed off. “I...just don't feel much like dancing right now, I guess.”

“Want to join me, then? The rest of my teammates seem to have disappeared.”

“Sure, I'll play one. I'm not terribly good, though.”

Leighton flashed her a smile. “Then you're in good company. Neither am I.”

One game turned into two and then three as the pair chatted and laughed. They talked about anything and everything, life, their jobs, their hopes for the future. Morgana was thrilled to discover that Leighton had made the minor league team, and Leighton offered his congratulations when she told him about her acceptance into the paramedic program. “You really should volunteer to work some of the games,” he suggested. “They're a lot of fun, plus the paramedics have on-field access so you get to see the game up-close and personal.”

Morgana had never thought about that before. Mixing work and play sounded like a great idea. Especially if there's a bit of eye-candy involved, she thought. Wait, did I really just think that?

The conversation took a decidedly somber turn as Morgana racked up the pool balls for their third game. She wasn't entirely sure how the subject came up, but they wound up talking about past relationships. Leighton was very sympathetic when she revealed what had happened between her and Thornton. “It isn't right,” he sighed, shaking his head. “No one deserves that, least of all someone as nice as you.”

As it turned out he had had his share of bad relationships. One thing Morgana noticed, though, was that Leighton said nothing about Sam's mother. Whatever the story was, she suspected it was painful, and she respected his silence.

Soon enough the conversation drifted back to more pleasant matters. Morgana laughed as Leighton told her about some of Sam's crazy antics growing up. From the sounds of it the boy was quite a handful, active and on the go from the moment he woke up to the moment he went to bed. “It's crazy, but more than worth it,” Leighton said as he set up his final shot. “Eight ball, corner pocket.”

By the time their final game drew to a close it was already after ten. Had they really been playing for over three hours?

“Wow, I should probably get going,” Leighton sighed as he placed his cue back on the rack. “I promised Sam that I'd read a story for him tonight and it's already past his bedtime.”

“He's lucky to have a father like you."

Leighton blushed. “I try my best. He is my world.”

The silence afterward felt terribly awkward.

“You know, it was nice seeing you again,” he finally continued. “If...ah...you wouldn't mind, I would like to take you to lunch sometime. If that's all right, of course.”

Morgana didn't hesitate. “I wouldn't mind at all.”

They exchanged phone numbers, all the while Morgana's heart was racing. She felt his hand brush against hers as he handed her the slip of paper. “Talk to you later?”

“Definitely. Say hi to Sam for me.”

“I will. Good night, Morgana.”

“Good night.”

She watched as Leighton walked away, the smile refusing to leave her lips.

“Man, it's getting way too cramped down there for my taste,” came Pauline's voice as she made her way to the pool area. “Who was the guy you were chatting with? He's pretty cute.”

“His name is Leighton. His son was one of my patients a few months back...” Morgana looked down at the piece of paper in her hand. “...and I think he just asked me out on a date.”

“No kidding? Sweet!” Pauline cheered. “Hey, Thornton's still dancing down there, and my feet hurt. Want to go grab dessert somewhere? I'm totally craving a chocolate milkshake.”

“Sounds good to me. Have you talked to Gobi or Zelda yet?”

“Not yet. They're still in the arcade, right?”

“I think so.”

They made their way through the maze of machines and found Gobias and Zelda playing on one of the tabletop arcades. The two of them were quite literally enthralled in the gameplay and were both completely oblivious to the fact that Morgana and Pauline were now standing over them.

“Yes! Got the power up,” Zelda cheered. “You're toast, dude!”

“I still have full shields. Good luck getting past—aw, rats!” Gobias punched at one of the keys. “Stupid spikes.”

Morgana and Pauline just kind of looked at each other, both of them grinning. “Hey, we're going to head to the Diner for dessert,” Pauline finally spoke up. “Want to join?”

“Hang on a sec—I'm winning!”

At that moment Morgana felt her cell phone vibrate and knew who it was without even looking. She plucked the phone from her purse and glanced at the text message:

Sam says hi back. :)

Morgana sighed softly. She had no idea where this was going and didn't dare to speculate, but one thing was for certain: she couldn't wait to see Leighton again.

Yay! I'm so glad everything is working out!  I wonder what happened to Sam's mother? Really great story by the way.
