Oh, this was quite the interview ! Such charm he has . I think I'm going to read all the interviews again . Just to make sure I didn't miss a little something of importance . There's too many fingers being pointed at Gobias , it can't be this easy . I just wonder ......   This was a great update !   ;D

I also don't trust the old lady... though Gobias is looking more and more possible too.

Indeed, that old lady is mighty suspicious. Although based on Nadrena's interview Gobias looks suspicious too.

Any guy wearing ducky pyjamas and bunny slippers has just got to be suspicious!  But Conrad was ready to point the finger and one may wonder why he "doth protest too much".  Seriously waiting for the next update.

I will be the arbitrary contrary opinion and say the saboteur is.... Schipperke. Because you'd never expect that, would you?  :P

"Well," she said, "most of us here are wanting to make a name for ourselves, you know.  I'm sure that's a large part of why we came, because a big important project like this can make a career.  So maybe it's someone who doesn't need the career boost that this job can bring - someone who is already established, at the top of his field."

An interesting idea.  I was thinking about that when she added, "Of course, it would have to be someone who had a way of ensuring his own survival when the water became unusable."

"Me?"  She laughed bitterly.  "I'm not important enough to be first in line for one of the spirit capsules.  And all the Death Flowers so far seem to be going into Gobias's pocket.  Draw your own conclusions."

Why is she the only one that have the candidate of 'the saboteur'?
Anyway does it not sound like she is trying to make Ben suspecting 'the boss' and reverting the suspicion from herself?

If I have to guess, my guess Nadrena is the saboteur. Though to be sure we have see the next update problem flows.

I appreciate the interest in the story, and I'm going to ask you to please keep your guesses/deductions/speculations to yourself from this point on.  We are getting close to learning the identity of the saboteur and everything else about the burning water situation.  When all is revealed, then will be the time to say "I knew it!"

Thanks.  :)

To Catch a Saboteur, Part V

Diary Entry

I hurried over to see what Dr Plett had been pointing at outside the building, and saw Kaila Swift running away from the building as fast as she could go in her high heels.

I dashed after her and brought her back.

Kaila was screaming, "I can't take any more!  It's too much!  When the rest of the water is burned up, we're all going to die!  I don't want to die here in the desert, far away from my friends and my lovely island home.  Please let me go!"  She collapsed in tears.

Gobias caught my eye.  "You see the situation.  We're all close to the breaking point.  I'll do what I can to calm her down, but I hope you're close to finding the saboteur because the next time someone breaks down I may not be able to help."   He turned to Kaila Swift and spoke softly and gently, "Kaila, you've been under enormous pressure, as have we all.  But we need you here.  Please, just give Mr Oliver a little more time to find the saboteur.  I'm sure he'll have answers for us soon.  Now, why don't you and I have a nice game of chess?  I've been studying the Ruy Lopez opening, and I think I might just have a chance at winning this time!"  He led her over to the chess table and they started their game.

Gobias had managed to calm Kaila Swift for the moment, but her breakdown made me realize that time was running out.  If I didn't find the saboteur soon, the team would be beyond salvaging.  I went in search of the final scientist, Naomi Nita, and found her working out in front of the television.

I introduced myself and complimented her on her dedication to fitness.

She grinned at me.  "Well, Mr Astronaut, a person's got to find some way to deal with the stress of being locked up in this bug-house.  We're all this close" (holding her fingers a millimetre apart) "to being like Kaila.  Poor Kaila - can you blame her?  Far away from home, used to being surrounded by water, stuck here in the middle of the desert and facing death by dehydration.  Not pretty."

I asked how she was coping with the stress.

"Me?  I live right here in Lucky Palms.  I'm used to desert scenery.  Besides," she said grimly, "my home is just a few blocks from here.  And when I make up my mind to go, neither Gobias nor anyone else will be able to stop me."

I believed her.  There was a strength of mind as well as body in this young woman.

Before I could ask if she suspected anyone in particular of the sabotage, she preempted me by saying, "So, Mr Astronaut, I sure hope you figure this out soon.  As to whether I suspect anyone in particular, I'm afraid I have to say no."  Seeing the look on my face, she grinned again.  "What, did I surprise the great investigator?  This may come as a revelation to you, but we Scientists do occasionally talk to one another.  I know Conrad told you about his spirit capsule and Zeb made sure you're aware of his big contribution to Sim University.  When it comes to suspicions, none of us trusts anyone else any more.  But I know that nobody has any concrete proof of their suspicions."

It seemed that Naomi Nita had just taken charge of the interview, but I was content to listen as she continued, "As for how the water was caused to burn, I'm not sure I agree with the prevailing theory about volatile hydrocarbons."

She didn't?

"No," she said.  "I may be the youngest member of this team, but I'm a good Scientist.  Did you know that trace amounts of the adulterant were recovered?  I see you didn't know that.  A minuscule quantity, just enough for one slide.  I was examining the slide under the microscope, and I saw something familiar-looking."

I asked what she had seen.

"That's just it!" she exclaimed.  "I couldn't recall where I had seen that particular molecular pattern before.  My next step would have been to compare the slide to known molecular patterns, to try to identify it. But then the slide conveniently went missing.  I've been racking my brain trying to remember where I might have seen that pattern, but it's no use.  Without the slide for comparison, it's a dead end.

"Speaking of dead ends, Mr Astronaut, what d'ya reckon?  Are you any closer to finding the saboteur, or are we all on the fast track to a dry and dusty grave?"

I decided I liked Naomi Nita.  I liked her a lot.  She was easily the most down-to-earth of the Scientists, and she seemed very smart too.  I told her that I thought I was close to having the answer, and I hoped it was true.  I told her she had been a big help and handed her a gift box.

"Prezzies!" she exclaimed, "aw, Mr Astronaut, you shouldn't have.  But it's so long since anyone gave me a gift, I'll take what I can get."  She looked in the box.

"Well, aren't you the clever one!" she said.  "How did you know I've been dying to have one of these?  Of course, it will have to keep until I'm home in my own kitchen.  And you realize, you've just given me one more reason to want to go home?"  Suddenly the humour left her eyes and she said seriously, "This is part of your plan to identify the saboteur, isn't it?  Yes.  I think I understand what you're doing.  It's the scientific method, really - your own experiment.  Am I right?"

I didn't doubt that she had figured out what I was doing.  I begged her to be quiet, just a little longer.  I told her I had a phone call or two to make, and then I'd be ready to meet with everyone.

She went off to ask Gobias to get everyone to assemble in the recreation room while I found a quiet place to make my calls.

I think it's really interesting how Ben looks like both Agnes and Mr. Payne. He's obviously a Crumplebottom child, yet his expressions remind me so much of the famed man in grey.  :D
