Indoor gardening?
« on: November 10, 2012, 10:12:10 PM »
I think I remember greenhouses on TS2, but nothing like it in TS3. Anyways, I had an outdoor hating sim move in with mine...only to find out that he was also a green thumb. I didn't even think it was possible to have that kind of trait combination on a sim. So....how is this green thumb going to garden if he's hating life every time he steps outside, and is getting constant wishes to stay inside?

If you have Supernatural, there are an assortment of indoor planters. It also means you can't plant trees, but I don't think your green thumb will mind.

If you have the room you can also make an indoor garden.  I moved my sim into a house that had one.  It didn't have a foundation, so that is why they could do it, probably.

Anyhow, I can think of three ways, one is to just take up a section of the floor inside and plant your garden.  you will have to water by hand as I don't think the sprinklers would work and you would spend the whole day mopping up unless you create enough for the water to spread.
If you have the garden already out side, I would think you could build walls around the garden and then add windows that fit from top to bottom, no flooring except the dirt.  Or put in arches to give easy access yet you sim will feel like he is inside.  At least I think he will feel that way, I have never tried it. Just make sure you have plenty of room for the sprinklers.
Last, and the only guarrentee that I know will work, is to use the cheats to modify that trait.

Hopes that helps.  Good luck

I've heard there will be a new Greenhouse Venue at the store soon. With it comes the glass roof tops, etc. for making greenhouses.

And if all else fails, your Sim will just have to suffer being outdoors while gardening.  I'm currently playing a challenge where one of the traits has to be Hates the Outdoors, and the Sims have to live outdoors.  Other positive moodlets can make up for the drop in mood when your Sim is outside.

I'm reviving this thread, hoping to get some more specific information.

I'm only just now concerned about having indoor gardening.  I've read pieces on the Forum and even the official site forum that talk about making an indoor garden, but nothing that really tells me exactly how to do it.  I have the greenhouse venue installed, but I don't see anything in Build Mode that shows me how to make glass walls and ceilings.  If anyone has had success growing plants indoors, would you please tell me how it's done?

Here's what I did in my Life States Dynasty:

Built a room that was 9x6. The Regifted Window is 3 wide, so I could stick 2 on the shorter sides, and 3 on the longer sides. On the one side where I wanted the door, I used Window Schmindow to fill in the gaps (it's the single tile version of Regifted, and both are full length with no breaks).

Built a 2nd floor, and repeated with the Regifted Windows all the way around. Do not put a floor down. For the roof, use the Flat Roof. Don't forget to do wall coverings!

In buy mode, under roof decorations, you'll find the ceiling pieces. Arrange them however you like, when they're on the flat roof, the roof becomes invisible.

For the plants themselves, you can approach it three ways:
1) Put all non-tree plants in the planters, stick them inside. Lay down desired flooring. Put trees outside.
2) Put all non-tree plants in the planters, stick them inside. Lay down desired flooring, except in the spot you want the trees. Put trees inside (I usually just use MoveObjects On for this). Trees growing indoors would break the floor of the 2nd story. Using this method, I strangely didn't have the unfinished room moodlet.
3) Plant everything on the ground, don't put down any flooring. This will give you the unfinished room moodlet, but it's hardly a big deal. Again, MoveObjects On is a big help here.

Since you have the greenhouse, I assume you also have the SwiftGro gardening station? It will water everything inside the area at 7am and 7pm, regardless of planter use - contrast with the sprinklers that do not water anything in planters.

That's what I've done so far, anyway!

Do we need a second floor? or is that so the trees don't poke out?

I was wondering about the glass roof/ceiling tile deal, so excited to know they vanish.

Does this method stop them going dormant in the winter?

thanks (Also thanks to Pam for reviving the thread... I've being trying to get the green house to work with no luck!)

Yeah, the second floor's only purpose is to keep trees from poking out the top. If it's a matter of funds vs aesthetics, you can do a single story, trees can still grow there.

And yes, the method does stop them from going dormant in winter. The only dormancy issue I had is when I planted Life Fruit in the planters during winter (I think I got them stuck permanently because I had my fairy Bloom them).

I'm supposed to have the gardening station, but I've never used it and don't even know where to find it in Buy Mode.  :(

Thank you so much for the information, Shirin.

Use the second option in buy mode (select by function).  It is found in Plumbing Objects: Miscellaneous.  It is the first item in the catagory, the rest (in my game configuration) are hot tubs.
