Mu lan stepped back from her most recent painting and frowned thoughtfully.  It  had started as a dancing girl but it had evolved into a more ... firey spirit.  It wasn't the best work she'd ever done, but something about it felt important, and instead of shipping it off to the gallery right away, she hung it on the wall instead.  Perhaps she'd understand it later.

Skye meanwhile had slipped outside and gone down to Lost Willow Park, one of her grrandfather's propereties.  She'd heard people talking that a uniicorn had sometimes been spotted amongst the wild horse herd that roamed the edges of town and she wanted very much to meet it.  Perhaps it would sense that she had the immortal mark?  A few of the wild horses were at the small park and they snorted nervously and kept their distance from the lone girl.  All except for a sleek, black one, drinking at the water and shimmering in the moonlight.  Her breath caught in excitement, this really was the fabled creature!

Then another light burst from behind her, flashing blue and red.

"Young lady, you are out after cerfew!"

Skye whirled and her jaw dropped open to try and *explain*  to the police officer that this was *important* when a sudden cold, horrible sensation flooded through her.  A feeling that her father and Grandpa Dean had warned her that she might one day feel.

"No!  No I have to go home!  I have to go home now!"  She rushed past the stunned police officer, dread building in her throat.

[[Watcher's Note... I really was set up to take screenshots of Skye getting hauled home after cerfew when the camera did it's giant leap back to the house to show... this]]

Dean had been relaxing in the hot tub and wondering if his granddaughter was thinking if she could sneak back into the house far after the town's cerfew hours when he felt the dull ache of his mark beginning to signify a death of someone he knew.  He frowned a little and concetrated, but Riley's sudden anguished shout from his son's bedroom meant he didn't need to sense who this passing on was.

Mu lan felt so many of the aches she'd been living with fade away, and the world grew hazier and more indisinct.   She turned slowly and looked and there, bursting in through the door was her dear Skye, the force of her life bright and vibrant and ... ah.  That was the painting then.  She was glad she had not sold it though she was sorry that she did not have any more time for her family.

She remembered the day Riley asked her to be his wife.

The friends she had made in Riverview.

The art museum that she'd spent so many days enjoying.

Her adventures.

She was content with this life.  And ready to see what came next.

[[We apologize for the brief hiccup in updating... Assassin's Creed 3 came out and I was busy fighting the British, but we should see some more regular updates now!]]

Mu lan's death saddened the household, but no one was more affected than Skye.  She'd known that her mother wasn't young, and had waited a long time to even have children, but... but...

"It's not *fair*!"

The words came bursting out of her.

"It's not *fair* that she died!  We were just on a trip together!  She was *fine*!  Why couldn't she eat that stuff you and grandpa keep in the machine?  Why couldn't *she* have any!  Why wasn't it you instead?"

Riley was taken aback at his daughter's fury for a moment.  They'd never been very close to each other, due to the long hours that he worked and his own grief made him want to shout back at Skye.  But just shouting back wasn't what his daughter needed right now.

"Skye... you're right.  It's not fair.  It's not fair at all.  But there was nothing that we could have done.  The ambrosia, it doesn't work like that.  ti doesn't make us younger... Grandpa Dean isn't young, is he?"

Skye hiccuped a bit and then finally shook her head.  "No."

"No.  We... we get older, to a point.  I've studied the recipe and the ingrediants.  What ambrosia does, is... well, it makes it easier to keep living.  It provides a cushion, a buffer to way that a long life might drag on us.  Keeps the years from pulling us down.  But that's it.  It wouldn't have let your mom, or mine, live any longer."

Skye sagged a bit.  "But I still needed her..."

"I still needed her too, Skye.  Come on.  Let's go get your horses fed before they raid the kitchen."

Later on, as Riley closed up the restraunt for the evening, he pondered some of the choices that he'd made.  Working such late hours meant that really, he'd never gooten to spend a lot of timewith Skye, usually by the time she was coming home from school, he was walking out the door for the dinner shift.  He couldn't take back any of the years they'd already spent, but perhaps... perhaps with the upcoming promotion and a few opportunities... perhaps he'd be able make sure the years stretching out ahead of them weren't so seperate.

