Game Freezes When Saving

I have a long save going, with 7 sims in my house, and no major problems so far, but one day I went to save after an hour or so of gameplay and it just sits in the saving screen forever with the sims icon rotating. Now, every time I save game, whether save, save as or save and quit it always freezes and i have to end up closing with ctrl alt delete. How can I fix this? I've tried clearing cache and using the backup save, is my save corrupted and therefore I'm borked?

edit: forgot to mention I have all expansion packs except for university.

My longest save has been over 4 minutes. How long have you let the save process go before giving up on it?
