I FINALLY got everything installed and working, and it's like a brand new game! :)

This is the final configuration:
3.1GHz Intel Core i5-4440 Haswell CPU (4th generation)
8GB 1600MHz DDR3 SDRAM
Dedicated NVIDIA GeForce GTX760 Graphics (192-bit Asus OEM model with 3GB GDDR5 RAM)
Windows 8.1 (64-bit)

I used a 250GB Samsung 840 EVO solid state drive for the OS, applications including The Sims 3 game installation and saved games/Documents folder.  The machine boots in under 10 seconds, and my full game loads from desktop to saved game in under 2 minutes.  I've installed all of the EPs via DVD except for Into the Future, which I downloaded from my Origin account so I can load the game without a disc.  I also have all SPs except Movie Stuff (all via Origin download), all worlds except Aurora Skies and Midnight Hollow, and the rest of the store minus about 10 sets.

The full Store download using consolidated sets and compilations was 6GB, and I also downloaded the cumulative super patcher file and backed all of that up.  I don't use any CC.  The entire Sims 3 installation, including the installed Store content, was 43GB on the SSD -- this excludes the actual download folder files which I moved to another drive afterwards.

Thanks to everyone for all of your help and advice!

Glad to hear you got it all working nicely!

Wish I could get my game booting in a couple of minutes. I'm eyeing up the new WD Black2 HDD for my laptop...

Hi!  First of all, I'm super excited that I found this forum (especially since it's my first day on this site) because I am starting the search for a new desktop after 2 years of attempting to play smoothly on a laptop.

Here is my 2 year old laptop specs (note, what it says is not necessarily how it performs due to viruses that wreaked havoc on the laptop before I managed to get them removed):
Model: HP Pavillion dv6 Notebook PC
Processor: AMD A6-3420M APU with Radeon(tm) HD Graphics 1.5 GHz
Installed Memory (RAM): 6.00 GB (5.48 GB usable)
 System Type: 64-bit Operating System.
This computer used to run the Sims 3 pretty well (very few lags, never crashed) without any CC or Mods, but, with the decrease of my computer's health (from the viruses mentioned above), the game has gone from decent to decreasing the setting.  This may be to some degree because of the mods and CC I have downloaded, but I've only put on a fraction of the amount that others have used (and they post their Sims play on Youtube, so you know how well their computer's doing).

Anyway, we're planning on cashing in on my Warranty, but I'm uncertain if I should even bother continuing to play Sims on my laptop or if I should focus on getting a good desktop.  Here are some of the ones that I'm looking at.  If there is one that you would recommend that I don't mention (that's under $1000 US including any extra stuff needed), please let me know!
Computers:
1. HP - Pavilion Desktop - AMD A8-Series - 8GB Memory - 2TB Hard Drive w/ 3.5 GHz Processor Speed.  Cache Memory 4MD on die Level 2.  System Memory (RAM) 8 GB expandable to 32 GB. Type of Memory (RAM): DDR3 SDRAM.  Graphics: AMD Radeon HD 8570D. Available Expansion Slots (I'm not sure how this one works): 3 PCl Express x1, 1 PCl Express x16. Operating System: Windows 8.1 with 64-bit.  Drive Capacity: 2TB. Hard Drive Type: SATA (7200 rpm).
2. Acer - Aspire TC Series Desktop - Intel Core i5 - 8GB Memory - 1TB Hard Drive.  3.1 GHz w/ Turbo boost up to 3.3 GHz. Cache Memory; 6 GB.  System Memory: 8 GB expandable to 16 GB.  Memory Type: DDR3.  Graphics: Intel HD.  Expansion Slots: 1 PCl Express x 1, 1 PCL Express x 15.  Windows 8.1 w/ 64-bit.  Hard Drive Type: SATA III (7200 rpm)
3. Asus - Desktop - Intel Core i7 - 16GB Memory - 1TB Hard Drive.  3.5 GHz w/ Turbo Boost up to 3.9 GHz.  System Memory (RAM): 16 GB expandable to 32 GB.  Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GT 620. Video Memory: 2 GB dedicated.  Windows 8.  Hard Drive Type: SATA (7200 rpm)
4. CyberPowerPC - Gamer Ultra Desktop - AMD FX-Series - 8GB Memory - 1TB Hard Drive. AMD FX-Series.  3.5 GHz with Turbo CORE up to 4.1 GHz. Cache Memory: 6 GB on die Level 2.  System Memory (RAM): 9 GB expandable to 16 GB.  Type of Memory: DDR3 SDRAM. Graphics: AMD Radeon R7 250. Video Memory: 2 GB dedicated.  Available Expansion Slots: 1 PCl Express x 1, 1 PCl.  Windows 8.1 with 64-bit.  Graphics Chip: AMD/ATI. Hard Drive Type: SATA III (7200 rpm)

There are probably more that I can add to this list, but I figured that this was a decent start, and I am definitely considering any of them to some degree because of the price range added to my minimal knowledge of computers.

