Awesome tips about making money. Thanks to everyone who contributed. I'm going to play a new legacy by Pinstar's rules soon, so they will be very helpful. :)
Ugh finding my own husband was easier then this

I'll start off by explaining my scenario.

After my founder got married and the spouse moved in, I got about six thousand from 'gifts' and inventory junk. For some reason, the spouse's house didn't sell, or I didn't get the money from it. It's worth about 40 thousand.

Would it be against the legacy rules to use simolean (sp?) cheats to give me back this amount?

The spouse's house never sells.  You only get the gifts and whatever the spouse has in his/her personal inventory.  So, I would say using the money cheats would be against the rules.

It never sells? What do you mean?

Like, in the move-in panel, I checked the "sell house" button. Shouldn't I get money from that?  ???

You're talking about the window that comes up right after the wedding ceremony?  You choose which Sims will come live in your house (if there are more than one) and which will be the active household.  Where was the "sell house" button?

See the Sell Home button. Yay for Carl's guide for the screenie. Obviously this is for moving out, not moving a Sim in, but the left hand side is the same.

Ok, I see it.  Technically, I guess you're selling the house, but you don't get that money for it.  That box is actually grayed out, too, so it couldn't be unchecked either.  It's a little confusing, but you never get the value of the old house in your family funds.

Really? I've gotten money from the house in previous legacies.

So this means that if Sim 1 lives in a 500-thousand-simolean mansion but moves in with Sim 2 who lives in a (better) 500-simolean mansion, you lose 500-thousand Simoleans?

Well, now you're making me doubt myself.  Let me see if I can get someone else over here to help.

I found a thread from the Official Sims 3 forums with a ton of people complaining about it from three years ago. Most of them said it was a bug, and I think a few of them implied that they'd moved successfully.

I don't know how valid this is since it's from three years ago.

Have to agree with Pam and say that I never got money from selling houses when spouse move in. I didn't have too many Sims move in like that, but every time I was wondering the same - Sim living in large expencive house and move in with few thousands of simoleans they had in household funds at the point of moving.
This is the first time I ever heard of that.

Whenever I have had anyone move in be it a spouse or a friend I just get a few thousand Simoleans and whatever is in their inventory. Even moving Agnus in only gives about fifteen to twenty thousand to household funds and her house and furniture would sell for quite a bit more then that.

When I moved Hal Breckenridge in in my other legacy, I got 50,000 in funds... And I doubt that he has that much money at any point in the game.

You're confusing marrying a sim with putting sims together in houses yourself. If you marry a sim that sim will bring in a certain amount of money, not the total fond of the house. The only way to get the fond of a house is when you set a sim out of your house yourself and move it in your own sims house yourself. I assume that would be against those rules as well.
And so is cheating.

In fact it is quite likely that he did had that much money - don't know about that Sim particular, but several rich households start with 50.000 or 75.000 Simoleans, even in Sunset Valley. I think that in some other worlds, some households have even more than that (in Bridgeport and Hidden Springs I think).
