Tips for living as a homeless Sim
« on: October 31, 2012, 05:09:37 PM »
I'm playing a unofficial challenge(not from here) where I'm having a Sim live without a home and very little money, it's quite fun I found, but there are a few problems. Finding food and making money, in this challenge isn't easy. There is an upside, she is a witch and can conjure apples, she also has §1,967.00. The rules say the Sim can have no job, full or part time.  The goal is to have §20,000.00 unspent. I'm trying to max her in Alchemy, but it's kinda hard with no money to buy ingredients, she does have a collection helper though.

Tried this a while ago before my game grashed and burned. It is really simple: IN THE MAIN MENU activate "testingcheatsenabled true", and start a new game. In Edit Town, randomly place a 10x10 lot anywhere on the map. Build a 1x1 room. Return to game. Now select a sim or create one, then move him/her in. Start your game. Immediately in build mode, demolish the room. Now you go the Lifetime Happiness tab and Ctrl+click between the chest image and the points count until you have enough points to buy the "No Bills Ever" reward. Purchase it. Now enter the cheat screen and enter "familyfunds simsurname 0". Deactivate "testingcheatsenabled false". You should now be bill-free and broke. And your lot won't mean a thing to you, unless you utilize it. And any use of it would be cheating, unless you sleep on the ground (pass out). Now the challenge starts...

With a collection helper, you should be able to find mushrooms, gems, and insects to use, and you can harvest honey and beeswax at the elixir shop. Are you allowed to garden? You can also harvest wild plants.

I did a game like this quite a long time ago.  I'm not sure what rules you're playing by.  My game was before Ambitions, so there was no fire station for my Sim to sleep in.  I bought him a cheap tent from buydebug.  It was in Sunset Valley, so he slept in Central Park and used the showers at the gym.  At first he lived on apples harvested in the park, but once he had enough LTH points I bought him the LTR that allowed him to eat for free at the Diner and Bistro.  He owned the big Dynasty lot but didn't have anything on it and never went there, so bills weren't an issue.

It really was quite a while ago, so I'm trying to remember just what I did.  I think my main rule was that he couldn't buy anything other than the tent until he had completed his LTW.  I think his LTW was the one that requires the Sim to maximize Athletic and Logic, but probably most of the skill-based LTWs would work.  He spent his days playing chess in the park and jogging around town.  Once he had completed his LTW he could start earning money, so I bought him a guitar and got him playing for tips.  Eventually  he owned most of the town, which I think was the goal of the challenge I was playing.  But the part I enjoyed the most was when he was living in the park and owned nothing!

Good luck with your Sim.  Your question has made me remember how much I enjoyed playing a homeless Sim with no possessions.  I just may have to try this again.  :)

I've never tried this, but I have a suggestion.  I presume you have some sort of home lot.  Can you travel?

I suggest you collect metals, gems and meteors and then transfigure them on the carters table.  Tiberium is the most profitable, but, you will need to grow it for 24 - 48 hours on your home lot and it needs to be protected by a burglar alarm (mount it on a single section of wall).  Otherwise trensfigure gems into soulpiece and metals into better metals.  (See transfiguration page in "The Sims 3 Guide".

If you are truely homeless, this won't be possible.  Surely, it is not possible to have a completely homeless sim, or is this something available with an EP I don't own?

Personally, I always start a new sim on the smallest available empty lot.  Travel to China or France immediately, so I am home again before 9 am on day one.  I go, immediately on arrival at the vacation hostal, to the relics merchant and buy every gem and metal they have.  Return to the hostal and post for processing.  I repeat this on the second and third day.  I will sell smelted metals back to the merchant if I have to to buy more.  I collect what I can find and tomb raid between sleeping, eating and visiting the merchant.   I will always return home with enough smelted metal. cut gems, relics and meteors to transfigure at least 3 tiberium, or approximately 120k cash.  Allowing two days to grow my tiberium, I buy a very nice home, and furnish it well on Tuesday of week one.

@Wai: your sim technically owns a lot, but may not use it whatsoever. And if you set familyfunds to 0 at the beginning, travel is not possible. So the challenge is fundamentally: from homeless (can't use your lot) and flat broke ($0) to living a good life in some manner of definition (cash, possessions, whatever) without cheating. Personally I would even refrain from working until whatever final goal is achieved.

These are the rules.
HOMELESS CHALLENGE
Step One: Creating A Sim

Basics:
Create a Young Adult in CAS. You can customize their looks and favorites however you want. However, the Sim cannot be wearing any accessories or makeup. Their voice and favorites are also up to you.
Traits:
The five traits of your Sim are up to you, however you may not have the Kleptomaniac, Lucky, or Heavy Sleeper traits. Tip – Having the trait Loves The Outdoors will give your Sim a mood boost whenever they’re wandering the streets.
Lifetime Wish:
Take a look at the five options for a LTW. You can’t choose any career related wish. If there is more than one option that is not career-related, you can choose which one you want.

Step Two: Purchasing A Lot

Choosing Lot:
Move your Sim into whatever lot you would like. It doesn’t matter. However, it must be a blank lot with no house or anything built on it.
Decorating Lot:
In Build Mode, you are allowed to use the following however you like: Trees, Shrubs, Flowers, Rocks, Terrain Paint, Ponds, and Terrain Tools. In Build Mode, you are allowed to purchase one “Community Bench”. This is found in the Misc. category of Comfort. You are also allowed to purchase anything in the Plants category of Buy Mode.

