Mistakes made in Sims 3
« on: February 06, 2013, 10:26:09 PM »
Hi,

I am starting this topic to know which mistakes you made with your sim, like what are the things that you did with your sim that you regret.
I would like to know for tips so I wont make the same mistake.
Thanks :)

I made my sim repair the stereo (as he was in the military career, so he needed to work on his athletic skill). He ended up being fatally electrocuted, so the Grim Reaper ended up coming for him. But I notice that the chances of being electrocuted seem to be random, so don't be afraid of letting your Sims repair things

Biggest one I recall, forgot to pause then game durring a bathroom break, came back to screaming and panicing sims as half the house was on fire, 3 sims had already burned to death, and a fourth was on fire.  Good lesson on pausing your game when you leave the room.

Welcome to the forum, ingrid hill.

I can honestly say there's not a mistake I've made that I would share for the reason that if I hadn't made them then the fun afterwards wouldn't have been had.  Not all mistakes are bad, yeah you can regret it happened but it's a game and you could always quit without saving.   If you're new to the Sims, I would just play and play and play some more and do whatever you want.  Make mistakes, have fun and happy simming.

My worst mistake was (and sometimes still is) letting my newly created Sims have access to a stove.  It always ends with fire.  So many fires.  When I move a new family into a pre-made home I always forget about the stove, and then after the inevitable waffle fire I don't replace it.  I just leave the black husk of appliance in the middle of the kitchen counters as a lesson to them.  And if I'm building a new house for a new family I don't give them a stove until they've got a couple of ranks of cooking under their belts.  In the meantime they get to have an all salad and cereal diet.   :D

I wouldn't call them mistakes, I'd say they were pitfalls, but all the same, I'll share them because they aren't really things you do in the game.

Don't feel like you have to do everything with every sim.  Not only is that hard, but then all your sims are alike.  Not everyone has to max every skill, or read every book.

Don't read too much about the game.  It's no fun if you already know every little secret.  Try to figure things out on your own.  If you run into a problem, then dig around for the solution.

Anyone who has not made mistakes has not tried something new.

I've made a few mistakes (such as letting my Dynasty heirs slack off ;D), but from them, I've learned. My biggest mistake was building too much at once. Back when I cheated a lot, I built a humongous underground complex for my Dynasty family, which caused many traffic issues, many delays getting to work, and all-round headaches. It spanned probably five floors, with a giant playground, pool, courtyard, hedge maze, and many, many bedrooms. I was also a fan of tomb traps at the time, locking the spouse in the sub-sub-sub-basement, and playing around with glitches. I loaded that file recently, it was only first-generation but took around 40 minutes to load, and something like 3 minutes to render items.
From that, I learned to build modest houses. ;D

Dang, that's a big house....
I've made a mistake in letting a child have the LTW of Perfect Mind, Perfect Body and not try to have him gain alot of logic as a kid. However as a teen, I make him work out of a few hours, then when he's tired I make him play chess with his brother. (It's working out pretty well though. He's at level 4 athletics and level 6 logic, if I remeber correctly.)
Having my witch not Research Alcemey? I swear, if I didn't press that by mistake, he's never be on his way to complet his LTW. :P
If a cluttered desk is an indication of a clutter mind, what is indicated by an empty desk?

I once left my game unpaused when I was getting a snack from the kitchen, and while I was in there, one of my two elderly Sims decided to die of Old Age. My dog was just standing in the doorway of my study as if she was sad too (she doesn't usually do that, by the way! ;)) and as soon as I noticed the Grim Reaper, I was like "Why on Earth is the Grim Reaper doing on my lot?". Then I saw my Sim's grey ghost and that's when I realised she had died.  :'( I know it isn't as bad as having a Sim dying in a fire behind your back, but since then, I usually make sure my game is paused when I'm away from the computer.

This is a fun topic!  I've made many mistakes but can't think of them off hand except when I first got Moonlight Falls I just let my sims play around the hood.  One of them went to the Alchemy store and came out with some crushes on sims.  I'm not sure how it happened but I think one of the Crumplebottom sims cast a spell on mine.  So now I'm very careful around that store AND the Crumplebottom sisters!  ;D

Hehe...not long after I got the game, I was playing a pseudo-legacy and I had sent my founding mother to fix the dishwasher after a failed attempt at upgrading a stereo, thinking that the dishwasher was a plumbing object...the scary music and Grim's arrival made me learn otherwise. :P Luckily she apparently had a deathflower in her inventory so no harm, no foul and to this day I have a soft spot for electrocution ghosts.

My biggest mistake is being afraid of doing something wrong. My greatest lesson is that sometimes opportunity knocks at the very second and slips through the doorway so always be on the lookout.

I think the biggest mistake anyone can make with the Sims is thinking that it's a game you have to "win". Sometimes the game itself takes you in a direction you didn't plan for and, much like real life, if you roll with it things turn out for the best.

When I first bought Sims 3 I decided to create my most recent heir from my S2 legacy (who had just graduated from University) and use him as a basis for an S3 legacy.  The only problem was that I didn't understand the nuances of S3 yet, so I created him as an adult rather than a YA.  By the time he had got through his early game struggles and actually had a functional house to live in, he was already nearly an elder.  He had no romantic interests and certainly no heir, so he had to quickly apply for adoption.  He kicked the bucket leaving only his adopted teenage son alone in the extremely basic house.

Not a great way to start a dynasty.
