Chapter Thirteen: The Flock Returns To The Nest

The days passed…

When Blake returned home from school, it was in the middle of the night and everyone was asleep.

Blake Hardy – Second Child

Sign: Pieces
Traits: Loves the Outdoors, Vegetarian, Loves the Heat, Green Thumb, Evil
Favorites: Latin, Grilled Salmon, Lilac
LTW: Alchemy Artisan

No one greeted him. When he explored upstairs, he found everything rearranged with no extra bed for him. So he fell asleep in the rocker downstairs.

He woke to the sound of his mother typing in the parlor and went to greet her, but she scarcely noticed he was there… Is it too much to ask that you acknowledge I'm alive, Mother?

Never mind, thought Blake, my plans don't include her anyway.

Blake had gathered a large variety of skills at school and he really could have gone many directions when it came to a career. In the end, becoming a self-employed Angler seemed to be the best choice. It would bring in money, suit his traits, and give him flexibility with his time. His choices of LTW were all over the board, so he randomly chose Alchemy Artisan. A little bit of shopping to get him a sleeping bag, a Multi-Tablet, and some other outdoor odds and ends, and he headed off to register and get started.

The three of them kept to themselves, each cramming studying, working, and needs meeting at a steady clip. Bartholomew turned out to be something of a neat freak, which was very helpful and not something they had before. He became the family housekeeper. Until someone could pick up martial arts equipment at the consignment shop, he had only work to think about so he had the time.

Blake spent a lot of time camping at fishing holes and hanging out at the alchemy shop, not going home for days on end. His interest were so varied, he had trouble focusing on any one thing, but he quickly moved up the ladder in his job of Angler and had no trouble getting started with the alchemy.

Alex focused on chess, but managed to crank out a few books while waiting for opponents to show up.

Life went on routinely until the next child arrived home…

Brody Hardy – Third Child

Sign: Leo
Traits: Brave, Supernatural Fan, Disciplined, Evil, Friendly
Favorites: Country, Spaghetti, White
LTW: Physical Perfection

The family was up and waiting to greet him.

Brody had decided to pursue a professional sports career and signed up right away. They were going to be short of rooms when all the kids got home, so Brody and Bartholomew decided to bunk together - a new bed was moved in and a little rearranging done.

For the next few days everyone went about their business routinely. Alex received an inheritance (LTR) and bought the Stone Troll Fishing Hole as her investment property since Blake liked it so much.

Chapter Fourteen: A Dream Of The Past

Another full moon came to pass… The boys had all returned home for the evening from their respective jobs and gone to bed hours before, but Alex could never sleep on full moons. She was writing in the parlor, as usual, when she suddenly sensed something wasn't right… Something upstairs…

She was on her way to check when…

Her heart beat frantically in her chest - It was her Gladsten! Her darling Gladsten! She didn't know how or why, but he was here. He took her in his arms and they danced like they used to.

Had Alex fallen asleep at the keyboard? Was this a dream? She didn't care… He was here and they were dancing. In the distance, she could hear the wailing of the zombies outside the windows… She felt happy for the first time in ages.

He kissed her…

…and then he was gone.

Chapter Fifteen: A Fresh Start

Alex woke up the next morning refreshed and in a new state of mind. She hadn't intended to travel in her lifetime, but it was becoming necessary to take the family to China. The boys needed martial arts equipment (which was not showing up at the consignment shop), Blake could use the fish for challenges, and everyone could use a little extra skill-up time. If they were going to go, it would be best to do it before Bridgid came home, which would be soon. So one of them got the extended stay LTR and they went to China for six days.

They boys spent the time skilling-up/fishing.

Alex had the joy of being matched against Brody in a chess tournament at some point (and she whipped his ass).

It was while they were there that Alex hit her LTW. If she knew this guy would be the winning match, she would have gotten dressed for it. As it was, they chatted for a while and when Alex returned home, she resolved to invite him to visit since they hit it off so well.

Alex couldn't paint or write in China, so once the LTW was settled, her time was freed up to hunt for collectibles to try and pay for the trip.

She even dabbled in tomb hunting.

By the time they returned home, they had all made progress and Alex had picked up some tents and equipment for future use. It took a day to get everyone settled back into their routines. Blake was able to stock the pond with koi and much money was made from the gathered collectibles after a run to the alchemy shop.

Alex used the excuse of Bridgid's impending arrival to finish the kitchen.

And while Blake knew he would have to give up the room to Bridgid when she got home, he bought himself an alchemy table and took over the old nursery. Trying to use the one at the alchemy shop was not working so well.

His new man-cave barely lasted a day - Bridgid arrived home the next evening.

