Building Victorian type porches

So I'm trying to learn how to build better by looking at the houses I like.  I really like some of the Victorian type houses that have porches that are hexagons or other non-square shapes.   But I can't figure out how to make a non-square foundation shape for the life of me!  I've tried the diagonal foundation, but that doesn't do it, and move objects didn't.

How do I make non-square foundations for a porch?  I'm thinking of something like on this lovely house:  http://www.carls-sims-3-guide.com/forum/index.php/topic,6163.0.html

How do I make those kinds of porches?

(I also tried to search for this topic, but didn't find anything, so if there are threads that will help, I'd be happy to be directed to them!)

You'll need a combination of diagonal and normal foundation. On the couple of occasions I've made a hexagonal shaped room, I make the basic shape of the room, then fill in the gaps with diagonal foundation.

Thanks!  But how do you do that?   I think I need a bit more direction....

Meant to say octagonal shaped room, lol. What I do is make a cross shape with the normal foundation tool. So, you'd put down three squares of foundation in a row, then one more square on either side of the middle piece. It should look like a plus sign. Then switch to the diagonal foundation tool. Drag it from the uppermost corner of the cross to the opposite corner, then pull it out so that it makes a piece of foundation that's 2 x 1 squares. It should have filled out the corners of the cross. Do it to the other side, and it should make an octagon. Sorry, it's hard to explain... If you play around with it for a little while it should make sense. Someone more experienced with building might be able to give you a better method, too.

Thanks! I'll try this tonight and see if I can get it to work for me, but it does sound pretty clear.