Note: If at all possible, I think I would like to do some youtubing in regards to Lets Plays, so a computer capable of that should I upgrade my computer would be absolutely wonderful.

Thank you in advance for taking the time to read this regretfully painfully long post.

Out of those options, no1 and no4 are pretty good. No 2 I wouldn't even touch unless you plan to put a new graphics card in it. Intel HD graphics just isn't good enough for Sims 3.

Personally, I'd actually go for No3 and swap the GT620 for a better card. Core i7's are lovely CPU's and it has plenty of RAM in it. If you could find out exactly what GFX card No4 has (it just says AMD 2GB dedicated), then we might be able to advise a little better. :)

Hi Ginny,

If you are in the US, I really recommend this model that I just bought last Monday and received on Friday.  I ordered from the site below:

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1004758-REG/asus_m51ad_us002s_intel_i5_4440_8gb_1tb_7200_gtx760_windows_8.html

3.1GHz Intel Core i5-4440 Haswell CPU (4th generation)
8GB 1600MHz DDR3 SDRAM (there are 3 more DIMMs to upgrade to 32GB total)
1TB 7200rpm Hard Drive
Dedicated NVIDIA GeForce GTX760 Graphics (192-bit OEM model with 3GB GDDR5 RAM)
24X SuperMulti DVD Burner
16-in-1 Multimedia Card Reader
3 x USB 2.0 / 2 x USB 3.0 Ports
802.11ac Wi-Fi & Gigabit Ethernet
Included USB Keyboard and Mouse
Windows 8 (64-bit) -- it's actually Windows 8.1

Some things I found out after doing extensive research this month:
Intel CPU processors are better than AMD if you can afford them.  I didn't do much research into specific AMD chips, but the 4th generation Intel Core i5 and i7 chips have L3 memory caches, which is faster than Level 2.

The quad-core Core i5 is basically the same as the quad-core Core i7, and the ONLY real difference is that the i5 has hyperthreading disabled.  You only need hyperthreading if you are doing intensive video, photo, or 3D CAD editing and rendering.  If you are a casual user of those applications or don't do those things, the 4th generation i5 is actually recommended for gaming (make sure the model starts with i5-4xxx for 4th generation and is a quad-core processor).  If you really need or want the i7, Asus has the same model with the same graphics card for $265 more ($985 including rebate).

8GB of RAM is also plenty if you don't do things like video editing because all current day games utilize 4GB at most (and your graphics card will do most anyway) and your OS will use 1-2GB.  So if you don't use programs that take advantage of extra RAM, anything over 8GB is not being used anyway.  I can run the full Sims 3 on 1920x1080p and alt-tab back and forth to the Windows desktop and run things like Excel, play music, and surf the internet at the same time and all of those load instantly.

The Nvidia cards are significantly better than the AMD for gaming.  It's the second number in the graphics card line that matters the most.  For example, the 20 above is MUCH cheaper than a 50 or 60 (a $55 card vs. a $150 or $250 card) and will be much more expensive to upgrade, assuming the computer you buy has the appropriate power supply for the 50's and 60's.  The Asus I bought comes with a GTX 760 OEM model, which is working amazingly well.

I was overly conservative in my boot time above, it loads in 5 seconds or less (literally, the desktop window is open by the time I hit the power button on my desktop and monitor and sit down) after I added a solid state drive.  Out of the box, it still booted in 30 seconds or so.

This same model is available on Amazon and Best Buy.  B&H and Amazon both offer an $80 manufacturer's warranty for computers purchased in June, and B&H had free 3 day shipping and no sales tax if you don't live in NY.  Best Buy didn't show the rebate online, but I'm not sure if that's because they were unaware of it.  It cost me $720 for the actual desktop, which only excluded the monitor and speakers.  I already had my own that I used instead.  I added a 250GB Samsung 840 EVO solid state drive for $135.  If anyone is interested in the actual steps to add a SSD, PM me.

As I mentioned above, I own basically the entire Sims 3 series including most store content, and the game now boots up in under 2 minutes and saves are under 30 seconds.  I looked all over in many places and couldn't find anywhere to buy the same configuration with the CPU, GPU, RAM, and ability to upgrade to a SSD for any cheaper.  It runs much better than machines I've paid over $1500 for in the past, all for $855.

