Oooh, so Nancy's finally getting her act on. About time, too.
I feel bad for that girl with the blue hat. Geoffrey indeed doesn't pay her enough, I mean, look at what the poor girl's wearing in that weather. Crazy. :o
Is this chapter better? ;)
I'm still fanning myself, that was so adorableee!
Well, I'm sold. You got yourself a new eternally faithful reader here. :D

Thank you so much!  ;D Really chuffed you're enjoying it! Totally agree, there is no amount of money that would get me out in the snow in that outfit, but you know how townies do their own thing ;) It's funny seeing her pop up everywhere, and trying to work her into the story :D

Edited comment to add: Yes, I'm glad Nancy's finally beginning to see clearly - she's a formidable character behind all the superficiality and fluff. I thought this story was going to be mostly about Erin, but Nancy is (for me) turning into the most interesting character. Everyone sees the Hopelessly Romantic, Family man that Geoffrey is, but it's been wickedly satisfying to explore what might be happening behind the sunny facade of Sunset Valley. SV is far and away my favourite town to play, but it's funny how rarely I play with any of the stock characters - I think that might change :)

I must agree that Nancy is truly the breakout character here. Erin's been there to help stir the toughness from Nancy's heart, but now the giant has awakened and is ready to assert herself. It's amazing how these Sims can develop their own stories quite beyond our own expectations.

So sad and heart-wrenching. That dinner argument about had me in tears. I found myself mentally yelling at Geoffrey for being so cruel to his family! He is so out of character for his traits and yet you make it work so well.

I am right there with you on SV...and the townie families are my favorite part. So many different people and personalities, and every one has their story. :D

I know, right? I really wasn't expecting this story to go quite so... dark, although I can't really blame the Sims for that, I suppose.

Erin's been there for Nancy, but she's also undergone a fair amount of change too - I will be trying to get back to her quite soon, as I don't want to make this a one-Sim show, much as I like Nancy!

I'm sorry it made you cry  :'( It was really upsetting to write as well. It is out of character for his traits, but I was talking to a friend about it, and she reminded me that, in the real world, a lot of abusive people are seen by everyone apart from (or even including) their partner as extremely romantic and devoted to their family - the two aren't necessarily incompatible; in fact, in real life, it's a key component of how abuse is covered up (the idea that no-one would believe the victim because the perpetrator is seen as so nice). In The Sims, though, thankfully, this is generally not the case!

Just caught up - what a wonderful series of updates!
It seems the focus has shifted onto the Landgraabs much. I love the insight into little Malcolm.
I think, his mother is clearly helping him out of his shell. But how will he react to losing his beloved Tesla? Bad timing for a boarding school, Malcolm. Do something to save yourself!  :o

They'll never find Tesla again under all that snow.  Oh poor Malcolm.  And yes, Nancy show a bit of backbone and ditch that mean Geoffrey.  Being a vampire obviously doesn't suit him, he always nice and sweet in my games.

Nancy knew that he had done it. He might undermine her intelligence, but surely he couldn't think so little of her as to insult her in that way. Was it just one more twisted cruelty on his part? Enough. She would tolerate this no longer. As soon as Malcolm was safely ensconced in a book downstairs, she followed him. She found him in Malcolm's room, staring at a picture of herself and Malcolm, taken some autumn not long ago. He was not in it. She supposed he had been at work, but found that she couldn't remember exactly.

She stalked up to him, and tapped him on the shoulder. With a shudder, she realised that it was the first time she'd touched him voluntarily in longer than she cared to imagine. It was hard to be affectionate when someone was so cold to you. For the first few years, she'd tried to warm him up, but some time, not very long ago, her arms started freezing up when he looked at her. Now her arms moved freely, as her anger increased.

"How could you be so cruel to your own son," she raged. "I've known for a long time that you hate me... yes, hate me Geoffrey, don't deny it, but you love that boy so much. How could you?"

He turned, surprised, but a half smile on his face.

"Nancy, what on earth are you talking..." his voice trailed off.

