I hope you don't think there's anything wrong with being a completionist, Pam...

Self-employment rocks!

All my sims will be self-employed.

My mains are a hacker and an artist, then my 2 others are gardeners and fishermen!

I think I am the opposite of completionist.  I start quite a few families, get attached, maybe have one of the elders retire, start a new generation, then move on to the next new family.  Eventually, I will go back to the first, come up with a new plan and kind of take it from there.  I do have a retired sim that I let pick her retirement, she retired, passed away, I brought her back with ambrosia and now she is at it again, can't seem to let her go.

I have also had them work until they passed away, in fact I had one sim, come out of work at the towers and the computer panned over to him and the grim reaper came.  I think they are happy working when they are elder, for the most part anyway.  So many options to take into consideration, there are so many things for them to do when they do retire since we have ambitions now.

If it's a career related to a Sim's Lifetime Wish then they stick it out all the way 'til Elder if they haven't maxed it. If they max a career before hitting Elder it depends on whether they roll the wish to retire.
I'll sometimes switch careers if the option to switch career tracks and get a promotion come up; I won't if that career is my Sim's LTW.
Currently, Sam, one of my Sims, was originally in the Science Career, got to level 3. When Ambitions came out I gave him the Eccentric trait to trigger the Ghost Hunter LTW, I reached level 10 then I quit and made him a firefighter, currently at level 8. When his wife (level 10 Doctor) reaches Elder I'll probably won't have her retire 'til pretty late on, but Sam I think will retire not long after hitting Elder.
Grr Argh!

I keep them working unless they roll the wish to retire. I usually end up with big families, and it's nice to keep sims out of the house for a while.

I play untill one of the following happens:

1. If it's a career game, whenever the sim reaches level 10 in that career.
2. If it's a LTW thing, whenever the LTW is completed.
3. If I'm just messing around, whenever I get bored.  :)

Suffice it to say, I've never seen any wish to retire, nor seen a sim die from old age.

I quit if I need a nanny for newborns or toddlers. The babysitting service in Sunset Valley leaves much to be desired.

I quit if the job becomes annoying. Doctor/Spy pulling double shifts all the time (no time for sleep, food, bathing, or woohoo). The chef never gets a weekend off (hard to throw parties with your spouse). Reports (law enforcement - forensic branch), Lectures (educator), Interviews (journalist) are all things I don't like doing. Things like that.

I quit if I want to start a different career for whatever reason. I quit my gardener 'job' to be a chef so I could get the chef fridge.

I usually let them keep their job unless they roll the "wants to retire" wish, and then I let them.  The only time I cancel out that wish is if they have a LTW to reach a certain level of their career and they haven't completed it yet.  If they don't wish to retire, then they just keep working.

I like to make them happy.  :)

I've had many many sims get to the elder stage but I have never had one retire, I just don't see the point unless you need them to look after a child. Why not just keep the money rolling in, as usually my elders are the ones that have the highest career level and therfore get more money! After all I do LOVE my money!  :D

I like to retire when I turn elderly, then start fishing/photography/painting.

I usually end the game and start the next game.  Or after the adult phase, have one kid and play that sim, sometimes for a few generations, but usually end it after ambrosia or other goals are reached.

One sims made level 10 rockstar and maxed Charisma, so I quit and went into politics.  This was yesterday and should be interesting.  With over 500 songs performed money will not be an issue playing for tips once a week.

With the Astronaut I have, he kept the job and picked up gardening and fishing.  Now his townie wife and him will live forever and never have to waste time taking care of little roly-poly, crying, diaper-filling machines ;)  jk...  But I might play them occasionally and not have children.

I have mine retire as long as they are an elder and reach their LTW.  With Ambitions my sims sometimes make more money being retired then continuing to work - especially if they were a Firefighter or an Architectural Designer.
This way they can help take care of the grandchildren and their child/children can work on their own career choices.   :)