SECOND GENERATION - BRIDGID HARDY

Chapter Sixteen: The Heiress Apparent Returns

Bridgid Hardy – Fourth Child (Heir)

Sign: Cancer
Traits: Good, Daredevil, Charismatic, Snob, Friendly
Favorites: Songwriter, Firecracker Shrimp, Spiceberry
LTW: World Renowned Surgeon

Bridgid was excited. After most of her life spent at boarding school, she was returning home. It was late when her cab pulled up to Elderbough House, but she was thrilled to see that her mother was out on the lawn, painting, and her brothers were all still up to greet her. The boys all ran out to hug her - except Blake, who hung back inside. He was always a bit of an outsider, so it wasn't a surprise.

Bridgid had gone to a different school than her brothers so she had barely seen them in the past few years. She couldn't wait to reconnect with them and chat but she was exhausted from her trip and had to get some sleep first. She broke away from their chatter reluctantly. As she headed to the old nursery (soon to be her room), she stopped into her parent’s room for a moment. There was one person who had not been waiting up for her… Her beloved father.

She slipped into bed, thinking about the day to come. Her parents had hoped she would start a medical career and become a World Renowned Surgeon and she really had no reason not to pursue that path. So tomorrow she would sign up and get to work.

She would also get to work setting up her bedroom. Blake had taken it over for the time being, but now that she was back they would need to find a place for him. It wouldn't work to move him in with Bartholomew and Brody, they were just too different and it was already snug in there. Until something could be worked out, Blake pitched camp in the back yard by the abandoned orchard in the deluxe tent they had picked up in China on a recent trip. From what her brothers had said, he wasn't home a whole lot anyway and preferred being outside, so she didn’t feel too guilty about it.

The next morning, Bridgid headed out to sign up for work and found a present in the driveway. Her family had never owned a car, but as a graduation present they had bought her one!

She didn't have a lot of hope that she would get to use it much - With four others in the house, it was likely to be in hot demand. Still, she considered it hers.

The next few days were busy for the whole household.  Mom was in the parlor writing a lot, but she was also planning to paint a portrait of each of her children and had devoted much of the week to completing the project.

As she painted Bridgid, they talked woman to woman. She could see that her mother was a little baffled at the person that had come back to her from the expensive school she had sent her off to… It's true, Bridgid might have shown a little more discretion in dressing, but if you have it, why not show it? It wasn't her problem if people stared. And maybe she was a little bit snobby, but she had a brain and most people were idiots. Was she just supposed to suffer them? It had been a great education and she had great confidence in herself - If she was daring and outgoing, how was that a bad thing?

But they talked about more than that… They talked about her father, the house, and the ever important Legacy. Her mother was obsessed with all of it. Frankly, Bridgid couldn't quite see what the fuss was about, but she deeply respected her parents and felt a strong sense of duty toward them. And, by extension, to the house and bloodline. Her mother needn’t worry, she would do her part. She loved her large, crazy family and wanted one of her own. Spirits willing, there would be girls when the babies came to please her mother.

The following week was quite busy for all the boys, both at work and home. Bartholomew and Brody spent all their free time working out and practicing martial arts with each other. Blake was out most of the time fishing and camping. But on the nights they all happened to be home and in good spirits, they talked and played together.

Blake would hang out with her in her room playing with his alchemy station, which she had agreed to leave there for a little while - She was too busy getting started at work and exploring interests to decorate yet.

She was delighted they were all together. She knew Bartholomew and Brody intended to find women to marry and move out at some point and while she would rather keep them home, it was clear that once she started her own family they would not have the room for everyone. So she enjoyed being with her family while she could.

One night she half-woke up to a strange noise outside her window which she dismissed and went back to sleep. In the morning, Brody claimed he had been abducted by aliens. Man, her brothers were SO WEIRD.

On the way home from work one day, she bought into the local book store/spa as partner. As the oldest daughter, it was part of her duty to procure investment properties for the family. The family funds were doing quite well, but she still chose an inexpensive property. There would be all sorts of expenses coming soon and she didn't want to completely clean out the coffers.

Spooky Day arrived and the family received their very first trick-or-treat visitors!

Wouldn’t you know, it just happened to fall on a full moon…

Chapter Seventeen: The Parting Glass

Alex had spent the afternoon finishing the last of the family portraits and since the full moon was coming in a few hours and she was not tired yet, she settled in front of the computer for a night of writing (and trying not to think about Gladsten). All the children were in bed except Blake who was out for the night, fishing at some far off spot.

She wrote until exhaustion finally overtook her. When she rose to go to bed, something was not right…

It was time. Time to join her darling Gladsten.

She was glad, in a way, to go. But there was so much left undone! She had never seen the house properly finished. She had not achieved success in her career. She would never see her grandchildren. On the other hand, she had met all but one of her goals: Achieving her LTW, SuperMaxing a skill, investing in properties, gathering many LTR’s (143,975), painting her family portraits, producing an heir... It was a respectable start to a (hopefully) long Legacy.

RIP Alex. Dead at age 97.

