You also can't have any items that would normally go into a bathroom in the same room as the door or it won't allow it.

Congrats to SimBlip on winning? Can't wait to hear what Chuckles has to say about getting 100%.
I had a similar strategy (well actually no strategy but I caught on to things) to others with using elixirs except I never got a motive mobile. I used invigorating elixirs for sleep, shower in a can for hygiene, high quality dried food for hunger and just went to the toilet whenever I needed.

I'm still kicking myself because I never thought of the wish enhancement elixir. I didn't know that about the wall-mounted speaker, either.

I also had an idea to use Kleptomania in order to steal the objects that Challenge Man could upgrade, but it didn't really work because: A) Half the time I forgot to go out at night and B) He usually stole stuff like window curtains or something.

As for the 100% upgrade thing, why is the alien thing not supposed to be upgradeable for this challenge?

There is no 100% for this challenge.  I talked to Chuckles and her idea wouldn't have worked because the base game is bugged with a patch.  You cannot legally get a UFO in the game as the only two ways to get it are move in an alien (not allowed for challenge), enscorcel alien (not allowed for challenge or buydebug (not allowed for challenge).   UFOs left on lots can only be upgraded by witches and all upgrades done via spell don't count in the handiness skill journal.  And UFOs are not able to be stolen no matter where they're at.   If you invite an alien over they won't park in a parking space.

Oh, that makes sense. I was thinking you might be able to upgrade the UFOs if they were parked, but if only witches can do it than it obviously wouldn't go towards Handiness.

I had Tim move into an empty block in Twinbrook. He took a sleeping bag, an mp3 player and a pile of tomatoes to China on day 1 (after taking a class in handiness). After a quick visit to the home base where he collected a nice number of books and a portable radio, he made a quick trip and bought an incense burner and a fortune cookie machine, then he went to the scholars garden where he worked on the toilet and sink with occasional trips to the academy next door for a shower. He slept at the garden and had the portable radio playing all his waking hours as well as the incense burning whenever he was indoors.
When he came home, he joined the firefighting career and stayed at the fire station where he worked on all the upgrades there to get the unique ones. Again, all the time, he had the radio going and the incense burning. With all the upgrading, he was able to progress to level 5 in a short time. With his pay, bonuses and the money he got for selling the China books, he quickly got his LTW of swimming in cash. Once he had that, he bought the motive mobile and moved into the lot in Twinbrook with the beautiful vista bonus (can't think of the name). He demolished the house (who needs to run up and down all those stairs?) and built a large room. With the addition of a fireplace, a couple of decorator items, the incense burner and the radio, he always had his happiness bar full. So he bought a couple of umbrellas and placed one on the ground and proceeded to upgrade that one umbrella. When he needed a boost, he would take a ride somewhere, well actually, he really only needed to start going somewhere then return home to the umbrella.
So that's how he lived. He's other holidays were taken in France where he upgraded the nectar machines and the doorbell at the base camp and then he just upgraded the umbrella at the base camp (with the fire lit, his radio on and two incense burners)
When back at home, he just bought the things he couldn't upgrade at the fire station or on holidays. He just upgraded them and then sold them.

I was happy with how I did. I was particularly pleased with discovering the umbrella while practicing. He got enough happiness points after the motive mobile to buy the food replicator, but we didn't get the teleporter.
I had a few tricks I used. I had him get the steel bladder reward and I kept a heap of fruit in his inventory. That way, when he got hungry, it was quick to just eat an apple and continue working. By doing that and having the steel bladder, he was able to go several extra hours before he had to take that walk outside to the motive mobile.

I also considered making my Sim a vampire, but then I realized Genies have all the benefits of a vampire plus they don't have to worry about the weather.  :P

Genies have all of the same benefits as vampires?

I made my Sim a klepto to see if she could steal a parked UFO but obviously it didn't pan out. Should've gone with a different trait that could've got me the LTR points for the teleporter (I was 10,000 short at the end I think)

One thing I'm curious about is that I got 90% for all but three upgrades but others got 91%. Is this because the teleporter is worth more than the replicator or is it random?

