WA or Ambitions?
« on: July 10, 2010, 06:18:07 PM »
Me and my friend are saving up for a new expansion pack to buy. We can get only one. Should we get WA or Amb.
I like realistic, and I can make my own adventures, so I'm leaning on Amb. But I really want laundry, and I heard that was only WA. What should I pick? Anyone have a good discription?
What are all the gains of each? (No personal recomendations please)

You heard wrong, laundry is Ambitions only. In World Adventures, it adds three new places to visit, France; Egypt; and China. Each has unique fruits and fish, and it even adds some valuable gems and rocks. The skills it adds are Photography, Nectar Making, and Martial Arts. In photography, you basically capture pictures which can be sold for money; some can be sold for a couple thousand simoleons. In nectar making, you take ten fruits and mash them all up and put them in a machine that makes it into a wine-type drink. You can mix and match fruits to make a valuable combination, which can then be stored in a basement to age, and the value goes up. A martial artist trains on wooden dummies and board breakers. You can challenge other martial artists and work your way up the ladder of respect, sort of like a chess player in the base game. At each location, you can take adventures, which are special opportunities to go into tombs and such to fetch a missing item for a local. You will then receive Visa points. The Visa points determine how long you can stay at a place. At Visa level 0, you stay at a place for 3 days with a single sim (each additional sim adds 3 days) As your Visa level reaches level 3, you can stay longer and longer.

In Ambitions, it adds new jobs: a firefighter, stylist/makeover person, a ghosthunter, a private investigator, and architectural designer. In each of these jobs, you are able to control your sim at work. In some professions, like the firefighter, designer, stylist, and ghost hunter, you are "on call" for a set number of hours. When you receive a job offer (or emergency) you go to a house and give a certain room a new look, give a sim a makeover, get rid of the ghosts, or even put out a fire. The private investigator has open ended work hours. People will call you for hire, or you can search for a job to do. Ambitions also adds the new skills inventing and sculpting. Inventors will need scrap to make something completely new while sculptors can make stuff out of clay, stone, ice, and grass. There is more stuff, and Carl's guide is a great place to look into the stuff in more detail. It will also outline just about everything there is to each game, though I'm not sure if Ambitions is finished yet. You should still check it out to really get an idea of which game to get.

Laundry came with Ambitions.  I guess it is just boils down to your own personal preference.  I like the WA for the adventures and I like Ambitions for the new professions.

maddy, if I had to pick one I'd go with World Adventures for a couple reasons — 1) it's not as buggy as Ambitions (though the recent patch should nullify that a bit), and 2) you would need to install WA before Ambitions anyway, so you might as well go in order.

Question.  So they have actually made it where you have to purchase all of these EP in order for them to work?  What if someone did not want WA, but Ambitions, they would still have to get WA?  I know you just said that Metro and I know with all of the patches and updates that come with each game that it would make sense, but I guess I just never really thought of it that way.  I didn't mean to stray off topic, but, I just wanted to clarify that.  I know in sims2, you could skip an EP, but you still had to install the EP after that one.

No, Salty, I was only referring to installation order. Someone who only has the base game would do fine with Ambitions and not WA. But, if they later do want to add WA, then that would require more work uninstallating, etc to do things in the proper order.

Just checking.  Didn't mean to ask such a stupid question, I guess it was just the way it sounded and not only this thread, there was another one that somone said you couldn't skip one.  No problem, thanks.

That's what I would do too. I greatly prefer Ambitions to World Adventures as I don't travel all that much. The only time I've been to Egypt was for the Perfectly Happy Challenge and then the only thing I did there was fish. The thing that bothers me about WA is once you complete a tomb for one sim, any other sim you take to that tomb on the same save game will already be considered "complete." That means that on my legacy families, if I take a sim in on of the earlier generations, then I get a sim with the Seasoned Traveler LTW in like the 8th generation, it won't be as fun or easy since some of the tombs have already been completely revealed.

I really do like Ambitions better but I've found out recently that I like WA more than I thought. I traveled a few times to check it out and get plants but in the last week I've really been exploring the tombs and find I really like the puzzles.

Sorry to be posting this way after the fact, but just wanted to add my input since I do have both expansions now :) So far, I like World Adventures a lot more than Ambitions. Ambitions is okay...but for the money paid I think WA is better. There is more to do and more exciting stuff going on...not just your normal game of sims. I do like ambitions for the new skills and self-employed options, but the careers I've tried out so far to me haven't been that interesting or exciting.

Also I wanted to add that I bought ambitions first and then WA and didn't have any trouble installing (no uninstalling required). Don't know if thats just because I have a mac but just thought I'd throw that out there :)

Well, have fun.  It is so exciting to get new games.  It seems like you play for hours just wanting to learn everything at once.  I like WA alot and really got into the adventures, in fact I played so hard and such long hours when I first got the game, I had to quit for a while, lol.  Then when Ambitions came along, I had to try all of the professions out as soon as possible.  I want everything yesterday.  I am really not sure which one to choose if I had to do it all over, but, if I had to, it would be WA.
