Custom Railings?
« on: October 31, 2012, 04:09:43 PM »
I was looking around before as how to do this, but is there a glitch or cheat that allows you to make railings for stairs from fences? Or do you need a mod? I'm referring to railings that match, i.e. the railing with the Dozey Step Staircase matches th Playground Fence.

I've never found a way, and I wish there was a way to do it without mods. There are a few stair railings that have matching fences, but I dont think there is a way to extend a fence down the side of stairs.

Technically it is in fact very possible, but is quite a process to achieve. I'll have to write a guide on it (after a few refresher practice rounds!). My gallery is still messed up, so just like with my thread in houses and lots, I can't insert screenshots. But I'll write it and try to find another hosting spot that works for me. Give me a few days, work is crazy around month end, and I sleep like a rock once I get home, lol!

The only exception to this is outdoor stair ways like at the school in Sunset Valley or the big park. If you stairs are on sloped ground then you just don't use railings at all and instead just run your fence down the sloped ground at the edge of the stairs and it looks like the fence is the railing.

Unfortunately that only works for those outdoor ground level stairs.

That trick doesn't work for Going from one deck to a higher level deck (for example). But I'd be very interested in what Donatello eventually posts.

PolarBair is pretty much on the ball. Combine that with VERY meticulous planning and CFE, and literally anything is possible. Remember, if you have CFE false, everything you do to any level's elevation affects all levels above it equally in a straight vertical line.

The idea is to create a negative slope with stairs (down instead of up) in the floor below, before creating the level from which you ascend the intended stairs. Then create the level for the bottom of the stairs. Then level out the floor below. It should create the desired slope to build the railings on. Build the railings, then level out the floor beneath it. The railings should stay in position. Then create the floor for the top of the stairs and put in your stairs at the end. Then CFE true. All done.

Thanks for the help. I saw a video of this being done earlier, but it wasn't a tutorial.

Nice! I like this trick. I am so bookmarking this thread for future reference.

I think I found a glitch? with the Sims 3 store.

In the ultra lounge outdoor set, there are railings that match the protective fence, so I downloaded the set. There isn't said railing in the catalouge. Do you think they used CFE or I just don't have it?

If you try to add railings to the stairs, does it add a different type of railing?

If you mean auto-railings, the one that is there is the railing used on the 'altitude quantizer' stairs.

Hm. That is quite odd. My bet would be that EA just forgot to include the railing in the set. I doubt they would go into complex CFE just for a store set photo.

I thought so too. Maybe I'll try a reinstall.

Edit: It's called the 'Roundabout Railing'

Hmm, I'm having trouble getting the fence/railing to stay in position when I level out the the floor. The fence jumps back up with the rest of the floor.
