The Calhouns of Riverview
« on: October 05, 2012, 09:15:49 AM »

Greetings Friends!  I'd like to introduce the beginnings of a hopfully fruitful tale of life and love in the town of Riverview.  Dean Calhoun was raised on a small family farm that was run by the local parish priest for children who were either orphaned or needing foster care.  Dean was a foundling, left on the front stoop in a basket and his siblings used to tease him and say he should have been called Harry instead.

Dean grew up interested in music, he was an outgoing child and as he got older was always willing to help out old Father Calhoun with the younger babies.  But he started to notice something as he got older.  There was a dark, discolored birthmark under his collarbone, and as he grew, it became more and more defined.  Worried, he showed it to the Father who looked very grave and brought the young teenager into his study to show him an old book.  An old book and a matching mark on the Father's own shoulder.

"I'd hoped to break the cycle myself,"  the old priest said with a sigh.  "By choosing not to marry and have children of my own, but it seems that this legacy is not so willing to be quiet.  It's a burden and a blessing Dean, you'll have a long... very long life.  Filled with days of joy and days of sorrow.  So let me offer you some advice.  Fill your life up.  Become involved in your community, push your skills as far as they will go, and don't be afraid to have friends."  He passed over the book to Dean and gave the young man a hug.  "In these pages are the collected wisdom of others like us.  Read it and you'll have an idea of what you'll need to do."

Dean was astonished, and at first a little afraid.  But as he approached adulthood and read through the memoirs of previous immortals he began to understand the tasks that waited for him and his descendants.   As the day apprached that he was ready to leave home, Father Calhoun had one last gift for him.

"It doesn't seem like much, it's just an empty plot of land, but Riverview is a lovely town and no other immortal families live in residence there.  It'll be a good place."

Dean gave the old priest a tearful hug, picked up his small duffle of clothes, his guitar and his small tablet computer and a few hundred in cash.

"I'm ready."

Meet Dean Calhoun!

Dean's Immortal Mark (with bonus swimssuit shot!)

[[The 'tattoo' is actually a glove accessory I got when downloading either Dean Winchester or Castiel from the EA Sims exchange site.  I'm not sure which.  I'm a fan of the show Supernatural and thought that the anti-possession tattoo would make for a great way to indicate an immortal for this challenge.]]

Upon arriving in Riverview, Dean spent his first day wandering around.  One of the local business offices was hiring and Dean's charming personality quickly landed him an entry level position which seemed to be mostly fetching coffee.  But it was a job!  Leaving the  business office he wandered through the downtown before seeing a lovely young woman trip and nearlly fall over outside of the library.  He rushed over and helped her pick up her dropped books.

"Are you alright?"

She gave him a startled blink behind her thick glasses and stammered a little.  "Yes, yes thank you.  I was just.. well, I thought I heard a noise in the alley and well,"

"Forgot to watch wheere you were going?"  Dean said with a grin.  Her nose wrinkled a bit and she pushed her glasses more securely on her face.

"Yes, well, you can never be *sure*.  There could be *anything*.  Some towns I hear have *vampires*."

"Well, then maybe I should walk with you.   I'm Dean.  Dean Calhoun."

The young woman shifted her load of books and smiled back at him, "I'm Constance Shelley, and I was... I was going home.  It's right over here."  She turned to point at the little house and nearly dropped her books again.  Dean lunged to rescue them.

"Lead the way, Constance."

Dean rapidly grew fond of Constance, she was a little forgetful and clumsy, but she had a deep love of books and the moment she saw the old tome that was Dean's legacy from the  Father, she was fascinated at the concept of immortals.  "I love writing, and to think that you're starting a whole new chapter here in Riverview!  It's so exciting!"

"Well, I don't have much yet, Constance.  I don't even have a house yet."

Her eyes sparkled behind her glasses and she gave him a little poke.  "That can be fixed, mister.  Don't think you're taking this story and going anywhere without me!"

Between the money he'd had left over and the sale of Constance's house and car, ("We can take taxis Dean, don't worry so!  Worrying is *my* job!") the couple had enough to put down the beginnings of a home.

It was time for them to begin.

