How to keep from getting bored
« on: June 24, 2010, 12:09:10 PM »
Rabid readers want to know, what do you do to keep from getting bored in the game, especially when playing a legacy?  My cure is simple.  I come in here, read notes, then go visit the guides.  There is always something I didn't know that I just HAD to try out!  Having said that, I'm off to practice snake charming!
What?  Grannies can't play games?
I speak perfect Nooblik, (and some Simlish)!

I was just going to say that Joria.  After going through the guide and the forum, I usually come up with new ideas and then play all day, until I can't see straight.  Something else I do is, I have sims that I created and have had since the very beginning of the sims3.  Usually I play one or two families in a neighborhood, so what I do, is go back to one I haven't played in a while and go through the other households and you would be amazed at what your sims have been doing when you don't play them.  The original sims might be gone, but they have heirs with kids, most families have moved around, so you have to hunt for them, but it is really interesting.  I have spent most of the afternoon going to each household and have found some interesting things they have done.  One time, I found a son of the Wolff's, he was living downtown and didn't have much money, unfortunately, he looked like his dad, but, I went ahead and gave him some money and moved him back to his, now gone parents big house, got him a job, fixed his looks some, and kept the generation going, it was pretty neat.  Have done the same thing with Alto's and Landgraab's.  Something different to do and fun.  I could go on, but not at the risk of boring ya to death, lol.
Is it true that cannibals don't eat clowns because they taste funny?

Dear Rabid Readers (love the alliteration),

My cure for boredom in the game is simple:  challenges!  It's always something different, usually something I haven't done before, and I'm competitive enough that that aspect of it appeals to me.  I keep hoping this is the challenge I'll win, even though I never even come close.

Also looking forward to the building contest.  It just may inspire me to build something better than my usual shack.

When I get bored, I try to build TV houses. You know, Simpsons, Full House, Seinfeld, Friends, The Cosby Show, House (his apartment), Family Guy, Leave it to Beaver, Kathy Griffin, the Amityville House...

Or I build houses of friends or houses I lived in. Usually, by the time I'm done, I'm too "over it" to actually play a family in it, but it IS fun to try and recreate things that, technically, can't exist proportionately in the game (and interesting to realize that many TV houses are IMPOSSIBLY laid out...ever tried to build a Simpsons house WITHOUT the never seen Rumpus Room? Because it's IMPOSSIBLE to make the house the right shape outside WITHOUT it!).

@SJ:

Some questions -

1. Are the houses playable at all?
2. Do you use any third party custom content when building them?
3. Do you upload them to the Exchange?

They sound interesting and some players (me) might enjoy trying them if they're playable and don't have any third party content.  :)

I haven't built as much in TS3, but in TS2 I used to do heaps of building.. I'd get plans for real houses online then try to sim them.
Haven't really got bored with TS3 yet. Too busy with challenges and learning new things from the expansion packs.

I built my own apartment once and my sim set the place on fire when he left the oven on before heading to work.

Always watch what actions you're cancelling... :)

To keep things interesting, I like to make character sims, like an agoraphobic, germaphobe, homeless, mad bomber, etc.  I set certain rules for each character and give them goals. For example the germaphobe has to shower frequently and is often washing or brushing their teeth. And they don't touch others if it can be avoided. If they do they must shower immediately. With ambitions, they'll now work to fill their home with hygienators. And their home reflects their personality - minimalist and white, no carpet and no decorations which can collect dust.

I'll also make people go against type - an unflirty hopeless romantic or a cowardly firefighter (still need to do this). Or give them something in the way of their ultimate goal. For example, I made a very large woman who was a hopeless romantic looking for true love. I made her flirt right away with every man she met and each rejection made her eat. Had her transform herself in order to be successful - she had to exercise and learn charisma.

I also use random events in my game to keep things exciting, like a company downsizing and laying off a sim who then can't find a job for a week.

1. Yes, I intentionally make them playable, which is why it's so hard to get them "right", if ya know what I mean.  :)
2. Not usually, unless it's something the game doesn't have (like the Simpsons single tiled curved archways). Even then, when I decide I'm going to share something, I usuallly rip the CC OUT of it so people will download it.
3. I used to for TS2, but I haven't uploaded anything to TS3. In fact, I haven't built TV homes for TS3 in quite awhile.

Thanks for your interest. The Amityville Horror house (the real one), was recently posted for sale, so I've gotten to see some new interior pictures of it (and the game has everything I need for it, so no CC). When I get some time, I'll rebuild it for TS3 and upload it. And of course, start a thread so you know where to find it!  :D

Like a lot of others have already said, I find this site a real boost to the possibilities. It always stokes my imagination. I  came here for a quite a while before I signed up.

As you can probably tell by my name I don't go the usual route for Sims. I love quirky Sims and I find the things they get up to on their own really amusing. My current project is taking over Poker Flats (the small island in Twinbrook) by Sims I've created. Six out of the seven houses there are now occupied by Sims I've created and I want to see how many of them interact. I'll switch back and forth between them. I also like to get into my library of Sims I've made and just fill up the town with them. I just plop them into households at random and then I go back later and see what they have been up to. I find it amazing to see what they do when I'm not looking over their shoulder.

I try zany tactics I've never done before.  Have a baby with every Sim in town (very amusing), build a maze house with 8 Sims and one toilet, things like that.  Building always brings me back too.

I roleplay.
Before Ambitions I got bored and started thinking about farmer and fisherman sims.
My favourite one so far is my hobo sim. It's fun to keep her poor and still survive on the charity of her fellow sim.

Something that applies to me in a lot of games is that I love to play the beginning of a "challenge". For most games, that's just the beginning of the game, but for Sims, it's the legacy challenge. I think I now have 4 or 5 legacies, and the furthest I've gone on one is a child sim in the third generation.