I hope this helps someone. :)

Hello

I'm so glad I found this forum and this subject, really informative so thank you.

I'm looking to replace a laptop which is on its last legs and has served me pretty well with playing sims 3. Mu budget is up to a max of £800. Would prefer to pay less if possible but if it means I get more bang for my buck then so be it to pay the extra. Hoping to play sims 4 on it too.

I've identified 3 I like. Could you help and let me know what you think please. Or if you can recommend something else, hoping to order to arrive early next week as am away then.

There are other gaming laptops on this site when I've looked...would any of them be absolutely worth increasing the budget to £850?

Thank you in advance for any help you can offer.

This one, out of  the three, is the only one I can completely vouch for and say that this one would do well.
The first one has a processor that's brand new, so there's no reviews, no marks on it, and it's an i3 (which is significantly below an i5 or an i7 which is what's usually recommended.

This one:
http://www.ebuyer.com/630598-msi-gx60-gaming-laptop-free-bag-9s7-16fk12-296
Was good, and the processor is good and so is the graphics card on passmark, but after my bad experience with AMD I wouldn't touch it with a ten-foot poll. However, I have heard their 5000 series is their best series. Shrugs, my money is still on the Optimus one you were looking at.

^ This. Good CPU, good GPU, lots of RAM. 3 year warranty. Not a brand I know, but I'd still grab it at that price tbh!

Thank you KhaineGB and Livvielove. That's the one I was leaning towards too. They seem to be a decent company who custom build laptops and desktops and also do the already built ones like this.

Will order to arrive Saturday, thank you both. Woohoo.

GPU question...
Has anyone used the AMD 2xx series of GPUs with Sims 3? I'm just curious how they would compare performance wise to a Nvidia 6xx or 7xx series.

CPU: 7 (Up 64% from recommendations)
GFX: 4 (Up 28% from recommendations)

Thanks

No.

Core i3 CPU's are ok, but not fantastic, and it's using Intel graphics. Intel graphics are KNOWN to have issues with The Sims 3 from Pets and beyond.

EDIT: Okay, apparently some people are saying they CAN run Sims 3 on HD 4000 cards at Medium to High settings depending on resolution.

Personally, I'd stay FAR away from it, especially since it will be using your system RAM and you only have 4GB of that, but that's just me.

Hi, I'm so happy I found this post before I bought a new laptop. Would anyone be able to tell me if this laptop: http://www.thegoodguys.com.au/buyonline/Hewlett_Packard_Envy_15-j112TX_15.6%22_Intel_Core_i7_Processor_Notebook_F6C78PA
would be able to run the sims 3 with most expansion packs and around 3GB of custom content reasonably well?
Thanks!

Game and expansions will be fine, custom content... maybe.

Laptop HDD's are slow as sin, and custom content uses package files, so having lots of package files will just slow everything down. If you can compact your CC into as few files as possible (I believe there's a tutorial on the net somewhere for it?), that will help a LOT. :)

Hello!
So I'm happy I found this topic :D This is my first post here and I have already a big question:

I decided I'm going to make my own sims computer, I will only use it to play The sims 2 and all ep's and sp's, the sims 3 and all but 2 ep's and when it comes out, the sims 4.
I also like to have cc, max 6GB for every game. (And I will probably install some sims related programs, like CEP, DDO, ... and some edit programs to make my own cc)

Anyway, I have this list of things I want to buy:

Graphic card: MSI N760 TF 2GD5/OC:  NVIDIA GeForce GTX 760, 2GB,
Processor: Intel Core i5 4440 / 3.1 GHz - 6 MB cache
Motherboard: MSI Z87-G45 Gaming (ATX - LGA1150 Socket - Z87 - USB 3.0 - Gigabit Ethernet - HD Audio)
SSD: Samsung 840 EVO Basic - Solid state drive  (120 GB)
Harddrive: (My dad's going to pick one compatible with all the other stuff :) ) 500 GB
Power: Seasonic G-650: 650 Watt
Ram: Kingston ValueRAM 8GB (2x4)
As for the system, We have windows 7, so I'm going to use that (I have w8 on my latop and it has brought me nothing but bad things)

Question: are those things good, will all the 3 games work smoothly with cc?
For the Ram, why is it two times 4? is that the same as just 8, or is this just a stupid question?

My dad has build computers before so, he'll help me building it but he has zero experience with sims, so I came here to ask if those things I've chosen are okay.
I'm pretty happy, with the computercase and fans and so on this will cost me no more than 800 euros! :D

So, Thanks in advance for answering my question ♥