[[For information, the Expansions I have are World Adventures, Ambitions and Pets.  So Constance's fear of vampires is just part of her neurotic personality.  I hope to update every day or two with new reports.  I'm playing ahead so I can have an idea of where this story is going and fiddle with screenshots.  I hope you enjoy!]]

Dean and Constance threw themselves into the frantically busy early days of founding a generations long dynasty.  For Dean this meant making friends at work and impressing his bosses, he quickly picked up the nickname of 'Office Hero' for his ability to smooth over situations and always have the right coffee orders.  After a busy and sometimes stressful day, he'd take his guitar to the park in the middle of town and play.

Constance lookeed over the advice covered in Father Calhoun's tome and decided that she would have to quit her job as a reporter.  She just wouldn't have the time if she wanted to help Dean make this work.  She downloaded gigs worth of podcasts on fishing, cooking, photography and gardening to listen to while she scoured the consignment shops for useful items.

Once she'd grasped the basics of gardening, she asked Dean to keep his eye out for any seeds he found during his performances in the park.  He came back with a lot of carrots and apples, but one or two seeds looked to hold some great promise and Constance looked for more information on them.

One of the hardest skills to master she discovered was ice sculpting.  There was something cathartic about wielding a chainsaw  but for a legacy that was supposed to stand for generations, she was suddenly keenly feeling the onrush of Time.

During one dinner conversation, after Dean had finished talking about the last bits of paperwork to buy out the diner near his offce, she covered one of his hands with her own.  "I think it's time we expanded our household, dear."

His face lit up.  He'd been missing having children and babies around, having grown up as part of Father Calhoun's big, vibrant household.  "You think we're ready to have kids?"

"Well... I was thinking more along the lines of a cat, dear."

"A cat?"  Well... he liked cats well enough, but he was only a few days away from his next birthday and he was hoping that soon they'd be ready for kids.

"I looked at the shelter, and there's a lovely fellow that needs a home.  He's very smart and independant.  Since you dug out the pond in the back, it'd be a perfect spot for a cat to fish in.  I just don't have time to fish right now."

"But... babies?"  Dean put on his most hopeful expression.

"Well... if you're very very good on your birthday."  Constance held up the paper and pointed out the pet section.  "His name is Henry, and we need him."

Henry spent his first day sniffing around, receiving brushings and pettings and once he felt confident in his new home, leapt right into his appointed role of Hunter and Fisher Supreme.  No frog would ever escape his grasp!

Dean's birthday was arriving and Constance let out a huge sigh of relief.  The past few weeks had been terribly busy, but she'd unlocked all the techniques needed to start collecting Dean's Legacy.

"I could pose in my swim suit!"

"Not now, just try not to move dear."

"The world deserves to see me in my swim trunks."

"How about for your next birthday... hold that pose!"

The work had been hard, the paint barely dry on the portrait, but Constance had done it!  The day of Dean's birthday dawned bright and clear and Dean was on the phone, making sure that people could come.  the tables were dragged outside, music played and the cake came from the bakery, perfectly done.

The party was a smashing success and Dean was still smiling about it even days later.  Constance felt that with her skills matured enough to the point where she could concentrate only on the garden, and Henry a diligent fishercat, and her own birthday coming up it was time.

"Babies?"

"Well I hope only one dear.  You didn't take those fertility drugs, did you?"

"Ooh, look, that's not a bad idea, Constance..."

"If I have more than one, there will be *words* Dean Calhoun!"

"It's alright!  It's all fine!  I'll just get the limo!"

"Limo?"

"I did mention that big promotion at work right?  Turns out it comes with a limo.  To the hospital Jeeves!"

The Calhoun Legacy would like to Introduce Riley!

Henry is not impressed and would like it to be known that Riley may not share his food bowl.

So the Calhoun dynasty has entered into it's second generation.

Dean is close to supermaxxing the Guitar skill with only 2 more opportunites needed, and he's one step away from being at the top of the business career.  He has his eye set on a small fishing park for his next purchase and has all his exculsive LTR bought and his LTW is complete.  He just needs to make sure to keep some friends and prepare for Riley's life!

Things are going great!