"Don't pull that with me, Geoffrey Barthelet. Your son's pet turtle, for goodness' sake. What did you hope to achieve by this... this cruelty? Were you just trying to drive me crazy?"

He dropped his head for a second, but then jutted his chin and looked her in the eye.

"Do you know how difficult you are as a wife, Nancy?"

Nancy thought he had mentioned it before.

"You're ice cold. You think of no-one but yourself. You're selfish, Nancy Landgraab, and you're spoiled. You love Malcolm, I'm sure, but you're always off at your job, your mind is all over the place. Malcolm needs you to look after him, and I... oh, well, I'm just vaccinating the public against diseases, curing their ailments, delivering babies... At least I'm doing some good. And what are you? A shallow, ageing, fluff-for-brains heiress. You talk about your career... with all your advantages, you're not even CEO. If I'd had what you'd had, I would own this valley by now, and nevermind the Goths. But you... well, you keep running around, trying to be friends with people. Trying to buy affection. You think they don't see through you? You think they don't laugh at you? You think they don't hate you?" He stepped closer, and she could feel his breath on her face. She winced, knowing that what he say must be true... was true. She had been spoiled. She was selfish. And... maybe they did all hate her. She couldn't blame them. She hated her too.

Geoffrey, as though smelling weakness, hit her in the face, with no warning. Stars bloomed behind her eyes, and she gasped as she fell back.

He stood in front of her, looking distraught. "I... I never... Nancy, you know I'm not a violent person."

She snapped. She could not remember what happened afterwards, only standing with her hands on her hips as he limped out of the room. She remembered him snarling at her as she shut the door.

She stood, panting, listening to his faltering steps go down the hall, down the stairs. Trembling, she put her arm on the chair to steady herself, and saw out of the corner of her eye, the picture of her and Malcolm, awkwardly posed, not touching, and smiling determinedly at the camera, some time in autumn not long ago.

She's angry enough to do it! She wants to leave, but it's a very hard thing to do. Lots of women are so strong for so long, that it's hard to pinpoint when something becomes unbearable - and unbearable things are very scary. And poor Malcolm - as a child, he's not in a position to do anything to change that dynamic. All he can do is learn to cope with it.

As for Tesla... I'm sure the snow was a bit of a shock, but he probably just went into super-fast hibernation. Let's hope he emerges in the spring.

Geoffrey walked downstairs. He was fuming.

Malcolms was standing at the bottom of the stairs, in his pyjamas. He looked near to tears. Geoffrey had a pang of remorse, and bent down to hug the boy.

"Go and pack your things," he said gently. "There's been a change in plans."

Malcolm looked at him and Geoffrey gave him a gentle push. "Go on. And get changed into something smart, we're going out for the evening."

Malcolm said nothing, but went to pack his stuff. Geoffrey followed him up to his room. He could hear Nancy getting ready for bed. She'd been getting into work so late, that it was about time she had an early night. He didn't know how she could be so selfish as to go to bed, after wounding him so greatly, but what did he care?

The fire was burning brightly in Malcolm's room as he sorted automatically through his clothes. Geoffrey gave quiet suggestions, while he poked the fire, and Malcolm finished quickly, although his glassy face looked like a sleepwalker. The fire was beginning to burn down. Geoffrey smiled at his son fondly, and sent him to put on his suit. "I'll meet you downstairs," he said.

Geoffrey hefted the suitcase. As he went to leave the room, he turned back, as though he'd forgotten something, and threw three more logs on the fire. One half-fell out of the grate, but if Geoffrey noticed, he didn't go back to fix it. He shut the door, and went downstairs. Malcolm appeared, and they got into Geoffrey's car.

The club was quiet, and Geoffrey got Malcolm and himself lemonades. They went over to sit by the fire.

Neither of them noticed Claire Ursine walking quietly through the room.

"We could have done this at home, daddy," Malcolm said. "I have a fire in my room."

"Sit down, son." Geoffrey sounded tired. "I wanted to talk to you, man-to-man. The thing is, your mother and I have not been getting along well recently."

