I have been neglecting my other stories to focus on this one, and it's preying on my mind.  So I hope you won't mind too much if I don't post an update here today.  I will, however, be posting an update in the GO Treatment Centre thread, here, so perhaps I can interest you in checking out that thread today?  You may possibly find something of interest there. 

Advertising one story in the pages of another?  Is there any depth to which I will not descend?  Apparently not.  Apologies for interrupting your reading with this bit of shameless self-promotion.

Diary Entry

On the flight home I was too preoccupied to pay any attention to the in-flight movie. 

I thought of my daughter, sweet Ashynna, living so far away.  She might as well have been living on the moon as far as I was concerned.  My ex-wife had taken out a restraining order against me to make sure I could never get near Ashynna.  Mr Payne had told me, "It would be very foolhardy for you to try to see her.  The minute you set foot in town, you'd be arrested and swiftly deported.  And you certainly would be no use to Ashynna or anyone else stuck in the SimBin.  But don't worry - I have people keeping an eye on her.  I promise, no harm will come to her."  And with that, I had to be content for the time being.  I still had hopes of someday being reunited with my darling daughter, and my new Family Oriented trait had only intensified my feelings for her.

But I had to trust that Mr Payne and his people would take care of her for the time being.  After all, Holly had grown up with Vita for a mother and still turned out very well.  Meantime, I was full of anticipation for what awaited me at home.  I arrived just as the sun was coming up.



It was very early in the morning still, so I spent a bit of time working on a painting before setting out.  Mary was putting the finishing touches on her "seasons" picture.  We worked side-by-side, in a companionable silence.  Then I decided it was late enough for me to go.



I told Mary that I was on my way to propose to Holly, if she would have me.



Mary seemed subdued, preoccupied or something - I was never much good at figuring out women's feelings.  She looked down, seeming to avoid my gaze, and said, "Well, good luck, then.  I hope you'll be very happy.  Good luck, and good-bye."



Holly had told me she would be in Central Park this morning.  But before I met her, there was something I needed to do.  A trusted advisor had commented,

Honestly, I think that Nameless could really clean himself up as well.

It made sense.  Much as I enjoyed my comfortable clothes, I wanted to show Holly that I cleaned up good.  So before going to Central Park, I stopped off at the Consignment Shop to seek wardrobe advice from my old friend Cornelia.

Cornelia was only too glad to help, and her taste was impeccable as always.  "This should do it!" she exclaimed with satisfaction, "Elegant but not too dressy.  Yes."





I couldn't remember if I'd ever owned a tie before and found it hard to resist the urge to loosen the thing or even remove it.  But Cornelia insisted it made me look very handsome, and I trusted her judgement.  Full of hope and excitement, I set out for Central Park.  On the way to the park, it occurred to me to wonder how Vita would react at hearing that I was to be her son-in-law.  I chuckled as I imagined the look on her face.  But my humour abruptly evaporated as it dawned on me that I would have Vita as my mother-in-law.  A brief chill went down my spine at that thought.  But then I reminded myself, we wouldn't be living with Vita, so I probably wouldn't have to see her very often.  I would leave it to Holly to deal with her mother - she was good at it.  Nothing could dampen my spirits as I went a-courtin'.

When I arrived at the park I saw Holly, and Goodwin with her.  Excellent!  Goodwin could be the first to congratulate us.  With a spring in my step, I strode toward them.  Then I got close enough to see what they were doing, and my step faltered.



Holly and Goodwin?  Could this really be happening?  For a moment I allowed myself to hope that it wasn't true, that the feelings were all on Goodwin's side.  Holly would catch sight of me and come running over.  But then Goodwin got down on one knee.



The radiant expression on Holly's face as she said yes and admired her new ring forced me to accept the truth.  It was Goodwin she loved, not me. 



And what they did next removed any possible doubt.



Holly and Goodwin had eyes only for each other.  They hadn't even noticed me.  I left them to their happiness and walked away to find a place to be alone and nurse my broken heart.



Diary Entry Ends

*The chapter title is from the song "Froggy went a-courtin' and he did ride," which kept going through my head as I was working on this chapter.  I thought of having Nameless ride in on a horse and even borrowed a horse for the occasion, but watching him struggle to get on the horse, I figured having Holly choose Goodwin over him was enough punishment for poor Nameless to endure in one episode, so we scrapped the idea of the horse.

Awww, poor Nameless! Rejection on his poor barely-healing soul. Of course, this spells good news for Mary, since we are all better at knowing what she was thinking than Nameless, right?

Maybe Mary will be able to cause some sabotage or something like that?

The big question is would Mary what to take Fred knowing she was his second choice? Could any woman (human or sim) deal with that on her mind for the next 50 years?

Maybe it is Mary that Nameless truly loves and he just doesn't realize it yet.