Thank you! He came right from the adoption agency, name and all.   he's become quite the diligent fisherkitty.  Not too friendly and prone to fleas, but sometimes he comes back withh 200 kg alligators!

The arrival of a new baby is always a hectic time of life.  Constance was feeling a bit overwhelmed, even all the baby books she'd read beforehand didn't seem to prepare her for Riley's highly erratic sleep schedule.  Dean, however, was back on familiar ground.

"The real trick to babies is getting sleep when they do.  We'll swap off catching naps while Riley is awake and get as much sleep as we can when he's down for the count."

"But what about your job?  They didn't exactly give you paternity leave, Dean!"

He grinned back at her, "You know what's nice about being a CEO?  Sometimes I can take a few days off when I want to.

With a lot of juggling of sleep and a few well spent days off, Dean and Constance survived Riley's infancy, though afterwards, Constance spent a well earned day at the spa and Dean took a trip to the park to play on his guitar.  He found a few more interesting seeds for Constance's garden and as he finished up a round of tip playing, realized that he'd reached the peak of his abilities on the guitar.  It was as if a weight had been lifted from him, that he'd excelled in this one singular area.  It made him eager to try out new skills, and he knew Constance would love a hand in the kitchen for once!

Of course, there was all the things he needed to teach Riley now too.  Important things that even a Power Broker at the top of the business career couldn't put aside, even for a confrence call!

Riley was incredibly quick to pick up on skills and he quickly found a favorite toy in the peg box.  Nothing pleased him more than getting all the shapes in the right spot!

He also tried to make friends with Henry, who was still not very impressed with the latest addition to the household who only seemed to make a lot of messes.

After watching Constance carve out a beautiful ice sculpture of Riley, Dean decided that it was time that he did more than make the meals.  Besides that last attempt at meatloaf had been a literal *brick* of a meal, maybe he could make something useful out of it?

Constance took the time to read to Riley, and the hours spent with her son laughing over books began to stir something deep within her.  She'd had dreams of being a writer once, dreams she'd put on hold to be a part of this life.  Was it too late to recapture that goal?

Henry was unconcerned with those deep thoughts.  He was a kitty on the move for his next fish!  Even getting older didn't seem to slow his prowling down in the slightest.

"Okay Riley, can you say Wendigo?"

"Endigah?"

"Wendigo.  You set them on fire."

"Fire!"

"Good!"

It seemed like they had such a short time with Riley's forming years.  But Time was moving forward and so was the Legacy.  Dean and Constance had given Riley the foundation he needed to carry forward through the rest of his life.

Dean himself took stock and realized that he had achieved almost everything Father Calhoun had told him about.  He had a skill that was uniquely his own, he'd worked his way to the top of his field and invested in the community.  All these things would help to anchor him in his long life.

"So, Constance... about that me in a swimsuit for my next sculpture?"

Dean and Constance were relieved when Riley finally became old enough for school.  Keeping up with a smart and active toddler had been stressful, even though Riley had been very good natured through it all.

"Mom, can I have the brown coat?"

"What's wrong with the green one?  It'll look so nice on you."

"I like brown now.  And French toast."

"I thought you liked peanut butter?"

"French toast."

Riley it seemed was determined to have an all new set of favorites.  Fortunately, Constance was more than capable of serving up a batch of toast right before his first day of school.  She just hoped he didn't develop a new set of tastes by the time he got home.

Constance packed Riley a lunch and put him on the bus, then turned and walked into the house.  Aside from Henry, taking a nap on his tower, the place was empty.  Dean would be out checking on their properties, Riley was gone all day and the garden had already been tended.  The day was all hers.

And she knew exactly what she wanted to do.

"Once upon a time, there was a little orange cat named Henry..."

The days went by and each morning after sending Riley off to school, Constance sat and wrote.  They were the Adventures of Henry, the Fishing Cat, and they quickly became hits and then bestsellers.  Book by book, the children's series grew and the money she made grew with them.  Suddenly her old dream of being a professional writer wasn't a dream anymore.  Henry Catches a Frog, Henry Finds a Turtle...

"Mom?"

"Hm?"

"Mom!"

"Yes dear, I'm listening."

"Can I play on the computer?"