[[A short post, but it felt like a good bridging point and I wanted to put down some of how the 'ambrosia' worked in this story.   With such a huge mood boost, Dean's never unhappy anymore, so to say that ambrosia is more of a way to keep life from weighing on an immortal after generations of people grow old around them seemed to fit the story (and why the other family mamers weren't getting any!)]]

[[Player's note:  It's been a while, but the bugs and problems I had with the game are stomped and what I thought might have been a Dynasty  ender was given a pass by the mods and I am duly chastised for it!  But the game is cooperating with me now and here's the next installment of the Calhouns!]]

The final year of Skye's high schooling was a busy one for the Calhouns.   With her interest in being a horsewoman firmly established, Dean set out some of the undevloped property on their land to be turrned into an open riding arena for her to raise and train horses.

And while the outside was being prepared for Skye, inside, Riley was working on the finishing touches of his own path towards ambrosia.  A little more work would see his final promotion at the Bistro and one final opportunity finally reared up for him to complete.

"The boss is going to *love* these crepes!  Though why I still *have* a boss is beyond me."

"Heck if I know son, I'm pushing 100 and still doing meetings."  *grins at his son*  "Though don't you think I don't look a day over 69?"

Skye's birthday finally was on them and the house was filled with all of her friends from school.  the day was bright and sunny and full of celebration.  Dean knew she'd picked a difficult career to try and advance herself in, and her opportunities would be hard to come by, but he hoped she'd be happy, no matter the outcome.

Skye wasted no time in putting her plans into motion.  After studying the rules of the competition scene, she learned that there were no bans against unicorns competing, and indeed they were viewed as some of the best mounts in the region.  She just had to go and earn the friendship of one and hope that they would help her in her quest.

Success finally came and the unicorn Ariel agreed to help.  However, it was still a long road ahead of her and Skye had a lot to learn.

[[Player's note:  It took me a long time to learn that even unicorns need a proper saddle to score big wins!   Up next, Riley's final birthday party and is that love in the air for Skye?]]

Riley's final birthday was finally on the Calhoun household.  All of Riley's friends and coworkers were invited and Dean offered to provide the music to make the occasion lively.  They decided to make it a formal affair and hold it indoors for once, moving a few couches around to provide room for the guests and dancing.

Skye had been so flustered with helping dean plan the party that she'd completely forgotten to eat the whole day and by the time the cake came out she was starving.

Riley didn't make her wait too long, and surrounded by family and friends he made a wish and blew.

"Whoa!  I'm dizzy and seeing sparkles... I think I'm hunrgy too.  Good thing we've got cake!"

While the party went on, Riley slipped breifly aside to see what time had wrought on features.  Dean had stubbornly clung to his brown hair, saving for a  little 'distinguished' gray, but Riley rather liked his new look.  It just needed a bit of a trim and a brush and he was ready to go.

Skye had resigned herself to a fairly laid back party full of much older people, but to her surprise, Lorenzo McIntyre arrived.  He'd started working at the spa after their graduation and Skye realized a little guiltily that she hadn't spent much time with him.

"Well, I suppose that's kind of the part of growing up, right?  You've been training Crimson's latest foal and racing in the evenings.  I saw you were in the advanced races, are  you thinking of moving up to the International level soon?"

Skye and Lorezno spent most of the party just catching up and as the evening progressed, she realized that she was happy around Lorenzo and ... and well.... she didn't want to end up in the same situation as her father, only getting a short amount of time with his wife.  The old resentment she'd felt about her father barely being around in the early stages of life had faded and their relationship was stronger now, but the memory of the hurt remained.   She could do it.  All the work needed to complete the requirements set out in the old tome provided by Father Calhoun *and* a family.

But the question was... did Lorenzo want that too?

Lorenzo's response was everything Skye had hoped for.

The marriage was a short  and simple ceremony at City Hall, and Lorezo moved in that evening.

