Chapter Thirty "Do I
have to?" Olive groaned, setting dow her fork and turning pleading green eyes on her parents. She'd had her birthday today, and was upset at the fact that she would have to spend six hours a day at school instead of having fun.
"Every child goes to school, Olive" Zachary said reasonably.
"Mom didn't!"
"Yeah, and being locked in a basement and totally isolated from the outside world was so much better." Heather said dryly. "Face it, Olive, you're going."
Grumbling, Olive got up and stopped upstairs from her room. The sun had already set, and her curtains were closed, so the room was bather in a comforting darkness.
She flopped down on her bed, and stared up at the ceiling. "Why do I even have to go to school?" She mumbled into the growing darkness. "I can learn just fine at home..."
"Maybe, but you'll learn better if you go to school." Heather said, opening the door.
"But it'll be HARD!" She protested.
"You'll manage. Now put on you pajamas, it's bedtime."
"Fine..."
Time skip... "I'm hoooome!" Olive sang out, bursting through the front door of her house. Heather was at her easel, painting away.
"Hi, honey! How was your day?"
"Not AS bad as I thought." Olive confessed. "There's some papers for you to sign, and I have to do this worksheet about my family." She yanked her backpack off and tossed it on the couch. She then pulled a worksheet out of her binder and skipped up the stairs. "Be sure to sigh them before tomorrow!"
In her room, Olive pulled a blue pen out of the drawer, and flopped on her bed with the worksheet. "Okay, let's see..."
Time skip... "There!" Olive sat back to admire her work. The worksheet read:

"So what exactly is in this shawarmy stuff anyway?" Olive asked curiously, looking over her mother's shoulder.
"It's shawarma, Olive, not shawarmy. Shawarma is meat, tomatoes, cucumbers and pickled turnips rolled up in a piece of bread.
"I... see. I'm going outside."
"Okay. Have fun, and close the door all the way behind you."
Olive walked around her house to the backyard, and climbed on the trampoline. She had only been on it once, and her parents had been watching and wouldn't let her jump too high.
But they're not watching me now. Olive thought.
I can jump as high as I please... She began to jump, slowly at first, but jumping higher and higher until she flew well above the roof of her house. The closed her eyes, and savored the feeling of the wind on her face and hair, and the freedom of the air surrounding her. She was almost flying, except she was always doomed to return to the ground. A thought struck her, and she smiled slightly.
I guess I was wrong about my biggest dream. Olive thought.
I have another dream. And impossible dream, one that I can never fulfill. But I don't care. My one, precious dream...To fly limitlessly.
