There is a 50% chance of learning a new type of Snowman when building one. Traits determine the Snowmen you can make. Aside from Common, there are five other types:

Tragic Clown Snowman - Grumpy, Hates the Outdoors - also having a low mood (-40)
Hockey Snowman - Athletic, Loves the Outdoors - also having an ice skating rink on the lot.
Evil Snowman  - Daredevil, Evil, Mean-Spirited, Hot-Headed, Pyromaniac (yes the hidden trait)
Reaper - Unlucky, Evil and having tombs/urns on the lot or in the inventory  - part time job at mausoleum as well (harder to learn)
Alien - Insane, Computer Whiz (harder to learn)

About the Tragic Clown snowman: I assume your sim must be in a low mood? I first read it like your sim will get that low mood by having that snowman nearby.

Something else: I assume they eventually will melt? The reason I ask is because Ice Sculptures made by sims with the right Skill Challenge unlocked won't melt.

They do melt, I imagine temperature plays a role. I only know that they degrade twice in quality then finally go to a puddle. Also, Sims angry with yours may destroy them out of spite (along with ice sculptures).

Apparently a job at the mausoleum can give you the reaper snowman too, so I added that to my previous post.

Edit: oh yeah the clown... -40 means quite a bit of red, so your net total of moodlets would put you that far in the negative.

I'm doing some experiments with Bob and Doug.  They're twins, with the traits Carl so kindly listed above, Grumpy, Evil, Insane, Loves the Outdoors and Athletic.  On Bob's 4th attempt at a snowman, he made this:

He had no negative moodlets, and was pretty chipper.  The problem with Insane, Evil sims is that they build the snowman, have a conversation with it, (or at least that's what it looks like) and then attack it.

Dang.  Poor Snowman.  Nothing like being destroyed by your creator.

After seeing that gigunta army of "traditional" snowmen, I felt kind of guilty when my Sim made a hockey snowman on her first try.

Mine made a hockey snowman first try as well!  I also felt kinda bad (I'm all, "well that was easy").  I made it one the festival lot so it had the ice rink, maybe that influenced it?

Mine was on my home lot, but my Sim is athletic, so I assumed that was why.

After making a couple of snowmen, a snowman gnome showed up.  He likes laying by the fire so far, lol.
Is it true that cannibals don't eat clowns because they taste funny?