Chapter Eighteen: The Next Generation

The next couple of days around the house were quiet and sad. All the kids were heartbroken at the loss of Alex.

Bridgid often took it upon herself to console the others.

The portrait Alex had finished the night of her death sat untouched in the dining room. Bridgid thought things through as she looked at it.

She would need to figure out where to lay Alex and Gladsten to rest. Alex had kept Gladsten close to her there at the house, but now that they were both gone, a more permanent site should be found. Bridgid decided she would purchase a piece of land across the field from the house and build a small church. They could start the family graveyard there.

Bridgid also gave some thought to her own life. Her father had lived to a surprisingly old age… Granted, he had been in peak physical condition, but that only made it that much more of a shock when Alex passed so much sooner than him. It really put fear in her heart. She did not want to make the same mistakes her mother had and wait to have kids, not to mention marry someone so much older than her. All of Bridgid’s other goals, no matter how important, would need to wait until after she started her family. She set out to meet someone in earnest. Signing up with a dating service was a logical first step.

Bartholomew was also thinking about his future and realized that he would have to return to China to complete his LTW, so he packed a bag and headed out. Since Brody also needed to increase his martial arts and physical skills and had enough LTRs to get the traveler reward, he went with him. Between the two of them they would have nine days to finish out their goals. Once there, they pitched camp at the Martial Arts School and focused on their training.

They also made an effort to meet a lot of girls. Bartholomew was especially interested in looking for wife-material as once he reached his LTW and returned home, he intended to marry and move out to a home of his own. He met several girls during his stay, but most turned out to be unavailable or crazy (seriously). Adaeze Min was the only candidate that rose to the top.

He met her during a tournament and they had good chemistry. She also was very athletic and liked to spar. By the end of his visit, they were very good friends and had been on several dates.

Unfortunately, due to unprecedented glitches in WA travel, Bartholomew was unable to participate in tournaments after the first one with Adaeze - The next ranking partner was stuck somewhere and would never come to matches no matter how many times I tried to reset him. Bartholomew was forced to give up the dream and returned home with a new plan to switch his LTW. Brody, on the other hand, was able to get within a hair of reaching his. It only took a few hours after returning home to complete it.

The trip to China had not been a total waste for Bartholomew. He called Adaeze right away when he got home and asked her to come to the States to be with him. She arrived as soon as a visa could be arranged.

It was only a matter of minutes before their first kiss.

Which skyrocketed up to a proposal in a few interactions.

Adaeze accepted. There was no reason to wait more than a few days to get married - Bartholomew wanted to start his own life and Adaeze didn’t want to go back to China. So on Bartholomew's Birthday, the family traipsed through a blizzard to the nearby, newly constructed family church and had a small wedding.

That awkward moment when you arrive home from your wedding and are just sitting down to a celebratory meal, only to find your dead mother has crashed the party  :-)

It was a big day for the whole family, not just Bartholomew. Bartholomew and Brody both hit their LTR goals and cashed in a bunch of points for a food replicator, another inheritance, and a variety of need-blockers. Life was good. And Bartholomew aged up in the middle of consummating the marriage…

Note: I installed University at this point which added new gameplay and some venues which you will start to see appear in the story.

Chapter Nineteen: Carpe Diem

The next morning, Bartholomew searched for available houses and found that his father's trailer was on the market. He snatched it up and moved with his new bride the same day.

Finally, there was time and money to properly make over Bridgid's room. Her heart hurt a little when she had the fireplace installed – If only she had done it when she first arrived home so Alex could have seen it.

Blake moved his alchemy station into his parent’s old room. He didn't bother renovating as he wasn't likely to spend much time there during the mild seasons.

In the days that followed, Bridgid was extremely busy with work and research, but she found a few moments here and there to log on to her dating profile and check messages. One day, after dozens of not-so-impressive bites, she found a message from Weston Gulley that looked interesting.

She responded and over a couple of online chat sections discovered that he was married. This didn’t dissuade her, he had all the right qualifications and she liked the look of him… If his marriage was healthy, would he be looking for someone else? She decided to meet him at the new local coffee house to see if the relationship was worth pursuing. They met discretely in the back parking lot and the second their eyes met, bells rang. Bridgid felt lightheaded and all sense went out the window - She impulsively kissed him to see how he would react.

It was clear that he was completely smitten with her as well – Even though he was married and their relationship bars were just-met low, hearts appeared. It was love on first sight for both of them. They spent the evening flirting and playing and relationship bars maxed in no time at all.

As the hour grew late, they became closer still.

She asked Weston about his wife and Weston said he would leave her. Since he clearly couldn’t go home to his ex-wife, Bridgid suggested he come live with them at Elderbough House and Weston wasted no time following her home.

Meanwhile, back at the house, Blake had aged up to adult.

