Death by hotdog
« on: December 12, 2012, 05:50:21 AM »
Has anybody else had any deaths from eating contests? It's happened to me a couple of times, not my sims but others taking part, I just started a new game and first day of the summer festival poor Travis McDermott nearly starved to death while stuffing his face.

He only lived because I cheated with master controller and switched house and dragged his hunger bar up. Last time it happened to Sherman Bagley and I tried the max motives with master controller but it was too slow.

From what I understand instead of it filling them up and making them stuffed at one point it will lower their hunger so if they were low to start with they die, i'd much rather they got stuffed and maybe a bit podgy than drop dead, I know I interferred with Travis but as he's a child would he have actually starved? maybe the social would have taken him away from his parents if he didn't actually die for neglect, perhaps I should have waited to find out.

One things for sure any of my challenge or dynasty sims wont be going near eating competitions.

I'm no expert on certain game mechanics (cough SP cough), but I'm fairly sure Travis would've died. I think the protection thing (ie Social Worker instead of Grimmy) only really kicks in to the active household.

I'm personally afraid to enter another hotdog eating competition! Tried it once with a hungry sim and she died of starvation, tried it two more times with a half to full hunger bar and my sims threw up two hours later from eating  ::)

If I see that happen to a kid, I will reset him. Poor little guy.
None of my sims have died, but I have seen sims with a red hungry bar while eating.

I think it is an unwelcome glitch that I have not experienced yet (I've only had my sims enter a hot dog eating contest once, to be fair). It needs to be fixed in a patch because it isn't great...

It happened in one of my games.  In AP town.  A townie, don't know who she was, had the hungry sign over her head when she started to eat.  I figured it would leave as she ate the hotdogs, but all of a sudden she drops to the ground and the sounds that preceeds Grim showing up happened.  She died and it was sad really; EA should have it set that if they are in an eating contest they don't starve to death.

My sims have participated in several eating contests, hot dogs and pie.  I always make sure that they are at least half full before they start.  They end up with the stuffed moodlet afterwards.
One time one of my sims got away from me and went to take part just after he had eaten.  He had a full bar and before I realized it he was chowing down on the hotdogs.  Needless to say, he was sick afterwards, dashing off to the bathroom to throw up.

I keep an eye on them and if it looks as if they are going to stay with the hunger sign and I get concerned, I just stop them from eating and have them eat a snack from their inventory.  I always have some fruit and also meal bars that I pick up from traveling.  I have placed in all of my sims, especially the kids, as soon as I can some shower cans for hygiene and meal bars.

I agree with the idea that no child would be allowed to die, adults yes, kids no.

What gets me is that once in SV my sim went to the library.  There was a sim, NPC or townie, not sure, who was stuck on a wall ledge.  I checked back that night and he was still there.  The next day he was there, the signs of hunger and sleep over his head, but yet he was alive and screaming away.  I had to leave and checked at the end of the day and he was there yellng away and waving his arms.  The next day he was gone, so two days and nights at least suck on that ledge.

I don't know how to free him, so I just had to leave him there.

You could have hovered over him with your mouse, found out his name, and did a resetsim on him.

Thanks, I now know what to do, I hated for to have died when she (hot dogs) shouldn't have.  The man on the ledge I felt so sorry for him; I had to stay away so I couldn't hear his yelling.  I knew it was mad yellilng, but he was still stuck and a needless death.

That glitch happened to me too, which is really weird. I hope they fix it soon. I giggled at the thread title by the way. Creative.

P.S. If you have Master Controller, you don't have to get into his active house to get max his need bars:
1) Click on the sim
2) Choose Nraas
3) Choose Master Controller
4) Click on Intermediate
5) Select "Max Motives"
Instantly maxes the sim's need bars. It's very helpful, especially for parties. :) It might be my bad luck but a sim almost always dies in my parties, for one reason or another. You'd think they'd die after the party, but no, they have to haunt my sims!

This happened to me too, and I was very puzzled!  I mostly play with needs set to static, but I'd just decided to pay the game "straight" so to speak, and my Sim was hungry (but not even seriously hungry) and she was at the festival site, so I thought, perfect, let's enter the eating contest and that will fill her up!

Instead, she starved to death mid-contest!  I was quite shocked!

(I didn't reset her, though, because I was just testing out playing this way, and I wanted to see what would happen.  soon after, her mom got the opportunity to revive her, so now she is a ghost!)

But it makes more sense that it is a glitch, because I couldn't figure out how she'd go from just a bit hungry to starved to death so quickly!

So here's the thing with this.
There have been two main arguments for this occurring.

1) It's a glitch that EA has left in the game for reasons unknown.
2) It's TOOOOTALLY INTENTIONAL; the Sim is actually choking and they didn't have a way to represent this other than the hunger bar going down.

One way or the other, it's irritating how often it occurs if it *is* meant to be intentional.  It should not be that easy to die, man.

I've looked at it and it seems that the game lowers their hunger bar before they eat however if your sim has the very hungry moodlet they will dye from it. This is how I've been seeing it.

I'm fairly certain it was intentional, the same way the jelly beans in SN have a chance of killing your sims. Eating contests have a small chance of killing your sims as well.

And that is why I cheat and get my sims a death flower at soon as I start a game with them.  No accidental death for them before I have the next generation up and living, with their own death flower backup.
I am mean enough that when the next generation has an offspring that is at child level that I take away their flower, but before then mom and dad will have a flower to keep them around to see the grandbaby being born.

I have been lucky, so far, that none of my sims have died from anything other than old age.  They have participated in several hotdog and pie eating contests and so far no harmful affects other than being sick from too much food.  I am sure that there will be a time when one of my sims meets the Grim Reeper and hands him a flower after too much food, though.

It's happen too in my game! My homeless sims is dead when participating those hotdog contest while he has "Very Hungry" moodlet. The bad things that I haven't save that time from the beginning and then my sims is gone for good  :'(
