Otherwise, the €799 Acer is the second-best option. Whichever you buy, though, make sure you get a cooling mat as games will make laptops run warm.
Due to my slow decision-making skills, this happened: https://www.cyberport.de/acer-aspire-vn7-571g-54v3-notebook-i5-5200u-matt-full-hd-gf-940m-windows-8-1-1C26-9K0_1688.html
According to gpuboss.com, the graphics card equals the GTX 860M.  Thanks to your advice and input from my hubby, I plan to order that one later today.  I will, of course, make one last check to make sure nothing better has popped up by then.  New models are appearing rapidly.   ;)
Thanks again!

As for the difference between Windows 8.1 and Windows 8.1 Pro, the main differences is that Windows 8.1 Professional includes a number of features aimed at professional workers.
Yeah, I don't really need those features, but I can see why the man would.  I won't have Pro, but he did put forth a good argument for having 8.1 because it would allow us to easily cross-reference machines if ever one has a problem.  Neither of us has any experience with 7, so I'd have to chase down my busy brother-in-law for help with it.

It should do pretty well. I've had a number of Acer laptops (my current laptop is an Acer v5-552G that does okay with Sims 3). We're thinking of going with MSI when it comes time to replace these as they have the multi-color backlit keyboard, which is something we haven't really found on other laptops. ASUS ROG laptops are also pretty nice, as are the Acer Nitro Black series - but both of those models use red keyboard backlighting that is hard on our eyes.

I do some programming here and there, so it's useful to have the Pro features - slowly learning how to create Minecraft mods with Forge among other things. But I don't use all of them by any means - I'm not hooking it up to the domain at work, for example. I do use the BitLocker encryption though on my USB drives so I can exchange data and a few other things. I think a more limited version of BitLocker encryption is available in the Home Premium version of Windows 8.1, but I'm not entirely sure.

Enjoy the laptop and let us know how things go with it. :)

So, getting delayed in making my order totally paid off.  A proper test with the Acer's graphics card turned up and revealed it to be closer to the 840M.  The price on the MSI dropped to €799, so I'm posting from it.   ;D
The keyboard and touchpad, which I keep hitting while typing, will take some getting used to, but it's pretty and fast!  I loaded up a new TS3 game with all expansions, 2 stuff packs, and most of the Store in Isla Paradiso (the worst town for my old laptop) on the highest settings just for the heck of it.  It ran!  And pretty nicely, aside from some minor stuttering on the water.  Honestly, I was shocked that CAS functioned.  I'm very pleased so far.

Hi, I'm hoping to get a little advice. I've been a Sims fan from the beginning, and for the past several years I've been playing Sims 2 on my trusty HP Pavillion G7. Now, unfortunately, my laptop is not as trusty as it used to be, and since I've had it for a good 4 or 5 yrs, I'm looking for a bit of an upgrade. Time to embrace the future, I suppose. I'm looking for a laptop, for issues of space, and portability. I've actually spent a lot of time reading through the majority of replies on this thread in particular, trying to figure out what might run The Sims 3 for me. Now, I'm not planning on getting all of the expansion packs, I plan on getting maybe 4 or 5 of them. I don't ever do CC (I've been trying to figure out how to do it since the original Sims, and for the life of me never figured it out, so I've given up by now) I don't use stuff packs, or anything like that - just the EP's themselves, and just the ones that interest me.

I'm looking for something less than $600, and have so far found two that I'm currently debating between.

http://www.walmart.com/ip/Dell-Silver-15.6-Inspiron-15-5545-Laptop-PC-with-AMD-A8-7100-Processor-8GB-Memory-Touchscreen-1TB-Hard-Drive-and-Windows-8.1/40100006

And this.

http://www.walmart.com/ip/Toshiba-Jet-Black-17.3-Satellite-C75D-B7215-Laptop-PC-with-AMD-A8-6410-Quad-Core-Processor-8GB-Memory-1TB-Hard-Drive-and-Windows-8.1/36998831

And I just can't seem to make up my mind.

Granted, there isn't a huge difference in price between them. But honestly, I know nothing about how to tell if it has a dedicated video card, anything about video cards really. I have never added ram to a computer before. I'm pretty much a novice who doesn't have a huge budget, only has experience with HPs in the past, and am trying to learn at least a little about this stuff so I know what I'm getting for my money.

Any suggestions, or helpful tips that any of you could drop by would be much appreciated.

Thank you!

Hi In_My_Mind_Palace,

I searched out both these laptops and wouldn't really recommend them as neither of them would work well for Sims 3. Neither of them have dedicated graphics, and would play the game fairly poorly.

Did a little searching and did find one laptop in your price range that will play Sims 3.