After Weston moved in, he and Bridgid spent a lot of time together. It was almost impossible to keep them apart and the boys would frequently find them kissing and touching at all hours, in all manners of dress.

Weston knows he’s got it good.

Thank you everyone for you kind words! I'm glad it is reading as interesting - I am trying to let the game guide the story as much as possible to keep it interesting for *me*, but feared that would be a bit boring for most.

Chapter Twenty: Bridgid Takes the Helm

As her relationship with Weston grew, Bridgid began to think again of marriage and babies. She started reading the books Alex had written. It was funny, but she had never read them before – They lay all over the house, dusty and forgotten.

In all of them she could see her father and the great love her mother had felt for him. Stories about the original Elderbough House and the women who had run it were there too. Alex had told these stories to Bridgid over the years, but in the books they were infused with a passion that Bridgid was only just beginning to understand. This was important – To her mother, to the family, and - she was beginning to admit – to herself.

Bridgid loved her brothers, but now she was beginning to see with adult eyes the struggles Alex had experienced trying to raise them, always under the fear that there would be no girls. Bridgid wanted babies, but not four! When the time came, she resolved she would do whatever was necessary to guarantee they were girls.

Perhaps the time was now - She still knew little about Weston, but the chemistry with him was intense and there was nothing about him she could see that *wouldn't* make a good father to her children.  She made her decision and asked him to marry her the next day.

She proposed…

…and there was no resistance.

They married in the family church.

They made love for the first time on their wedding night.

Bridgid was happier than she had ever been.

Bridgid's mother had told her the signs to watch for to know if she was pregnant and she was sure that the wedding night had done it. Alex had also told her about the gypsy watermelon trick, so the next morning she was off to the shops.

Chapter Twenty One: This Is Why You Run A Background Check

With a few days off because of the wedding, Bridgid thought this would be a good time to add on a conservatory to the house. It had been part of the original house plan ages ago. Blake could use the space to start growing a few things for his alchemy hobby.

Everyone spent a few days working on their jobs and skills. Bridgid and Weston could barely keep their hands off each other and often stopped what they were doing to fool around.

She was also getting to know things about him. They had married on intense attraction alone and there were many things he had not told her. He was very artistic and often painted or played the guitar when he had a few moments.

He was very athletic and loved the equipment in the boy’s room.

But some of the revelations were more shocking - Like the fact that he had a daughter. Bridgid wasn’t sure how she felt about this, but it didn’t affect her own life nearly as much as the next surprise… One day she entered the bedroom unexpectedly and caught him playing with magic!

He was a Witch! This was a little more alarming as she hadn’t seen it coming and it could very well change the course of her children’s lives – They could inherit the trait. She’d have to think about that one.

Time passed and life settled down at the house. Brody aged up to adult.

In time, the baby came. Blake (bless his black heart) completely flipped out.

A girl! Bridgid named her Caledonia.

Now that the baby was here, Brody decided it was time for him to find a place of his own. The house next to Bartholomew's was available, so he bought that.

The baby moved into Bridgid and Weston’s room.

The family moved into baby-care mode, but that didn't stop Bridgid and Weston from groping each other at every chance. One full moon when Caledonia's needs were met enough that they had time, a spontaneous make-out session turned into a try for another baby. Bridgid didn’t want Caledonia to be an only child and there was no sense in waiting.

Nausea the next day tipped off Bridgid that the attempt had worked and she downed more watermelon. She wanted another girl.

Chapter Twenty Two: Growing Spurts

Life was routine for a few days until Caledonia aged up.

Now that she was a toddler (with another baby on the way) it was time to reorganize the house again. Blake moved back out to the tent and the red room was packed up to allow for a play area. They also cleared the big bed out of Bartholomew and Brody's old room for more play space. The alchemy station was moved down to the conservatory. And another crib was added to Bridgid's room in anticipation of the new baby. The family finally indulged in a little domestic help for the first time ever and invested in a Bone Hilda.

Bridgid got to work right away training Caledonia…

…but it wasn't long before the arrival of the second baby interrupted lessons.

Another girl! They named her Colbie. Everyone was tuckered out after the birth and went to sleep all at the same time for once. :-)

The whole family took to training Caledonia and caring for Colbie – Things fell into a rhythm for many days. Caledonia learned all her skills and then took to reading and playing with educational toys.

Bridgid aged up to adult in the middle of the family chaos.

After scarcely even acknowledging Caledonia through her babyhood, Bridgid was touched and surprised to find Blake taking care of Colbie on his own volition. She suspected it was because Colbie had been born both insane and evil and he felt a special bond with her, but who knows? Blake was a loner and contrary as a badger, but he had his soft moments. True, half the time he was stealing candy from the two kids, but the other half he was nurturing and would actually helped out.

In time, Colbie aged up to toddler and the family started training her too.

It was Blake who finished off her walking lessons.