It's random based on how many EPs/SPs you have.

I clean forgot about the wish enhancing serum. I was almost in the same mindset as last year, only I didn't worry about getting level 3 visa, because the travel days were set, and the umbrella was the key, not the doorbells.

If I had remembered the wish enhancing serum, I may have saved a small amount of time. I made my sim a vampire, so that she got wishes to go inside for every hour she was outside; and regular wishes to drink plasma juice (which she never finished all at once - a tip I gleaned from last year or the year before).

I figured the difference this year between the top competitors was going to be the time in between upgrades, and time wasted on non-upgrading activities. So I made sure of little things
- travelling the direction that put the car on the same side of the road as my sim, so that she didn't have to run across the road when she got out;
- putting my inside umbrella and my outside umbrella as close together as possible without route tantrums, and as close to the side-walk as possible;
- taking lots of half-drunk plasma juice with me on my trips;
- getting the prepared traveller LTR meant less hours wasted from travel, since you arrive at 8am, you could waste 24hrs if you didn't have it;
- working on the same umbrella for as long as possible, saving on walking time.

As for wishes to get the food replicator and the teleporter, I have started to learn about what wishes get triggered for what sims, and when. I made sure I got my sim's funds down below $5k to start with (by buying upgradable items with unique upgrades), because that meant that she would later get the wish to have $5k (swimming in cash LTW). Once you complete that, the 10k, 20k, and 30k wishes fire, so making sure not to overdo it each time ensures that you get to fulfil all those wishes. If you end up with more cash than you need, it's easy to buy something and put it in family inventory and then sell it after you've locked in the next wish. Next, buying a property helped, too. After that, they get the following 'own 3 venues', 'own 5 venues' and 'own 7 venues' (and I think maybe 'own 9 venues') wishes at regular intervals in the game. Cancelling wishes that appear that you have no intention of promising also helps to ensure that the ones you do want come up. Keeping my sim perfectly elated was pretty easy - making the upgrade area beautifully decorated for a +40 with dragon vases (free store content), loves the outdoors and loner traits, and the beautiful vista bonus.

As Rica already mentioned, the 100% was not, unfortunately achievable. When I realised that theoretically it could work if I did a reinstall without seasons (since the karaoke machine had the same time as the umbrella), I checked an old version of the game code to see if the new upgrades weren't on there. They weren't, but, I hadn't accounted for the patch, which adds the new ones. As it was, it wasn't worth the wasted time, because the karaoke machine is not portable, and you can't interact with the karaoke machine in the private venue (placed in holiday worlds) once it closes (I tried - I locked my sim in there by placing lots of gnomes in the way, dragged from inventory). So basically you waste all those hours until it opens again. Not only that, the only place to put it in China is miles from the road, and it took my sim hours to run to the road and back. So, I nixed that idea, and kept with the 94% - even though, as a completionist, it killed me.

Legally you had no choice though so that should have at least helped some right?

Naturally :) I'd have been really unhappy if I'd have gotten as far as a full reinstall and patch though, only to find out that it was the patch that ruined it. So glad I tested the holiday portion of the strategy first!!!

It is so good to read everybody's strategy. Mine wasn't that far off. I found out about the umbrella's (the hard part maybe) and I tried to figure out a way that my sim didn't need to sleep (the easier part probably ;)). I thought that was possible maybe through elixirs, but that would be very time consuming I think and I thought it wasn't worth it. I did use the wish enhancement serum right before completing the LTW and some other big wishes. I have never used the Motive Mobile before.

So by using that you sim doesn't have to sleep?

I am also curious where everybody got their money from and which world you chose?
Problem? Don't panic! There is always a solution. You just have to find it  :D

All your sim has to do is enter the motive mobile, not even go anywhere (you have to tell them to go somewhere, then cancel) and all their motives fill right up.
