Three Little WordsThe day before his son's young adult birthday, at the age of one hundred, Asa decided it was finally time to concede defeat.
His wife had grown into a full fledged adult.
Their son was becoming a man tomorrow.
And Asa had still never heard those three little words every hopeless romantic longs to hear.
The three little words he'd promised himself he'd hear from her, ever since that day when he agreed to go along with her plan.
I'm going to make you love me some day, he had thought, but it seemed like he was running out of time to make that happen.
Despite the occasional hiccup, they'd been friends.
And even lovers.
He'd celebrated her successes with her.
And sometimes swept her off her feet.
It was time to set her free. So he told her how much he loved her.
And that it was okay to move on after he was gone, if she wanted.
Then later that night, he left.
Asa: "I love you, pet." he said. "Don't mourn too long."
That was when she finally said it: "Oh, Asa!" she sobbed. "
I love you, too."
So he died a happy man.
And their son aged up into a handsome young adult.