"Ah.. newlyweds,"  Dean grinned as he worked on Riley's final pieces of artwork.  "Were we ever that young?"

"Dad, I'm still wondering if you ever grew *up*."  Riley snorted as he got ready for his evening shift at the Bistro.  It was the day after his final birthday and he'd recieved the promotion to the top of the career so once Dean was done fixing his likenesses onto canvace and ice, he would be ready for his own ambrosia.

"Of course I grew *up*, I just refuse to grow any older!"

"Don't traumatize them, Dad."

"Bah.  No sense of humor with  you, I swear."

"I do have one.  It's just more mature than yours."

"Do they always yell at each other like that?"

"Only when they're awake.  I think honeymoon?"

"I think we'd have to go to China to stop hearing them."

"Hey... that's not a bad idea!"

.... the next morning....

"China?  Well, I don't see why not.  We could call your mother's relatives,  I think they'd love to meet you and Lorenzo."  Riley said as he walked to the table with the results of a lifetime of work (and one heck of an artistic all nighter from Dean)

"I've always wanted to travel," Lorenzo said from where he was getting his own breakfast (and checking the stove... he thought he'd heard a hissing)

"And I can afford it from my investments, and I think I need a break from the track as well."

Riley sat down with his plate of glowing, shimmering food and gave ita dubious poke.  The recipee was Dean's after all, not his and he wasn't entirely sure he trusted his father's cooking.  he'd have to get his own copy of the recipe, soon.

"Go ahead and give the travel agency a call, and then call your Uncle Ping to let him know you're coming."  He took a bite...

Yes.  Yes, he would have to get the recipe.  Riley was sure he could do better than this!

China!  Skye and Lorenzo set down their luggage and took a long looks at the beautiful jagged hills and winding paths.

"So... hills."

"Yup."

"A *lot* of really steep hills."

"Very steep."

"After a 14 hour flight."

"And immigration!"

"And the 2 hours in the taxi to get here."

"Soo..."

"Are you pondering what I'm pondering?"

Reinvigorated by much needed sleep, Skye and Lorenzo looked over the vacation brochures.

"There's an afternoon opening at the spa, which means we have the morning to meet my relatives."

"And there's an adventure expedition!"

Skye gave Lorenzo a fond look, "You don't like to leave the bed unmade, Lorenzo, and you want to an old building full of dust and bugs and stuff?"

Lorenzo hesitated for a moment wondering if Skye had made a joke and he'd missed it.  It wasn't good at getting jokes.  And alright, maybe he did get worried about things going wrong but that was why you checked the gas or the faucet... and well *adventure*!  This could be much more exciting than just daring the graveyard late at night, right?

"You just want to get out of meeting more in-laws."  Skye grinned.  "How about we meet back here for lunch then, and head over to the spa after?"

Lorenzo agreed and gave her a kiss before heading out with the information on the tomb exploration.  "Right, so the key stone goes in like this..."

Skye's uncle, Ping, was delighted to meet her and showed her around the restaurant that the family owned, "It was supposed to go to Mu Lan, since she was the oldest child, but she had those wandering feet and we thought she'd never settle down."

"And then she married Dad, who cooks!"  Skye laughed.  "So she let him make all the meals instead.  I don't think I ever saw her pick up a pan, but she and my grandfather would play duets while Dad cooked."

Uncle Ping was delighted to hear stories about his older sister's life and they chatted amiably while waiting for Pings daughter, Mei, to arrive.

Adventure!  This was Adventure!  Lorenzo chanted to himself.  He *liked* adventure!  He really really liked it!  He read all the stories!  The movies!  He never expected the sparks to be so... *real*.

"So, tell me about your husband, since he's off being all manly and testing himself against the tourist traps."  Mei asked.

"Tourist traps?"

"Oh yes.  Ancient chinese legends and all.  They come in droves.  So we knocked together a few 'mystic' sites and stock them full of coins that you can spend at our 'special' dealer."

Oh... oh dear."  Skye laughed.  "Well that is clever.  But you were asking about Lorenzo.  His father's a captain in out local police force, and there's an opening in the academy later this year.  Lorenzo's considering applying."

