Writing Best Sellers
« on: October 25, 2012, 12:30:35 PM »
My sim want to write a best seller from a children book.
His traits are: Bookworm, Artistic, Perfectionist, Childish and Family Oriented
He has, as being a fairy, the Aura of Creativity on while all his moods are in the far green and he is working in a nice environment.
Still... he write hits more often than Best Sellers. I want all his books to be a Best Sellers and he has written 2 of these before so far.

Is there anything I can do to increase the outcome to be a Best Seller?

For children's books, you need to be good in art. Also, I found the number of books read, increases the chance of a best seller.

As MoMoll said, reading more books helps.  But I'm pretty sure I've read somewhere that it only helps up to 50 books read - reading more than 50 books may not help much.  Also, remember that a Childish Sim can read the toddler books at the library.  I don't think they increase skill for an adult, but they're really fast to read.  If your writer also reads his own books, he'll make it up to 50 books read in no time.

He has read 199 books in total. Skill books, recipe books, instrumental related boos, foreign country books, home written books, entertainment books, everything he could get his hands on actually.
But reading children books? ... That's a new one for me. I'm going to try that out. Thanks girls. :)

It can raise a childish sim's skills, but only if he know nothing about the skill. If he have one skill point it does nothing, but if he have none in say painting, he start at level 3 and get the pop up message about reading books when he was little.

Check you're challenges.  There is one there which increases the chance of writing best sellers.  Sorry, I don't remember what it is called, or the reqirements.  I think it is something to do with the number of books written.

I'm assuming that your Sim is Level 10 in Writing? If they are, there is a 10% chance any book is a Best Seller. When a Sim "receives an advice" from the "Journalism Boss", 5% is added on to the chance of writing a Best Seller. There is also an opportunity that adds 10% to the chance of a Best Seller (I don't know the exact name, sorry). Every book you write in a genre will add 1.5% to the multiplier, to a maximum of 60%. Also, a <Genre> Novelist will have 20% added to the chance. If you want to guarantee a best seller, I recommend that you do all the above, except for the thing about the Journalism Boss. All in all, if you do it all, there's a 105% chance.

20 books. You need to have written 20 books already and the rest will have a higher change to become best seller.
My perfections trait however tells me that these 20 books also must be best sellers. :)
I want a full list of best sellers in my writers journal.

Level 10 is reached indeed. And he has the LTR that improves the quality of his work which I have forgotten to mention.
So, let me get this straight: I need to work myself through the first 20 books, praying and reloading without saving that they all will become best sellers? In the meantime I need to write 5 books for the first genre so that my sims becomes specialised in it and the sixth book will become a best seller with a 105% change of succeeding?
That means I will write 5 Childrens' books, 6 Fiction books, 7 Horror books all down the list just to make sure the next one has a 105% success rate?

Hmm, see you guys in a year or so. :(

No, what I mean is that if you want a 105% chance, you have to do the following:

  • Be Level 10
  • "Receive Advice" from "Journalism Boss"
  • Complete the opportunity (still no idea what it's called)
  • Write more books in that genre (at least 40 total)
  • Write 5 books in the genre (then you become a specialized novelist)

You can, of course, complete any or all of these, each of them raise the chance of writing a best seller. So, for instance, completing items 1, 4 and 5 will mean that you have a higher chance of writing a best seller than if you had just completed item 1.

Does that make more sense? :)

So far my sim's Best Sellers were her 2 Romance and 2 Biography books out of 7 books written. Not sure if some traits and LTR played into that.
Her traits: flirty, virtuoso, perfectionist, artistic, charismatic.
LTR: attractive, observant, master of seduction, extra creative, muti-tasker.
She has read 35 books prior to writing.

I know what you mean. And thanks for making this a list as that makes things far more easy. But I want towrite four books of each genre and they all need to be a Best Seller because that is how I want them to be. No good books, no hits, just Best Sellers. And than the last book genre will be specialised.
Now, if you tell me my sims need to go into the journalism career track than I will do that. Though he is a writer at this point.

On the law of averages, it would take around 40 books for every 4 best sellers with level 10 writing. If you get the opportunity to increase your chances and the 20 book challenge, it should take around five books for every two best sellers. The chances are that at least until then, you have a lot of saving and reloading to do.

It looks like Bookworms and Perfectionists also have an increased chance of writing hits and best sellers. The chance seems to be 20% extra for Bookworms and 15% for Perfectionists. Reading books only improves a sim's writing speed, not their chance of writing bestsellers as far as I can see, and that's truncated at 50 books. I can't find the name of the opportunity that increases the probability, but I'm working on it.

Edit: The opportunity that increases the chances of bestsellers is called Correcting Past Mistakes.

Okey, I got thus to level 10, have the Correcting Past Mistakes opportunity and the Prolific Writer challenge completed so his change of writing Best Sellers is quite high, as I am already noticing. :)

22 books completed, 22 best sellers. Leto is pleaced. :)
