Lots for growing veg?
« on: October 06, 2012, 07:55:44 PM »
I want to set up a large veg and grapes patch.  to recreate a lovely Nectary I had which I've lost.  But I don't really have enough room on my current residential lot.  Is there a way of buying and converting an existing lot or creating s new one from scratch which I could use for this purpose - as well as,  not instead of,  my current residential lot?.

Thanks for any tips

Danny

I have just such a classic French nectary I could convert to a community lot for you. Or even keep it residential. Pc's down but once it's sorted I'll post it.

Thanks,  that would be great.  Just to clarify, would this mean that I would run it as a second home in France (if it stayed residential).  If its converted to a community lot,  would that mean I'd be able to grow my own produce / make my own nectar on it?  And would it be transferable to Moonlight Falls (or elsewhere among the non-holiday destinations.   Looking forward to seeing it,  and thanks again for the offer

If it became commercial, you wouldn't be able to plant new plants, but the existing ones would neither die, nor wilt, nor improve in quality.

I don't know if this is of any help to you, but I wanted to create a community garden where I could go and get fruit and veggies and not have to take care of them, and a nice place to meet other sims, relax by a pond.

In RV I created a couple who had all of the necessary gardening traits.  I took a residential lot and built a one room, effeciency type house.  Put all of the nice things in it so they would be happy.
Used buydebug to get all of the plants I wanted and planted two of each type I wanted in rows.  I put a fence around it, put in my sprinklers and did NOT put in a gate.  I put in a gate only when they needed to work in the garden.

I wasn't building for a pefect veggie and fruit garden, but a nice community garden to meet others, chill out.   So, I was happy to have plants reach great level, some did go to outstanding, excellent levels.
When it was finished, I got rid of the extra plants, two of some and just one of others and placed them about the garden, fixed it up how I wanted (pond, swings, bar and such), turned house into restrooms, put up a fence and locked the gate to pets (the horses and deer will eat your plants if they can get in).
Moved my couple to a nice home, they deserved it after all the work, and turned it into a community lot.

I did find this out, I left some of the plants in a growing state and they finished growing.  I wasn't sure if they had to be at maturity before it became a community garden, they didn't.

Once it was a community garden, I lost control over it.  I could go and harvest, could go into Edit Town to do some changes, but not much (added in some insects).  I don't think I was able to do anything with the garden, I coud move around tables, but didn't try with any plants.

Unless squidlet wants a house on the lot, that sounds like a good proposition for her. Let's see what she thinks

From what I understood you want a community garden that serves as a nectary in France?

If that is a case, you can edit lots in WA worlds when you enter Edit Town, type in "testingcheatsenabled true" then "EnableLotLocking true" .Then when you select the lot from Edit town, you will be able to click on padlock and unlock it for editing (to enter building mode or to changing the type of lot). That way you can change the lot from residential to commertial as many times as you want, as well as to change the type of commertial lot (for example from park to nectary). You can also demolish existing lots and place custom built ones, and add new lots empty lots with World Editor while in Edit Town.

If you want your current house to be expanded and to serve as a nectary, you can save that lot in bin (Edit town, select your house and save it to bin, then place that lot on bigger one - whatever size you want or have available. That way your building would be centered in bigger lot but will be there with all objects you have, and you can rebuild around anyway you want. You can always place existing lots on bigger empty lots, but never on smaller.

If you place that lot in France and make it a vacant residential lot, you should be able to buy it and use as a second lot in France. You will have to place that lot from bin in each new game you start if you want to have it available with some other household, and you can also place it in Moonlight Falls or any other world you want and use it as many time as you want.

You can harvest any plant reachable in the world, regardles if it is on community or residential lot (just have to be able to have your Sim reach it), meaning that yes, harvestables you get from harvesting those plants can be used for nectar making, cooking, mixology, bait for fishing, planting them again, for opportunities. Only thing is that it will not count into skill challenge of Nectar Making (where you have to use 300 homegrown grapes) if it is not your home lot.

In Swap Shop there are several perfect community gardens that you can download and place in any and all worlds you want, and use as much as you want :)

Belated thanks for all helpful replies - have been busy and simless for a while.  I'll try the 'edit lots' route and ry to create a bigger lot on the spot I want for the garden / nectary