Adventure was *nothing* like the books.  The books *lied*.  Dashing heroes found priceless artifacts in deep wells of mystery... not muck!

Skye got to the bridge almost at the same time as Lorenzo.

"Oh my, you're soaked!  You didn't jump in the river, did you?"

"Nope.  But I'm all adventured out right now."

"Here, let me wring out your shirt and we'll go have lunch and then head up to the spa to relax."

"That sounds just perfect to me."

"Did you want to go visit the martial arts academy?" Skye asked later as they relaxed in the pool.

"Not really.  I mean, the whole kung fu has never been my thing.  I like jogging and all, but I can't see myself breaking boards."

"Hmm.  Well, we have the downstairs basement where we're storing some equipment.  Wine makers and such, I think I'd like to bring back a training dummy at least, and maybe a board breaker."

"You mean for the whole dynasty thing , right?"

Skye was surprised.  She'd never actually brought that whole part of her life up before.  Sure Grandpa Dean was *old*, but he wasn't even the oldest person in Riverview yet.  He still had one best friend still alive.  "How did you know?"

"Well, your mom.  Back before you took that trip to France.  She talked to me about it, and showed me the book, because well, I was already your best friend and she thought I should know if I was going to be.. serious."  His cheeks flushed a little.  "So, this means I don't have to get a matching tattoo, right?  Because needles."

Skye laughed and splashed Lorenzo and they chased each other around the pool until the afternoon.

"So... will you be going on more adventures in the tombs?"

"No... I think that my dream of being a seasoned traveller and going on endless expeditions is.. a lot more trouble than it's worth.  I think I'll settle for having married the richest girl in town.  Do you have one of those big money vaults that I can swim through?"

Skye snickered.  "No... but I'll buy the cemetary and you can tomb explore whenever you want."

He eyed her cautiously.. "Was.. was that a joke?"

"Nope."

"Oh my..."

Skye and Lorenzo returned from China, refreshed and both ready to get to work.   The police academy had opened up for applicants, and full of confidence after his new lifetime achievement being fulfilled, Lorenzo applied and was accepted.

Skye's racing career however had hit a horrid snag.  her six wins at the Advanced levels of racing had vanished, in fact other than her trophies and victory money, there was no record of her having raced at all!  She was sick to her stomach at the thought of having to start all over again.  It was Riley however who twigged onto Skye's illness as possibly something more.

"It's just so... disheartening, Dad.  I mean, I still have the skills, and since Ariel was old, I did release her and find Brandy to help me race, but everytime I think about getting back out there, I get sick again."

"Skye, it's not fair that you lost all that work, but I think there's another issue you might have missed."

"Missed?"

"Don't you normally have dragon patterns on your sleep wear?"

Skye looked at her fater a bit strangely.  Sleepwear?  Her career was in shambles and she couldn't even think of getting on a horse again and he was talking about her *pajamas*?  "Yes?  I always have something from Mom's country.. what does that have to do with anything?"

"You're wearing sheep dear."

She looked down puzzled.  Well... yes, she didn't think she *had* any pajamas with sheep on them.  "I.. are these mine?"

Riley smiled.  "For a little while.  I think you're in maternity wear, Skye."

She was aghast.  How had she missed the signs?  Sickness, an unwillingness to ride... these were all pointers of pregnancy!  She felt almost dizzy with relief and joy, she wasn't falling apart, she was just pregnant!  After hugging her father, she went back into her bedroom to wake up Lorenzo and give him the news.

The days of Skye's pregnancy flew by.  Rather than being anxious and worried about the racing time she was missing, she spent hours simple communing with her horses and caring for them, even going out to the fishing gounds and bringing back a wild horse to ready for training and a future sale.

Skye was so preoccuiped, that the first contraction caught her off guard.

"That... that's not my normal phone ring!  Lorenzo!  Dad?"

"AHHHH!  AIEEEE!  What do we do!  Water!  Water!"

"Dad?  dad, a little help here!"

