What do you mean?

Simstar, I know you said these parents live together, but are they actually married?  In my game where this happened, the parents weren't married, so I'm wondering if that is a factor.
Yes, they're married.

I've seen this interaction many times in families.  Sometimes it's kids asking parents to break up, sometimes it's siblings.  There's no particular reason for it to come up.  Nothing bad has happened (i.e. cheating or acting out).  It's not related to traits.  It's just an odd little thing that appears after a certain point sometimes.  I guess it gives the player a chance to insert some drama into the family.

I have this with a daughter in one of my families too, but I thought it was only because she has the inappropraite trait. It's interesting to see that it's not related to traits!

Has anyone used it to see what happens? I didn't want to try it because I didn't want to risk breaking up the couple!

I tried it.  The parents immediately broke up.  The mother, who was the only one under my control, cried for days.  Not my brightest move.

I didn't try it. They're married happily, and have 2 kids, so I want them to stay together 'till death do they part.

Well, locking them in a room with no exit is one way of going about it...  ???

It pretty much ensures that they'll be together until they die. No?

Or it can ensure they'll strangle each other from being cooped up together 24 hours a day.  :D