Step Three: Being Homeless

Starting Up:
When you are done building, you must reduce your Sim’s funds to $35. You can do this by typing in this cheat: familyfunds familyname 35
Earning Money:
No one wants to hire a filthy Sim! You cannot get a full-time or part-time job. You are limited to the ways you can earn money. You can collect and sell gems, bugs, space rocks, and other collectables. You can sell fish you catch or food you harvest. However, you cannot sell anything that you put on your lot in Step Two.
Spending Money:
You are only allowed to purchase things you can store in your inventory, like a guitar or fire pit for example. You cannot purchase chairs for the fire pit if you choose to buy one.
Eating:
You are only allowed to eat fish or harvestables (whatever is in your Sim’s inventory). You can only eat your fish if it is cooked, so you can use a stove in someone’s house (or on a community lot if you can find one) to cook it. You can also mooch food off another Sim. Your Sim can’t eat in any restaurants, because you are not wanted there. Tip – Head over to Stoney Falls. There are bugs, rocks, and plants; perfect for the homeless Sim. :]
Gardening:
If you find a seed, you may plant it on your home lot. However, you may only plant seeds – you cannot plant a food (even though the game lets you).
Marrying/Moving In Sims:
You cannot marry or move in any Sims until you have completed the challenge. However, you can have a baby to make the challenge even harder.
Paying Bills:
Every few days a bill will appear in your mailbox. You are required to pay these bills, but they won’t be very much money.
Hygiene:
You are welcome to take a bath or shower at someone’s house – but this may get you kicked out. A better option is to have a shower at a community lot. Tip – the 28 Hour Wellness Gym has some bathroom facilities! If all else fails, your Sim can just wash their hands many many times.
Lifetime Rewards:
You can purchase any Lifetime Rewards you want, but you will only get points for the Lifetime Happiness points you haven’t spent at the end. Tip – don’t buy the Discount Diner, Office Hero, Vacationer, or Professional Slacker rewards, because you won’t be allowed to use them (until the challenge is completed).

Step Four: Completing The Challenge

If you have used any money cheats after Step Two, you are disqualified. You have completed the challenge when you have $20,000. You must have all the money in your Sim’s funds at one time; when you do this the challenge is over. If you would like to continue to play that Sim through their lifetime, all the restrictions are removed and you can then use anything in build or buy mode. If you want, you can also use this scoring:

+1 point per every 1,000 Lifetime Happiness point you have at the end.
+3 per friend, good friend, best friend, romantic interest, crush, or boyfriend/girlfriend you have at the end.
+1 per skill point you have.
+5 per skill you have maxed (level 10).
She can travel but she has to have the money for it. I did cheat to get her the collection helper and Inappropriate but in a Good Way. I bought her a broom before I lowered her money to §35.00. I put a lot that has alot of Life fruit and Death flowers. I sell the Life fruit for cash and keep the Death flowers. She sleeps at community lots.

This is an interesting challenge idea! Maybe I will work on this to relax from my dynasty. When it continually doesn't save I get very frustrated.

That challenge looks very interesting, I often start my sim as a teen on an empty plot, usually I just get a bike and a tent from buy debug but now with generations I get a sleeping bag instead. It's pretty hard trying to keep motives up and go to school but I enjoy the challenge of that.

First reward I usually get is inappropriate but in a good way, that way I can make use of other peoples houses without getting kicked out, handy if she goes home from school with somebody, and if friendly enough I ask to sleep over, don't even need a spare bed with the sleeping bag.

I actually find it more and more hard trying to stay poor in this game, not getting rich has become more of the challenge now. I think I might use these rules for my teenager it's always more fun when you have goals.

I've done something similar with an adventuring Sim to start her off with as much travel money as possible. I got her an empty lot, a sleeping bag, and some flame fruit stolen from a garden. If you need extra money you can dig through rubbish bins. Some especially rich Sims throw away SimLife Goggles!

Alice and Kev were my inspiration to play homeless Sims. My homeless legacy is in generation 3 so I'll share what I've learned.

1) Sims can easily live off the land by growing veggies/fruit and fishing. The these can be eaten or sold.
2) A sleeping bag is a homeless Sims best friend. They can use it to sleep anywhere.
3) Mooch trait lets them ask for food and money which comes in handy.
4) Pet + homeless family = big mistake! The whole family has fleas :o
5) The fire pit is great for roasting food and gives them the cozy fire moodlet.

This looks like an interesting challenge which I quite fancy trying.

However, can I just clarify:

Can I use my mailbox?  ie: may I write a book in the library or get metal smelted?
Can I use the base camp if/when I can afford to travel.
If I make it to get a final score, is there anywhere I can see how my score compares to others?
Can I consign items?

I believe you can do all of the above, writing a book would involve a skill not a job. According to this rules there is no ban on travel. You can use your mailbox, you just can't buy anything that you must place on the lot, which I broke, I bought a WA chest. You could always post your score here, I'd love to know how you made money and such. There is also no ban on Edit Town, so I put a few community lots to help my Sim out. The main rule is no money cheats or mood cheats, which I've followed even though I love cheats. I even cheated so I could have 2 lifetime rewards, so my lifetime happiness point total will exclude the ''free'' points. I'm bending the rules on some stuff, but I'm following the basic concept of the challenge.
We are of peace, always but this is war.
We are of peace, always.
We'll help build a resistance. We have to fight.
