Issues with Crashing on Saving
« on: December 24, 2012, 04:22:55 PM »
I've tried to do two games in Moonlight Falls, which is currently my favourite looking of the towns - however, both times after playing for about a week ingame time, they crash on saving. Any ideas? I've tried this both with and without mods, and the mods I used were Nraas' Errortrap and Overwatch. It's the only town that crashes on saving.

Are both of the files new or have you been using them for awhile?

Both new - One I managed to save after the first 2 ingame days, came back to it the next real life day and it crashed when I tried to save again. The Second crashed when I first tried to save it after about 7 ingame days.

Well, try starting a brand new third game and let's see if the same thing happens.  If it does, then you've got an issue with the mechanics of the game rather than a corrupted file.  And if that's the case, we'll move this topic to the Technical Help board.

Tried a brand new game in Riverview with the same starting character as one of the previous games. Well into week 2 and hasn't broken.

So I've confirmed it's not a problem with other towns - when I get a spare moment over the next few days of festivities I'll see if I can race through another Moonlight Falls game and see if it still has issues.

I think I might have solved it. It's one of two things, and while I'm not certain which it is, I'm doing both currently so fingers crossed I'll be able to sort it out.

1. I have it full screen and I tab out a lot. At one point on a different legacy I was playing it crashed when I tried to tab back in, and I noticed that Moonlight Falls is laggier than the other towns, and possibly was lagging more whenever I tabbed out then back in.
1a. I have a game in Lunar Lakes, which is a smaller town than most with less buildings in it, and that has little to no lag. Could be my laptop not being quite up to spec.
2. The riverview game I was saving every two to three days. The new game I made to test Moonlight Falls I saved every 2 days, and it's got to week 2 now without crashing on saving.

So my guess is that Moonlight Falls is laggier than most on my computer due to being very large,  my tendency to tab in and out of the game all the time was causing issues, and I wasn't saving often enough. Not sure why the latter might be causing the crashes, but it seems to have sorted it.

So probably would be best to move this to technical issues... While the specific town is playing a large part in this, it's more technical rather than town related.

Next step for me - finding a nice small sized map town to play on! :D

Edit: Spoke too soon. Did the same crash on my Lunar Lakes game on the morning of Thursday week 1. No idea what's going on now. The cursor continues doing its loading spin, but the middle icon saying "Saving" freezes, and then I have to Ctrl+Alt+Del to get the task manager up to quit out (can't even do Ctrl+Shift+Esc). Going to wait until I have better internet and try reinstalling everything sims related.

Try playing it in windowed mode. You can set it so that it's pretty large, but it does make a difference.

Had a quick go with windowed mode, and other than the resolution really irritating me because it was slightly squashed, the game ran a lot smoother. Have also installed Twallan's Saver mod so as to hopefully not have issues with crashes due to not saving frequently enough, or so that if it does crash I don't lose as much.

Going to see how it goes, but it's looking a lot better in windowed. Will have to look into how to specify specific resolutions.

Thanks for the advice and sounding board, Pam!  :)

I have been having a big problem with my lifestate dynasty saving. After playing the same two days eight times I noticed that the problem seemed to occur after using the mirror and dresser that I had. So I deleted and replaced the mirror and dresser and it is saving fine now.
Of course if it is several files then it probably isn't that I just wanted to throw that possiblity out there.

Do you have any CC or store stuff that could be causing a problem.

There are several resolution settings.  Just keep fiddling with them until it looks right. This isn't a challenge file, is it?

No CC, store stuff possibly... but the mirror dresser thing could be what is causing it. The games where I tested characters only had the normal vanilla dressers, and the new game I have have the mirror/dresser. I'll test it out.

Pam: They were all going to be starting an immortal dynasty. Tried two different characters to see if that was the issue, didn't work. The new game is my Random Legacy game, and I'm avoiding putting in the dresser/mirror objects for now. With regards to resolution, the issue is I'm on a 1366x768 monitor, am wanting slightly smaller in the y dimension, and the only one is 800x600 which is too small.
