How to keep from getting bored

I honestly never get bored when playing this could be because I have very little real time to play. The most generations I have got to is twenty two. This was not by choice,I had just gotten the game and it was only my second time playing and I didn't know you could change households so I just kept on playing my little family.  My first game only went three generations and that was without leaving the house.
The only time I find things slightly frustrating is waiting for people to age up,especially children and teens,but now there is a lot more for them to do in game so that helps.
I have recently discovered building which I am not very good at but I am enjoying being creative.

I guess to me, it is fascinating to switch households and see how much trouble your sims get themselves into while you are gone.   I have had them get jobs, get married, have kids, all on their own, which I find hilarious.  So maybe that is why I switch so much.  As soon as you leave a certain household, they are out of there.  I sometimes find them in their formal clothes at the local lounge, having a blast and babysitter is watching the kids.  I guess that is what keeps it interesting.  I have never turned off aging or story progression since I have had the game.

Thank you Salty my building skills have improved so much since my first legacy house. For many generations my Sims lived in a shack with three bedrooms one bathroom a kitchen/dining room and a skill room. There was no wallpaper and the flooring was really ugly. For some reason I never decorated or added anymore rooms after the first generation.

I have recently stated using edit town quite a lot you are right it is fun to see what they get up to while you are gone. I have been playing Marian T stranger in a Sim land challenge which involves moving homes and has different coloured Sims which is just perfect to me.

Would you believe I've never switched active households?  I get invested in the Sims I play and would hate to switch and come back only to find they've completely undone everything I set up for them.  Or married Sims not of my choosing.   

When I do "switch" Sims, I start a new file.  I don't think I've ever played an off-the-rack Sim.  I always create (or recreate/tweak) one of my own.

I haven't gotten overly bored yet (my definition of "overly bored" is "ready to shelve the game for an extended period").  I've been playing Challenges a lot recently and those always seem to have interesting, new ways to explore content.  They keep the game fresh.  I also have Generations yet to install; I own it, but haven't installed it.  I'm saving it for when I need something entirely new.  I assume many of you are looking to Pets for the same reason.  Since Pets holds no fascination for me whatsoever , perhaps I'll install Gen when you install Pets.  Then we'll all have something new to work with!

I don't think I've ever played an off-the-rack Sim.  I always create (or recreate/tweak) one of my own.

I often play one of the townies. I put my created sim in a house and wait till the townie can meet her. In Bridgeport there are a lot of single men who have traits that match hers, or Zodiac signs that do. So it's fun to have them run around town looking for her. She's maxed in guitar, piano, charisma and logic, and has the "Master of Seduction" lifetime reward.

I switch between games, Legacy, Dynasty, Random Pointless Game etc. although lately I've been putting off the redecoration of my Dynasty House so I'm doing my Legacy which I'm having to do a new house because the old one got laggy. I find that just a new house often makes some games more enjoyable, it's not so much that the sims get boring, most of the time new sims are added and old ones die, if you don't rebuild a house every now and then it gets a bit repetative, I find anyway. Some who read my Legacy will perhaps have noticed that I slow down after a while and rebuild then suddenly perk up again, I've noticed it so I think it helps.

I agree, that's why I buy up the bars and change a few things. I may have to change the town's name since my sim owns practically everything!

I thought about it a bit and realized that, in a sense, I have played a few off-the-rack Sims.  Occasionally I've had Sims who met and married townies, at which point, the townie came under my control.  I don't think I've ever allowed them to move in without a personality and/or physical tweaking, though. 

The only time I played a true, off-the-rack Sim was during the Random Challenge earlier this year, where it was forbidden to tweak anything.  For me, the prospect of buying off-the-rack was truly frightening!  Fortunately, in that Challenge, I got lucky.  Both the Sims were easy to work, having delightful personalities and only one or two difficult traits.  I'm sure it could have been much worse.

I've played many townies because they ask my sim to move-in when they become good friends. This has led to some interesting challenges. The last one was Renee Littler, and I found out when my sim moved in, that Renee's husband Rueben is the father of Tiara Angelista. The number in the family was too big, so after awhile my sim moved back out.
