Vanishing saves and not enough memory crashes
« on: February 25, 2013, 04:40:00 AM »
Hello there, I found a link to your site via The sims official tech help forum and it seems as though you all know what you're talking about here!

I was hoping someone could shed some light on my issues with the game (some new , some longer running!)

My save problem is at the moment (I guess this started around the last store update weirdly enough) my saves are vanishing!

I did a factory reset and changed towns after this issue had already ruined a couple of legacies (not even past first generation I might add) I had running and now my game saves but in the main saves folder it shows that each new save is not generating an automatic backup file.

These saves are not showing as corrupt and only seem to be available to load in game if I go and manually create a copy of each and rename them as backups myself.

I did not add any new mods when this began by the way.

I am patched to 1.50 and all the mods I have were deleted and replaced with up to date versions

I clear caches automatically before each play also

Also I am very puzzled by the fact that though I am extremely strict regarding mods getting updated/ have a computer more than capable of running the Sims 3, my game shuts off if I go over 3gb of RAM when running it.

Usually this happens in CAS and after more than an hour of play. (and I do save half hourly using save as and new names each time)

I have tried to apply the 4gb patch and override the amount of memory allocated to the Sims by windows, turned off indexing, made sure nothing else is running and used Razer game booster to launch the game. Also I bypass the launcher and start the game from the Sims exe file directly.

How can my game be so easily terminated when I have 16gb of RAM, a good video card (, a new processor and up to date drivers?

Please help as I am so tired of this happening and there does not seem to be any logic as to why this keeps going on.

I don't know what info you need to fully ascertain the problem but I am happy to do anything I have to in order to fix this

Anything at all would be so appreciated xxxxx
Thank you very much

Welcome to the forum!

There was no need to place a DxDiag file as we usually don't need that much of your information.    When you create a new save?   Do you ever save again under that file and then it doesn't create a backup?    Creating a new save doesn't automatically make a backup but when you save over that save again that's when the backup will appear.  The backup files are the previous saves of that particular name.  So every time you save under that name, the previous save becomes the .backup.    Check and see if saving twice to the same file name continues to not make backups.

As for the memory problem, I've noticed it too after a while of playing.   I have a decent enough computer that was built in the last year or so but I still get the memory problem and I have 12 GB of RAM myself.   The problem is that Windows limits the amount of RAM used to play a game unless you're using  a workaround that I've never heard before that bypasses that.

Then again if it only happens in CAS - there could be a piece of CC that is causing your Sims game.  You said mods but didn't mention if you used CC.  Have you thought of lowering your graphics settings any?  Not a lot just one tweak here or there - especially dealing with shadows or reflections.   I keep reflections off water due to prior experience with it causing crashing.

Also using save as constantly can compile issues of a save into a new file over and over and actually make the file larger.   Do you play in fullscreen or windowed mode?  I find windowed mode allows me to play for a lot longer but because the game is a memory leak, it requires restarting every hour and a half.   Pull up your task manager and watch the RAM while in windowed mode.   See if it spikes when going into CAS.   Mine always crashed when traveling during a long running game to the point I had to eventually stop even trying until the challenge was done.

I wish you luck and I hope this helped any at all.

Thank you so much for your welcome and reply xx
I didn't realize that about the backups and I will try what you suggested there. Noted the point about turning off reflections thank you, that makes sense :)
I have decided to cull my CC a bit and see if that helps at all as well and yeah the memory thing is so irritating! I find the game reverts backwards everytime a new patch comes on I have to redo the large address aware thing, even then it can't go over 4gb. It's frustrating
Anyway I will try your suggestions ! Thanks very much xxx