"Breathe, Skye!  remember to breathe!"

"Towels!  We need water and towels!"

"Argh!  You two are useless?  Where's grandpa Dean?"

"He said something about going to the family inventory."

"Sparkles!  Sparkles incoming... hey... is that my old crib?"

And it's a girl!  Generation 4 has arrived in the Calhoun Dynasty!  Let's give a great big welcome to Gabrielle Calhoun.  Still a long way to go, but the roadmap is well paved out now.

With two onsite grandpas to help out, Gabrielle's nooboo days went easily on Skye and Lorenzo.  Dean and Riley had plenty of time, since they only worked a few days a week.  They always had time for a snuggle...

Walking lessons...

And a spot or two of entertaining with chainsaws... ahem... sculpting!

But Skye remembered some of her old resentment of feeling that her father had been too busy for her when she was younger and she and Lorenzo made sure to spend some quality time with little Gabby.

And busy Skye was.  Between training up foals to sell and racing, she was a constantly busy woman.

"Okay, Brandy.  This is going to be a good night for us, I can feel it.  That victory statue will be ours!"

"Skye.. when you said statue... I was expceting something... smaller."

Skye scratched at her head a bit then grinned at Dean.  "Well, I think I earned it!"

He sighed, "Well... maybe on the back porch until we find a better spot.  It won't fit in the basement at all."

Skye and Lorenzo aged up within a few days of each other, and while Skye was still happy with her look, Lorenzo felt the need to embrace fuzzy caterpillars.

"It's a mustache!"

"It tickles!"

"I think it makes me look older."

Dean and Riley shared amused glances.

"Just wait, you'll look back on these days with longing to be younger."

"Says the man that feels the need to dye his hair?"

"I am still older than you Riley!"

"Not according to the counter, you ate the ambroisa two days after me, so I'm older now."

"Old people?  hey old people!  Sparkles!"

Life in the Calhoun household merrily marches on...

Gabrielle stood in front of the mirror in the bathroom and sighed at her reflection.  Picking out clothes had been easy, a few pairs of pants, a nice dress for the paintings and sculptures, nothing to get too attached too, she wouldn't be wearing them for that long anyways.

It was her hair.  She'd been here for what felt like hours, trying every stlye she could think of.  But they were all whispy and thin.. and well... not *her*.

"I look like a *boy*," she muttered, pushing her glasses up more firmly on her nose.

"No you don't,"  Skye replied, coming into the bathroom to give a look in the mirror.  "It's very short, but you don't look like a boy."

"Yes I do.  Short boy hair and glasses.  It's awful."

"How about something nice and totally girly then?"

"Like what?"  She gave her mother a suspicious look.  "I have a dress."

"How about earrings?  We can get you a nice pair to match your glasses with."

Gabrielle looked into the mirror again and imagined herself with earrings on.   It... well... it wasn't *so* bad, they were pretty, and matched...  "It's still really eally short, mom."

"We'll  see about finding you a better stylist, alright?"

Dean had wandered down into the basement to pick up his old guitar and clear his mind of the day to day work of a constantly groowing household.

"Connie, babe, I don't know how you managed it.  The paintings, the books, the garden, the sculptures..."  he  jammed out one of her favorite tunes,  "And I don't dare even pick up the camera anymore for skill gains, had to hand that off to Lorenzo.  Did I mention how awesome you were about the fish and getting that replicator for us early?"  He finished playing the song and placed the guitar back down among the pieces his wife had made for him.  "I still miss you.  Hope you and Mu lan don't mind the noise, we're going to extend down here... got to get the nectar machines ready, it looks like gabby's going to have the geen thumb of the family."  Dean laughed.  "Can't wait to hand off the garden to someone else!"

He looked around at the slowly growing basement.  "Well, tomorrow's Saturday.  Good day for getting all the new additions in!"

"I can not believe I'm letting you do this."

"It's tradition.  Third time is most deifnately tradition."

"Are we done yet?  Do I have to keep standing here like with the ice?"

"Nope, I've got you."  Dean replied, working busily.

"Yes!  Dad let's go play tag!"

