Self-employed vs. Unemployed
« on: June 25, 2010, 07:42:41 PM »
I started my first self-employed sim today (a writer), and after a week, I started wondering...what's the point?  Are there any benefits from a self-employed career besides a new title each level?  I am hoping that there were some benefits out there that players might have discovered, otherwise it seems that the self-employed careers are just unemployed careers with titles.

I was wondering the same thing.  I know that you get little "awards" after you make so much money or sell so many items (this is where it gets tricky, someone would have to test to see at which item number or dollar amount your sim gets the last award), but beyond that I don't really know.  I mean, there's no stipend to raise.

Wishes. That's what seems to be the selling point for me. They seem to be consistent for hitting 4, 6, 8, and the 10th level of careers. So, we're not talking about gobs of happiness points, but why not? Every little bit helps.

Yeah as far as profits go, it's only for the bonuses as well.. so bonuses and wishes. It's enough to make it worth it :)

I think EA also brought it for self-esteem issues. Your Sims don't have to feel like a loser for being called unemployed when they are truly earning a living at something.  So now they can be self-employed and hold their heads high.

My guitarist is still "unemployed". Apparently, you can't call playing for tips "self-employment" (even if I have made over $400,000 from it).

Unfortunately you don't get a pension for just playing for tips, I wish that was the case though.  I made a pretty good pension from the music career and they can still play for tips and give autographs.

LOL my sim sold over 4,000,000 in nectar...   Wish it would have kept a numerical counter of how many levels he gained instead of just saying he got a raise....

Benefits?

Umm.... I think it is for the ambitious trait, you can gain a "raise" and such and have it count for that I think.

You also get a trophy.

Did he sell the nectar at the consignment store?

I think if you want to be an inventor and make as much money from it as possible you'd be better off being unemployed and just consigning your inventions, because you have to sell inventions via the inventory for it to count towards self-employed targets and inventions sell for much less via the inventory than in the consignment store.

But registering yourself as an Inventor wouldn't hurt you either.
