I agree with the recommendation for Inventors to still register at City Hall as self-employed just to have those nice wishes fire. You can never have too many happiness points.

Okay, with my inventor, when he invented a time machine, the city gave him a display ribbon of Genius that another non-skill career inventor never got, so I guess there are some benefits.

The Self employment gives you awards from city hall and cash bonuses in some of the levels.  I noticed with my 2 sculptor sims that I got more opportunities to sculpting than when I wasn't self employed.

Yeah, that makes total sense because there are three types of opportunities: skill, career and special. If you're unemployed, then you'll only be receiving two types of opportunities. A lot of opportunities provide an absolute killer skill bonus too, so it's well worth someone's time to do them. Getting from skill level 9 to the cap in almost any skill takes a concentrated effort. To my amazement recently I had a sculptor go from just hitting lvl 9 to maxing the skill from completing one sculpting career opportunity. Hello Topiaries!