"Don't you want to  change first?"

"Nope!  I'll never wear this again at all!"

One rousing game of tag later...

"Must improve atlethic skill...."

"Tee Hee!  You're it again daddy!"

Skye came home after the evening races to find Lorenzo had already given up on staying awake and was snoring away.

"I think I wore him out Mom."

"I think you did too.  Let me get washed and changed."

"Monster movie night?"

"You got it kiddo.  Girls and jammies only."

"Oh, no... there went Tokyo!"

Monday came around all too quickly, and with it the start of school for Gabby.

"I dunno, Nugget, I just wish school was outside."

"Mow?"

"Being inside all day is boring."

"Murr."

"Gabby!  Don't be late for school!"

"Purrr..."

"Yeah, Nugget, you're right.  With Daddy having the same hours, and a cop, I'm never going to be able to cut class, am I?"

[[Watcher's note... I felt a little bad for Gabby, her having such short short hair, but none of the girl's hair I had worked for her at all.  For her teen years I went and bought some at the Sim Store.  And Dean really does love going down to the museum to play the guitar I left there, even though he has one in his inventory.  I'm pretty sure he's giving the ladies at rest there concerts.]]

Thank you!  *hugs poor Gabby*  I tried on style after style of the small kids section I had and aside from the short curly crop none of them looked right on her.  So I gave her the pretty little studs instead of saving earrings for the teen years.

Things were quiet.  Calm.  Peaceful.  Endless summer days and nights.

Despite Gabby's hatred of having to spend the better part of her days locked in school, her family made consessions. Ttrips to the park for an afternoon out and homework sessions combined would put Gabby in a much better mood for the evening.

But there was a power growing.  A great and fierce new power was emerging from a member of the household, and the Calhouns were oblivious until one day, after another outdoor homework session... it struck.

"Gabby?"  Lorenzo's horrified voice echoed through the house.  "Gabby!  Gabby are you all right?"

She was out cold and snoring on the floor.  Completely unresponsive for eternally long minutes.

Lorenzo was horrified.  How had this happened?  He'd only been talking to her just a brief moment  before, detailing the latest information on the yeti menace of the Bridgeport sewer system!

He fussed over her until finally, gratefully, she woke up.  A bit woozy, but it seemed as if she was recovered.  The next day as Gabrielle was trying to strike up some muffin sales, Lorenzo arrived home and told the incident to Riley.

"Well, we'll keep an eye on her, make sure this wasn't just a sudden lack of food or anything."

"Are you sure?  I mean it could be an attack from the spy sattelites of Simestan!"  Lorenzo rattled off the latest news of secret sattelites he'd gotten from the consipiracy sites he monitored at work.

And then it happened.

Again.

"Oh Daddy..."  Gabby cautiously took her fingers out from her ears when it looked like her father had stopped talking.

"I... wait, that was *me*?"  Lorenzo marvelled.  "I should go back into work and let the captain know.  We may have to register this effect as a weapon!"

Riley recovered a few minutes later and Lorenzo hurried off to the station.  Gabrielle put her muffin stand away for the night and went in with her grandfather.

"So."

"So."

They laughed.

"Daddy's kind of boring, isn't he?"

"He means well."

"Yeah, but spy sattelites?"

"It's just an active imagaination.  He should write them down instead.  maybe he'll find people who want to read those ideas."

"We should tell mom, he listens to her and she doesn't get bored by him ever... I... oh wow!"

"Make a wish Gabby!"

"Better hair!"

The sparkles rushed over her.

"Noooooooooo!"

Thank you for your visit for the other day :)
It's not fair if you comment at my story and I didn't comment yours. I've been reading yours too (secretly)
Just say to be fair :)

I loved Riverview :D

I use spoiler, so people didn't have difficulties (scrolling things) when they want to read next stories.

I enjoyed your style in writing. I'm still learning at it and wish I can have a better way to do storytelling ;)
You're already bookmarked, so I won't miss any updates from you. Good luck for the rest of generations.
I want to see how this story end with the best ending~~
