A Past on Pause - Chapter 1: Welcome to My Party(Left: Izzy // Right: Tanya)
“Now this is the way to spend a Saturday night.” Tanya purred as she leaned back in the bubbling hot tub. “Loud music, fresh nectar to drink, and a great party; just what I need after my week at work.”
Izzy readjusted her bathing suit top. “You’ve got that right, Tanya. There’s nothing like an indoor pool party to soak away the stress. I still can’t believe my agent hasn’t found a gig for me, I’m sick of doing sing-a-gram after sing-a-gram! I need to perform on stage for thousands!”
“It will happen” Tanya reassured her best friend, “You just need to wait for your big break.”
“I know, but I want to be a famous singer now, not years from now!” Izzy splashed her hands through the water in frustration.
“Hey, don’t wreck the hair! It took me hours to get it just right.”
“Sorry,” Izzy sighed, climbing out of the hot tub, “I’m getting a drink. What do you want?”
“Something fruity, I’m in the mood for something sweet. Speaking of which, I’ll be over there chatting with muscles.” Tanya slid from the hot tub and glided over to the dance floor.
Drink in hand, Izzy made her way around the room, schmoozing the local singles and making friends. After making a drink suggestion to one of her guests, Izzy surveyed the room. Clapping could just be heard above the music as the crowd showed appreciation to the mixologist for his nimble, heart-stopping mixing skills, and the DJ was playing the requested chart-topping pop hit. The smell of chlorinated salt water mixed with the flowers growing beside the pool wafted past Izzy’s nose as she watched the splashing contest happening in the pool. Further down the room, more guests had filled the spots in the hot tub vacated by her and Tanya.
Wait, what?! At the tables along the inside wall, placed there for guests to sit and chat or enjoy their drinks some guy was typing away on a laptop! How rude! This was a party, a social event by definition and this guy was just sitting there, by himself, being anti-social. Not at her party!
Marching gracefully with a sway in her hips across the tiles around the pool, Izzy constructed a tirade in her head. Boy was she going to give this guy a piece of her mind! A quick, hard tug on her arm set Izzy flying into the pool with a huge splash!
Sputtering, Izzy’s head surfaced and she caught a quick glimpse of Tanya’s laughing face before she got a face full of water. Livid, Izzy pulled herself from the water.
“How could you?! And after that ‘watch it, don’t wreck my hair’ thing in the hot tub? Do you think you’re the only one that spent hours on her hair and make-up? You are so selfish!”
Izzy turned and stormed off to the bar. She needed a drink!
“I’m sorry,” Tanya apologized when she caught up to her best friend. “I thought you looked like you could use some fun. In my defense, I asked you if you wanted to join us but you obviously didn’t hear me. I’m sorry.”
Embarrassed beyond words for the dunking and her over-reaction, Izzy fired back. “Well, maybe you should just go home now! You’ve ruined the party.”
Face red and hair dripping, Izzy went in search of a towel. When she noticed all the fresh towels she had Evelyn put out for their guests were gone, she went in search of Evelyn.
Outside the hall bathroom, Izzy ran into Evelyn. “I need a towel pronto.”
Evelyn dropped her load of wet towels and said, “I believe there are a few left in the closet in this bathroom, to the right of the tub.”
Before Evelyn had finished talking, Izzy spun around and entered the bathroom coming to a stop in front of the tub. The heat and humidity from her face caused her sunglasses to fog. Which closet was it again? Izzy opened the one on the right. Bingo!
Toweling herself off, Izzy couldn’t help but wonder why a hall bathroom needed two closets anyway? One for towels and the other for toilet paper? But the one on the right had both.
Izzy dropped the wet towel on the floor. So if the right closet had towels and toilet paper and toiletries, what was in the left closet? More towels? That seemed a bit excessive. The sounds of her guests leaving barely registered to Izzy as she opened the left closet. It was empty. Completely empty. Not even a shelf. Just an empty room.
Curious, Izzy stepped into the closet. There had to be something in here. With a wall on the right, Izzy turned to the left. Stairs.
“OK,” Izzy shook her head, “I really shouldn’t have had that last drink it’s making me see things.”
Izzy rubbed her eyes, but the stairs where still there. “Wow, that’s one crazy strong drink,” she said to herself. And then, realizing she was talking to herself while standing in a closet, Izzy went upstairs to bed. The guests could see themselves out.