"Is your homework done?"

"Yes.  may I please play?"

"Alright.  But only for a few hours a night.  You need to sleep."

"Thanks!"

"You... you wanted to play chess?"

"Yeah!  It's neat!"

The days went by and Constance realized suddenly that she needed to still make a sculpture of Riley and his birthday was on Sunday.  She decided to make the ice statue on Saturday.

"Can I wear my swim suit like Daddy?"

"No, Riley.  How about your nice suit?"

"What about my PJs?  I like my PJs, they have brown on them!"

"I think we'll have you wear your suit dear."

The afternoon was growing long and Dean was home and playing his guitar for them, with Henry and a stray dog playing on the porch while Constance put on the finishing touches to the statue when a dire chill settled over the house.

"Oh no."  Constance turned as a thin black figure coalesed into view.  Her heart plummeted as it approached Henry and the dog.  Henry wasn't a young cat... but she'd thought he wasn't that old yet.

Dean's jaw grimaced and for a moment both he and Riley touched the marks on their chests, the marks that were supposed to make Death pass them over.

The reaper walked swiftly, inexorably... and it walked past Henry to the dog.  The cat yowled in distress but the dog's gaze was fixed on the dark form.  Tears sprang to Constance's eyes as the reaper was... the reaper was *kind*.  It soothed the dog's fears and sent it on, the dog barking happily as it leaped into the beyond.

It's job done, the reaper turned and looked at Dean.  Dean jerked his head to the kitchen and Constance put her hand on Riley's shoulder to keep him with her.  Whatever Dean had to say, she wasn't ready to hear, and she didn't think Riley needed to hear it yet either.

"Can we put the grave out by Henry's Pond?  He was Henry's friend."

"Yes dear, I think Henry would like that very much."

Constance was worried that the dog's death would stay with Riley, but his birthday dawned bright and clear and Riley was looking forward to growing up.  The party was a great hit, and the events of last night were already faded away from her son's mind.

"Riley, Riley go put some clothes on now!  You and your father, I swear!"

"But Dad had a swimsuit shot!"

"Clothes!  Now!"

Re: The Calhouns of Riverview - The First Immortal!

Now in his teenaged years, Riley's love of chess had become downright competitive.  Dean and Constance eventually agreed that he could spend time competing on the chess circuit so long as he kept his grades up and didn't neglect the friends he'd made in school.  At fist the teen grumbled at the compromise, he really loved chess, but his parents knew he'd see the benefits of of having many interests down the line.

Dean however was becoming slightly worried.   Several of  his best friends has passed on from old age and he had a whole new crop of fresh faced employees to get to know.  So he decided to go down to the local theater to busk for a while, and the tips would help to replinsh the family funds, which had gotten a little low buying Riley's first investment, the local bookstore.  His mood always improved while getting lost in the chords of music.  Though the sudden flashes of light surrounding hime *wasn't* the theater neon!

Dean scratched as his graying beard and let out a thoughful *huh*.  "Well, at least I'll have something to tell the family when I get back home!"

He headed back to the house, joints suddenly a little stiffer.  Henry was in the front yard, exorcising the dog out of the lamp on the front lawn.  It seemed all was normal here.

"At least he's not in the stove again?"

"I will move that dog to the fishing grounds if he tears up another chair Dean!"

"But you like the dog, dear.  He's even in your books!"

"My readers never have to know."  She got up from her writing desk and turned to greet Dean.  "Oh, oh *my*.  Well, you have aged well my dear."

He grinned and swooped her in for a kiss.

"Oh, ew.  Parents kissing!  get a room!"

"We are in a room, Riley."   *smooch*

Dean put in a little more effort at work to get to know his new employees and picked up a few tabcats on being more charismatic and he found that for all the friends he'd lost, meeting new ones wasn't proving to be that hard.  Constance continued to work on her novels and it was only a few days before she felt the pull of old age herself.

*hmph!*  "Gray just does not suit me!  A girl needs her pink!"

And then one morning, after years of work in the garden, Constance saw a glimmering golden fruit.  The one that she'd read about years ago in Father Calhouns old book.  The Lifefruit.  All of their work was finally paying off.

