Chapter 1: The Origin of the Species
Darwin: Good day to you ladies and gentlemen of the esteemed forum! My name is Darwin, Charles Darwin, and I am an esteemed geologist and biologist from the age of queen Victoria. I am greatly honored to be-
Betabee: Enough with the introducing yourself already! we need to get on with telling the forum about how day 1 went.
Darwin:Oh great. A watcher.
Betabee: What, you thought a victorian gentleman knows enough about immortal dynasties to run one all by himself? You've got a lot to learn, my friend.
Darwin: I do agree with you on that last point.
Betabee: Oh, and this is your beagle. He's called Watson.
Darwin: Why?
Betabee: Why what?
Darwin: Why do I need a dog? Why is it a beagle? And why the name Watson?
Betabee: Hunting, historical reference, and a clue to generation 2. Now set to!
Betabee: Here's the customary empty field shot that seems to occur at the start of all immortal dynasties.
Darwin: Why am I talking to a musician of all people?
Betabee:We need a sponsor for our scientific research. Plus, you need a painter and/or sculptor. And he's just across the road.
Darwin: What about Billy Caspian?
Betabee: Couldn't be bothered to send you right across town. Besides, good looks aren't everything!
Betabee: After moving in Jon Lessen, selling his car and starting to build the house, I honestly didn't intend to make the floorplan look like anything in particular. But looking from above, who does this remind you of?
So, here comes the house tour! I've only furnished the ground floor so far, the upper floors can wait for later. This is the art studio and bedroom.
The kitchen diner. you may notice a colour theme going on. Since darwin's field of study is biology (the life sciences) the house is going to be green until I get bored of it.
The indoor nursery, where Darwin can tend his large plant collection without them going dormant on him. The trees will be put in an orchard out the back, but for now are by the front door.
The entrance hall and study area. After taking this I also put here some things for Watson to use.
To conclude the first house tour, here's a picture of the outside of the house. I will landscape it properly at a later date.
So, back to the story!
Jon: Yes, it has always been my dearest wish to adopt a little girl to
paint portraits of a friend I just moved in with cherish and raise as my very own.
Betabee: Hello Jo, welcome to the Science House!
Jo: What the. . ?
Betabee: Yes, I'm your watcher. Now get to a dresser so we can change those clothes to something better, dear.
Jo: They didn't say anything about watchers when they told me I was being adopted by Jon Lessen!
Betabee: Lovely purple eyes, but that greeny-brown hair has to go, my dear. Any hairdye colour preference?
Jo: Um. . . Just another shade of brown will do.
Jo: You dressed me as a pixie? Really?
Betabee: Make the most of childhood, dear. Now go get some sleep. You've got painting to do tomorrow!
Watson: What?
Betabee: You can talk?
Watson:Yes, and you're disturbing my nap. Go away, watcher!
Betabee: I thought you were friendly!
Watson: Not at naptime.
And so day 1 ends with Jon beginning the lonely and caffine-powered task of producing 25 ice sculptures before Darwin's adult birthday.