Acer Aspire V 15 V3-572G-51DR 15.6-Inch HD Laptop (Platinum Silver)
http://www.amazon.com/Acer-Aspire-V3-572G-51DR-15-6-Inch-Platinum/dp/B00R45UFUY
Price: $599.

This laptop will run Sims 3 and expansions well enough, however since it's base processor speed is under minimum specs. It will need to run in turbo mode throughout your game play. So with that, I wouldn't play the game for long periods of time - for example for more than 2 hours at a time.

And would definitely recommend a cooling mat, to help keep the laptop cooler.

Hope this helps, :)

Hi. I made an account just because I've got all the expansion/stuff packs for sims 3 and all of the store content and run a few mods. I'm looking to get a new computer but even though I've been trying for days to understand what anything means, I do not.

http://www.dell.com/us/p/alienware-x51-r2/pd.aspx Could you tell me if any of these Area x51 configurations are good enough for sims 3? Especially the cheapest one?

Thanks so much! This is exhausting. I just want a new computer already because I miss my sims.

Hi Peafowl,

The Alienware pc should definitely good enough. It should do mostly high settings. Where it may struggle a little is with a large amount of high detail lots and the largest view distance. Play around with the settings a bit to get it to your liking.

Hope this helps, :)

Hi,

I was looking into getting a computer that would work better for Sims 3 than what I currently have (which works, but can be laggy). I have all the expansions and stuff for Sims 3.

I found a couple of Craigslist that sounded good, but was hoping for the opinions of people who have a better idea of whether they're up to par for the job I want them for. Thanks in advance!

Gaming Tower Asus P5E Like New.
Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit) SP1 .
Memory 8.0GB / Hard Drive 500.00GB .
Intel Core 2 Quad 9650-3.0GHz with Turbo Boost 3.51GHz Quad Core/ 4 Threads.
Video graphics Card NVIDIA GeForce GTX 285 - 1.0GB / 2DVI .
DVD drive / 500W Power Supply.

or

Antec H20 620 CPU loop cooler
CDR-W Burner
AMD Phenom II x6 1045T
GTX750Ti Twin Frozer graphics card
8 Gig Ram
120 Gig SSD (Hard Drive)
750w Power Supply

Thanks again!
-Jeremy

Hi BigBobtail,

The second system definitely sounds better. It has a great video card and decent processor.

Hope this helps, :)

Thanks so much!

So if I can't get the second one, is the first one still good or should I keep looking?

It may work, but how well, not sure on that. I'd keep looking to see if you can find something similar to the 2nd one.

AMD Phenom II x6 1045T
GTX750Ti Twin Frozer graphics card

Hope this helps, :)

Hi everyone!

So I feel a little dumb, but I do need some advice on buying a new computer. We want to be able to play Sims 3 and 4, fairly smoothly. For 3 we have most expansions, some CC etc. I do have a budget, but I also want to be sure we get something that will last a while. lol Any advice or help is appreciated! I've been looking at this one, what do you think? http://www.bestbuy.com/site/hp-pavilion-21-5-touch-screen-all-in-one-computer-amd-a4-series-4gb-memory-500gb-hard-drive-black/3200174.p?id=1219088674951&skuId=3200174

Hi, SimsMom80.

Unfortunately, no. This system would not perform well for The Sims 3. The processor and video are below specs for the game and as such it would run very slow on low settings. Also, the memory is pretty low for a 64-bit system to run The Sims 3 plus feed the graphics card the memory it needs for the game. In general, I would steer clear of all-in-one systems as they are usually the equivalent of a low-end laptop embedded in a larger monitor.

Here's some basic specs to look for when researching a computer for these games:
  • Intel Core i5 or Core i7 with a base clock speed of 2.4 GHz or faster (ignore the Turbo Boost number)
  • nVidia GTS or GTX graphics card
  • 8 GB system memory
You may notice I've left AMD off the list. AMD systems have pretty good processors and their gaming graphics cards are pretty decent. But, their model numbers are a little more difficult to work out. So, to keep things simple, I tend to recommend Intel/nVidia over AMD.

One final note - when looking at a computer's specifications, if it only lists Intel HD as the graphics chip, don't buy the system. Intel HD is the built-in graphics chip on the Intel Core processors. While they are normally pretty decent chips, they have known issues with TS3 and TS4, and do not provide any dedicated video memory.

If you like, give us an idea of what your budget is and what country you're in and we'll see if we can find something for you that will meet the criteria above.

Hope this helps and happy Simming! :)

Thank you so much! I'm pretty clueless when it comes to understanding what all the spec details mean. lol

I'm in the U.S., and I have a budget of about $600 give or take a bit. No more than $700 unfortunately.

Thanks again for your help!  :)