"So dear, how does it feel?"

Dean chuckled wryly.  "Well, I'm not young again, if that's what you mean.  You'll just have to put up with a lovable old fart of a husband."

"Sexy, lovable old fart."

"Mom!  Mental trauma here!"

"Oh hush, it's not like we were skinny dipping in the town pool."

"I think we should scandalize him some more.  Be good for the boy."

"I do not know you, either of you!"

"Honestly, Riley, what did you think we were going to do?"

"You know buying a hot tub sounds like a good idea."

And success!  My First Immortal completed his requirements.

Thanks!  It was a big relief to get one successfully done.  And the ghosts are neat, but after a bit, they start overwhelming you.  Fido up there caused almost 3k worth of damage chewing on furniure, and there's no way to stop it out of a forced resetsim command.  His grave in game is now on one of my fishing properties on the far end of town.  He can chew on trees.

Riley found school to be incredibly easy, he did extra oustide reading and helped to tutor his classmates on the assigned homework.  Dean and Constance were a little worried that he didn't have many firends, but the few he did make, he kept in close contact with.  Dean hoped it would be enough down the road.

Chess was still Riley's passion, he had a goal to become a Master at the game and that meant putting in hours of practice and calling up other enthusiasts to play against.

Even getting older and graduating from High School didn't slow down Riley's wishes at all.

"I think Riley needs to broaden his horizons a bit, Dean.  It's all well and good that he's gotten a job at the Bistro, cooking is a good creative outlet for him, but he seems content to not really explore much.  Well, aside from the night sky, but he's not meeting many girls through the telescope and the ones he does know he keeps beating at chess."

Dean laughed and stretched out in the hot, soothing water.  "Well, You could finish that statue of him and set it out in the park, to see if it attracts any attention."  He grinned slyly, "Even if it wasn't one of him in his swimsuit."

"Really, Mom, Dad, I'm *fine*.   I don't need you to set me up on dates!  I've got that money from my investments, I was planning on taking a trip.  So quit your plotting and get out of that thing before your swimsuits become glued to you."

"We're not wearing swimsuits."

"I am going to Egypt until the sun burns that image out of my brain."

[[no mods, Constance had a strapless suit on and once she was in the water, it really looked like they were skinny dipping!  Riley is eternally wierded out by his parents.  Hopefully this trip will help him out!]]

*laughs*  Yes, Riley does have his life goals in mind.  And he's well on the way towards his goals.  He's just not as easy going as his parents, though he does have his moments now and then!

Egypt.  Land of mystery, of enchantment.... of really really big piles of rocks.

At the camp where Riley was staying, there was a board with lists of adventures for tourists, ranging from simple sightseeing jaunts to mysterious jobs.  After looking over one or two, he headed to the local bazaar to get a few trinkets to take back home.  The shopkeeper was a beautiful woman and the two of them hit it off quickly.

"It's getting towards dinner, would you like to eat with me?"  Riley asked after she packed away his purchases.

"Oh, no, I'm sorry, but I have a husband."

Riley blushed a little, and stammered an apology, he probably should have asked her that a little earlier.  But there were several other women wandering about the marketplace.

"I am engaged.  But would you like to buy a recipe?"

"Thank you for asking, but yes, I do have a boyfriend."

Riley sighed and ate alone.  It seemed that all the women of datable age in the town were already paired off.  There was an evening tour offer down the coast line, and he decided to spend the rest of his trip just sightseeing.  There was still plenty of time to find someone special of his own.

On his last day in Egypt, he found a posting on the board to tour one of the local tombs for some lost artifacts.

"Oh, hello, are you here on the search too?"  A woman that he'd seen in the tourist camp tilted her hat back and gave Riley a smile.  "I saw the notice on the board too, and I bet with two of us working, it'd go a lot faster."

"You don't have a boyfriend, or partner already helping you out?"  Riley asked.

"No, no I don't.  I've been travelling the world for a while now," she replied.  "I'm Mu lan Chin."

Riley smiled and held out his hand, "Riley Calhoun.  And I'd love to help you explore this tomb."

"Excellent!"  Mu lan grinned at him.  "This looks like the start of a great partnership!"