Malcolm nodded. "I know."

"And, well, we both love you, and want the best for you, so we've decided that, while we work things out, you should be able to live in a place where you don't have to worry about any of that."

"But... but I'll worry anyway. Mummy's really unhappy."

Geoffrey frowned. "And what about me, eh? Listen, the fact is that you can't trust what your mother says. She lies about all sorts of things. I bet she didn't even find that turtle, but just made up a story. The thing is, we're going to go on to the school tonight, after we finish here. The headmaster is expecting us. And, you know, if you don't like it, it's not forever. You might even be able to come home when your mother and I have sorted everything out. Who knows, it might be sooner than you think."

Malcolm sat, thinking about this. Then he said, "Daddy, you can play the piano, can't you? Can you go play that song I liked?"

Geoffrey smiled fondly at his son. What a good boy he was, his father's son. No doubt he meant that Sousa March that Geoffrey had liked to play loudly, when Malcolm was a toddler, and screaming through the din. Nancy had always sighed at him, even then, for making the baby cry, but she was stupid. Geoffrey had always known they would bond over it. He went off to the conservatory. Malcolm waited until he was out of the room, and then pulled out his phone. He needed to make a call.

********

Back at home, Nancy was not sleeping well. The house was quiet, and she assumed that Geoffrey was in their bed, and Malcolm was asleep in his own. Nancy was in the spare room, a small, plain room. She could not face the frills of her marital bed. She would have to leave next morning, and take Malcolm with her. She knew where she could go. The wooden hut, far out of town. Remote, beautiful, and lacking all amenities. Geoffrey had never been interested in roughing it, and so they had never been. She didn't think he even knew where it was. Certainly he would not think of her, such a priss, going there voluntarily. She herself had not been up there in years, although when she was a child, she remembered long summers swimming in the lake, running through the woods, chasing insects. She had not always been so prim, she remembered. How was it that the summers of childhood seemed to stretch out so long? These days, the years slipped by so quickly, and yet when she thought about last summer, it seemed as though it has lasted only a matter of days, and was years long gone by now. And the autumn... leaves had fallen, having grown strong and green for some months, then dried, raked, and - she remembered Erin's bonfire - burned. She could remember that day so vividly that she could almost smell the smoke still. That, too, seemed years ago now. The snow was what lasted, she thought, shivering. At least in bed, she was warm - very warm. She supposed that the fire in Malcolm's room was nearly out, but the heat remained... was getting stronger. And the smoke was not, she realised, a memory, but sharp and acrid in her nose.

She leapt out of bed without even pausing, and ran to her son's room. Opening the door, she was confronted with flames, but she only glanced over them before searching the room with her eyes for Malcolm. With relief, she realised that he was not there... but the flames were getting higher, and the sound and the fury was increasing.

She grabbed the small fire extinguisher from beside the door (oh, thank god she'd insisted on it when Geoffrey said that the boy would enjoy woodfires in his room), and set to. The fire was enormous now, and she could feel the flames scorching her face, leaping around her. Her heart pounded in her mouth as she realised how much danger she was in, but she could not... would not leave the fire in her son's room.

*********

Back in the club, Geoffrey came to a satisfied crescendo on the piano. Malcolm had been watching quietly, not mentioning that he had meant Rachmaninov's concerto, and clapped quietly when Geoffrey finished pounding the keys. Geoffrey beamed heartily at his son.

"Come on," he said jovially. "If I'm to get home by tomorrow morning to see your mother, we'd better leave now."

He got up from the piano, still grinning widely to himself.

As they left, Geoffrey smiled heartily at the barstaff, and told them goodnight, with eloquence uncharacteristic of his usual dealings with staff. "Long journey ahead," he said cheerfully. "Off to boarding school for this one. Hope to be back by morning, if the roads stay open." The barstaff said nothing, but watched the two Landgraab males as they walked into the dark night.

I think that Malcolm is smarter than his father gives him credit for.  He'll save his mother. <<fingers crossed>>
